An Assessment Of The Institutional Vision Of Catholic Colleges And Universities, Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro Dec 2008

An Assessment Of The Institutional Vision Of Catholic Colleges And Universities, Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro

Journal of Catholic Education

Institutional vision is a philosophical template”a concept of what, at its best, a college or university is like and the kinds of human beings that institution is attempting to cultivate. A content analysis of the institutional vision of a nation-wide sample of Catholic schools was performed and key linguistic components found to constitute a well conceived, viable, and easily diffused mission and vision were isolated. The prevalence of these components in comparison to other types of religious schools and secular four-year institutions is discussed. Findings suggest that Catholic schools are vision-driven institutions that communicate their priorities and defining characteristics by …

Upstream Without A Paddle: Gene Patenting And The Protection Of The "Infostructure", Seth Shulman Dec 2008

Upstream Without A Paddle: Gene Patenting And The Protection Of The "Infostructure", Seth Shulman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The U.S. patent system, designed to protect rights to specific, marketable gadgets, has increasingly over the past few decades granted patents on comparatively abstract and amorphous ideas that stretch the system beyond recognition. Overly broad patents, and patents too far "upstream" from the marketplace, I argue, undermine the patent regime, hamper innovation, and prove exceedingly difficult to adjudicate. Using a series of conceptual and historical analogies, I attempt to assess the patenting of genes and other broad, "upstream" patents from a public policy context, emphasizing, as many are coming to realize, that things work best in the knowledge-based economy when …

Urban Catholic High Schools And Disadvantaged Females, Corinne R. Merrit Dec 2008

Urban Catholic High Schools And Disadvantaged Females, Corinne R. Merrit

Journal of Catholic Education

The purpose of this study was to discover the life experiences of disadvantaged female graduates of urban Catholic high schools and what they say about the capacity of Catholic education to meet their academic, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Based on narrative inquiry, this study was conducted using a series of in-depth, semistructured interviews to elicit the life experiences of 5 participants. Twelve common personal characteristics emerged directly from the narratives of the participants and provided the backdrop for two patterns: (a) the importance of education, and (b) the importance of relationships. This study found the high school experiences met …

Volunteer Functions, Satisfaction, Commitment, And Intention To Leave Government Volunteering, Gisela R. Salas Dec 2008

Volunteer Functions, Satisfaction, Commitment, And Intention To Leave Government Volunteering, Gisela R. Salas

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Traditionally, volunteerism has been deeply embedded in United States history with citizens showing a high level of social participation. In the United States there are 60.8 million volunteers, however, the supply of volunteer labor has been insufficient to meet the demands of organizations with recent reports showing a decrease. Trends as far back as the 1980s indicated that budgetary constraints coupled with increasing demands makes volunteering the logical alternative to sustain service delivery.

Many community, civic, and governmental organizations need and use volunteers to accomplish their missions. One of the greatest challenges, however, is ensuring that the volunteers remain satisfied …

Unsupervised Indexing Of Medline Articles Through Graph-Based Ranking, Jorge R. Herskovic Dec 2008

Unsupervised Indexing Of Medline Articles Through Graph-Based Ranking, Jorge R. Herskovic

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The biomedical literature is extensively catalogued and indexed in MEDLINE. MEDLINE indexing is done by trained human indexers, who identify the most important concepts in each article, and is expensive and inconsistent. Automating the indexing task is difficult: the National Library of Medicine produces the Medical Text Indexer (MTI), which suggests potential indexing terms to the indexers. MTI’s output is not good enough to work unattended. In my thesis, I propose a different way to approach the indexing task called MEDRank. MEDRank creates graphs representing the concepts in biomedical articles and their relationships within the text, and applies graph-based ranking …

Design For Manufacturing (Dfm) Methodology To Implement Friction Stir Welding (Fsw) For Automobile Chassis Fabrication, Harish Bagaitkar, Venkat Allada

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The manufacturing functional feasibility of implementing Friction Stir Welding (FSW) for automobile chassis fabrication is discussed using a case study. in the case study, the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles are applied to manufacture an aluminum automobile chassis. Various DFM issues are addressed while proposing the FSW technique as an alternative to laser welding and metal inert gas welding techniques. DFM guidelines involving joint design change, component geometries, and component elimination are discussed in this paper. by making appropriate changes in the component geometries and joint designs and eliminating some components, more than 50% of the joints in the example …

Comparing Component Functional Template Modeling Experimental Results In An Undergraduate Level Engineering Design Course, Daniel Abbott, Katie Grantham Lough

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Component functional templates are a foundational tool, for the functional modeling method, that novice users can implement to develop functional modeling skills and produce better results by not requiring the modeler to have extensive background knowledge in the method. the templates provide common function layouts of ordinary electromechanical components that are based on historic data collected from design information on a wide range of consumer products. a previous experiment has been performed on a sophomore level design class to assess the change in quality between functional modeling results with and without the use of component functional templates. to address further …

Gender Dependence And Attitudes Toward The Distribution Of Household Labor: A Comparative And Multilevel Analysis, Sheri L. Kunovich, Robert M. Kunovich Dec 2008

Gender Dependence And Attitudes Toward The Distribution Of Household Labor: A Comparative And Multilevel Analysis, Sheri L. Kunovich, Robert M. Kunovich

Sociology Research

We use comparative and multilevel methods to examine attitudes toward the distribution of household labor in 32 countries. We test hypotheses derived from Baxter and Kane’s (1995) gender dependence theory, which suggests complex relationships between societal-level gender dependence, individual-level gender dependence, and gender attitudes. Country-level data are from the United Nations and survey data are from the International Social Survey Programme’s 2002 Family and Changing Gender Roles III module. Our analysis is among the first to combine societal and individual indicators of gender dependence using multilevel modeling and to test for cross-level interactions between societal and individual gender dependence. Results …

Reviewing Digital Scholarship: The Need For Discipline-Based Peer Review, Jeanne Glaubitz Cross Dec 2008

Reviewing Digital Scholarship: The Need For Discipline-Based Peer Review, Jeanne Glaubitz Cross

Articles

Digital scholarship connects scholarly research to students and the public in nontraditional ways. Authors present research in a digital form, which may include links to primary source material and teaching guides. In this format, design and accessibility are important, and unfortunately, those quick to dismiss all digital work as teaching or outreach can overlook the research element. The confusion over what digital scholarship is and how to evaluate it raises questions that can affect promotion and tenure decisions in academic institutions. This paper will examine issues surrounding the availability of peer review for digital scholarship, especially in the field of …
