The structural properties and crystallization behaviour of xNa2O-(100-x)TeO2 (0 <= x <= 33.3, x-% mole fraction) glasses have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Raman spectra of glasses show systematic changes in structural units, from TeO4 trigonal bypiramids (tbps) to TeO3 trigonal pyramids (tps) with increasing Na2O content in glass. These structural changes are result of Te-eqOax-Te disruption and the formation of non-bridging oxygens (NBOs) in glass network. when heated at 623 K for 10 h glasses crystallized to different phases: alpha-TeO2, Na2Te4O9 and a new crystalline phase which is believed to be a polymorph of Na2Te2O5.

Improvements In Steel Melting Efficiency -- Industrial Trials, Kent D. Peaslee, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Edith Martinez

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Industrial trials were completed to improve energy efficiency in steel melting. First, the benefits of increased chemical energy from an oxyfuel burner and a Co-Jet system in a basic 20 ton electric arc furnace (EAF) were studied. Observations and measurements were made during production before and after the installation of the two systems. The additional chemical energy improved energy efficiency and resulted in increased production. In addition, production using a basic EAF practice was compared to the traditional acid EAF practice. Second, an industrial trial using a 750 lb ladle with a combination of a lightweight alumina castable refractory and …

Different industrial melting and ladle practices (deoxidation, slag, refractory types, etc.) used in steel foundries were analyzed and compared using an ASPEX automated inclusion analyzer for study of inclusions. The effects of deoxidation and pouring practices on the size, type and number of inclusions were evaluated for steel foundries equipped with induction and arc melting furnaces, with capacities ranging from 1 to 20 tons. Samples were collected from the furnace, ladle, and castings. Specific rules were developed for classification of inclusions by composition, size distribution and shape. Inclusion statistics, including composition, quantity, shape, and size during cast steel processing from …

Biology has long been recognized as an excellent source of analogies and stimuli for engineering design. Previous work focused on the systematic identification of relevant biological analogies by searching for instances of functional keywords in biological information in natural language format. This past work revealed that engineering keywords couldn't always be used to identify the most relevant biological analogies, as the vocabularies between biology and engineering are sufficiently distinct. Therefore, a method of identifying biologically meaningful keywords that correspond to engineering keywords was developed. Here, we apply and refine this method by generating biologically meaningful keywords for the terms of …

A nonperturbative close-coupling technique is used to calculate differential cross sections for the electron-impact ionization of H2 at an energy of 35.4 eV. Our approach allows cross sections for any orientation of the molecule with respect to the incident electron beam to be analyzed. New features in the resulting cross sections are found compared with the case where the molecular orientation is averaged, and also with cross sections for He at equivalent electron kinematics. When averaged over all possible molecular orientations, good agreement is found with recent experimental results.

We observe high-order harmonic spectra generated from a thin atomic medium, Ar, Kr, and Xe, by intense 800-nm and 1300-nm femtosecond pulses. A clear signature of a single-atom response is observed in the harmonic spectra. Especially in the case of Ar, a Cooper minimum, reflecting the electronic structure of the atom, is observed in the harmonic spectra. We successfully extract the photorecombination cross sections of the atoms in the field-free condition with the help of an accurate recolliding electron wave packet. The present protocol paves the way for exploring ultrafast imaging of molecular dynamics with attosecond resolution.

Highly spin-polarized diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors are expected to be widely used as ideal spin injectors. Here, extensive first-principles density-functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate the feasibility of using Cr- and Mn-doped wurtzite polar AlN/GaN(0001) heterostructures, with the aim to realize the appealing half-metallic character and, hence, efficient electrical spin injection. To overcome the formation of detrimental embedded clusters, we propose digital delta-layer doping perpendicular to the growth direction so as to realize enhanced performance at room temperature. The formation energy, electronic and magnetic properties, and the degree of spin polarization for both neutral and charged valence states for …

Interference Effects Due To Projectile Target Nucleus Scattering In Single Ionization Of H₂ By 75-Kev Proton Impact, Jason S. Alexander, Aaron C. Laforge, Ahmad Hasan, Z. S. Machavariani, M. F. Ciappina, R. D. Rivarola, Don H. Madison, Michael Schulz

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Doubly differential cross sections (DDCSs) for single ionization of molecular hydrogen by 75-keV proton impact have been measured and calculated as a function of the projectile scattering angle and energy loss. Interference structures are observed in the scattering angular dependence of the DDCSs, which disappear, however, at electron speeds near the projectile speed. The comparison to our calculations shows that the projectile-target nucleus interaction plays a central role. Furthermore, our data suggest that for a given scattering angle, ionization favors well-defined molecular orientations.

Spin- And Fine-Structure-Resolved Ionization Of Krypton, S. Bellm, J. Lower, R. P. Mceachran, E. Weigold, Ciarán Ryan-Anderson, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of exchange, correlation, and relativistic effects in the ionization of heavy-target atoms can be sensitively probed by kinematically complete studies involving spin-polarized electrons, in particular when the fine structure of the residual ion is resolved. We present spin asymmetries, triple differential cross sections, and branching ratios for the ionization, by 127.5-eV and 114.3-eV electrons, of ground-state krypton atoms leading to the Kr+ 4s 2S1/2, 4p5 2P1/2, and 4p5 2P3/2 states. In order to untangle contributions from different physical effects, the experimental results are compared to those from distorted-wave Born approximation calculations (non- and semirelativistic) in which bound-state and …

Confessions Of An Angry Insomniac, Gayle Greene

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

The first thing to go is your sense of humour. Then it's the desire to do the things you used to do, and then the desire to do anything at all. Parts of your body ache that you don't even know the names of, and your eyes forget how to focus. Words you once knew aren't there any more, and there's less and less to say. People you once cared about fall by the wayside and you let them go, too.

Introduction To Lgbtq America Today, John C. Hawley

l was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and learned from my classmates in seventh grade that boys who wrote with their left hand or wore green and yellow on Thursdays were homos. Because I did both, I knew I was in deep trouble from the start and might have some pretending to do. Such was the atmosphere for LGBTQ folks in the United States throughout the 1950s. Things loosened just a bit in the 1960s, when hippies were shaking society up. Then, in the 1970s, gay folks seemed to be-a lot more visible--disturbingly so, in the minds of many-and …

Real-Time Automatic Price Prediction For Ebay Online Trading, Ilya Igorevitch Raykhel

Theses and Dissertations

While Machine Learning is one of the most popular research areas in Computer Science, there are still only a few deployed applications intended for use by the general public. We have developed an exemplary application that can be directly applied to eBay trading. Our system predicts how much an item would sell for on eBay based on that item's attributes. We ran our experiments on the eBay laptop category, with prior trades used as training data. The system implements a feature-weighted k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm, using genetic algorithms to determine feature weights. Our results demonstrate an average prediction error of 16%; …

Quality Of Relationship With Supervisor And Work Exhaustion Among Nurses, Unnikammu Moideenkutty, Gary Blau, Ahmed

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: To study the impact of quality of relationships with supervisors, operationalised as leader-member exchange (LMX), on work exhaustion among nurses working for a hospital in Oman. Methods: Data were collected from 229 nurses using a questionnaire. Results: LMX was found to be a significant negative correlate of work exhaustion directly, as well as beyond the controlled- for correlates of gender, organisation experience, occupation experience, education level, job satisfaction, occupation satisfaction and work interfering with family. Conclusion: A perceived higher quality work relationship with one’s supervisor appears to have a significant impact on reducing perceived work exhaustion among nurses.

Lower Cretaceous Calcareous Nannofossils From The Southern Apuseni Mountains, Romania, Ana-Maria Vulc

Studia UBB Geologia

We investigated Lower Cretaceous calcareous nannofossils from Southern Apuseni Mts. The studied section from Bucium Cerbu quarry is characterized by flysch deposits (rhythmical interbedded marls and sandstones), which were assigned to the Căbeşti Formation. The studied nannofossil assemblages yielded a high diversity. The Early Aptian age of the studied deposits was assigned based on both the Tethyan and Boreal calcareous nannofossil zonations. Several reworked Valanginian nannofossils were also observed in the Early Aptian in situ nannofloras. The nannofloras are dominated by tethyan and cosmopolitan species. Besides Boreal species are also present. The presence of boreal taxa (e.g. Kokia borealis, K. …
