Theory Of Dissociative Recombination Of A Linear Triatomic Ion With Permanent Electric Dipole Moment: Study Of Hco+, Nicolas Douguet, Viatcheslav Kokoouline, Chris H. Greene

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We present a theoretical description of dissociative recombination of triatomic molecular ions having large permanent dipole moments. The study has been partly motivated by a discrepancy between experimental and theoretical cross sections for dissociative recombination of the HCO+ ion. The HCO+ ion has a considerable permanent dipole moment (D approximate to 4 D), which has not been taken explicitly into account in previous theoretical studies. In the present study, we include explicitly the effect of the permanent electric dipole on the dynamics of the incident electron using the generalized quantum defect theory, and we present the resulting cross section obtained. …

Amish Victimization And Offending: A Rural Subculture's Experiences And Responses To Crime And Justice, Bryan D. Byers Dec 2008

Amish Victimization And Offending: A Rural Subculture's Experiences And Responses To Crime And Justice, Bryan D. Byers

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This article addresses several areas as applied to the rural subculture of the Amish. First, the Old Order Amish will be introduced to the reader. Distinctions will be made between the Old Order Amish and other, cousin, groups. Second, discussion will center on the victimization of Old Order Amish. Several illustrations will be offered along with theories that attempt to explain these phenomena. Third, attention will be given to offending and deviant behavior among the Old Order Amish. Particular focus is placed on Amish youth. Fourth, discussion will turn to the restorative justice model as an effective manner of dealing …

Scots-Irish Women And The Southern Culture Of Violence: The Influence Of Scots-Irish Females On High Rates Of Southern Violence, Emily R. Berthelot, Troy Blanchard, Timothy C. Brown Dec 2008

Scots-Irish Women And The Southern Culture Of Violence: The Influence Of Scots-Irish Females On High Rates Of Southern Violence, Emily R. Berthelot, Troy Blanchard, Timothy C. Brown

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Prior research has documented a higher rate of violent crime within the South relative to other U.S. regions. Some scholars argue that higher rates of violence in the South are due to the lasting effect of the unique culture of the Scots-Irish immigrants that came into the U.S. in the mid-1700's. Though there is a large body of literature examining the link between culture and violence in the South, an implicit assumption of this line of study is that the cultural effect occurs largely within the white male population in rural Southern areas. No study, to our knowledge, has extended …

Sonographic Appearance Of Surgically Repaired Achilles Tendons, Kao-Shang Shih, Ya-Ping Huang, Tyng-Guey Wang, Chun-Sheng Wu, Ching-Chuan Jiang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and purpose: Ultrasonography is an accurate and non-invasive imaging tool for assessing a ruptured Achilles tendon. This study attempts to correlate the sonographic appearances of surgically repaired Achilles tendons with their clinical outcomes. Methods: Ten patients (3 men and 7 women) with surgically repaired Achilles tendons were enrolled in this study. All patients had unilateral Achilles tendon ruptures related to sports injuries. All were treated by the same orthopedic surgeon at a University Hospital, from January 1990 to September 2000. Patients had a mean age of 47.2 years (range: 22-66). Mean post-surgical duration was 6.0 years (range: 2.1-12.1). All patients …

The Ghost Of Robinson Jeffers, Temple Cone Dec 2008

The Ghost Of Robinson Jeffers, Temple Cone

Jeffers Studies

This article explores the paradoxical figure of the ghost in Robinson Jeffers’ poetry as a means of understanding his complex relationship with human presence in nature. In poems like “Tor House” and “The Place for No Story,” Jeffers’ spectral self-representation embodies both his desire for integration with the natural landscape and his ambivalence about human impacts on the environment. While Jeffers strives for an ecocentric vision that would minimize human presence, his use of the ghost figure reveals the inescapable trace of human consciousness in environmental perception and expression. The article argues that this tension ultimately suggests the possibility of …

[1] A worldwide compilation of atmospheric total phosphorus (TP) and phosphate (PO4) concentration and deposition flux observations are combined with transport model simulations to derive the global distribution of concentrations and deposition fluxes of TP and PO4. Our results suggest that mineral aerosols are the dominant source of TP on a global scale (82%), with primary biogenic particles (12%) and combustion sources (5%) important in nondusty regions. Globally averaged anthropogenic inputs are estimated to be ∼5 and 15% for TP and PO4, respectively, and may contribute as much as 50% to the deposition over the oligotrophic ocean where productivity may …

Pride, Prejudice, And Japan's Unified State, Suzanne M. Sable Dec 2008

Pride, Prejudice, And Japan's Unified State, Suzanne M. Sable

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

Japan is undoubtedly one of the foremost economic powers in the world and is internationally recognized as a democratic leader among modern nations. The economy's rapid growth in the mid-twentieth century has been attributed to its booming technical industries, including its electronic and automobile industries. However, Japan is unique in that it has retained traditions associated with typically less advanced nations-namely, a regressive human rights agenda. Although cultural, ethnic, and social minorities continue to exist on Japanese soil today, Japan's social policy of Nihonjinron allows the majority of the population to disregard such minorities and perpetuate the government's vision of …

The Dystopian Potential Of Corporate Law, D. Gordon Smith Dec 2008

The Dystopian Potential Of Corporate Law, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

The community of corporate law scholars in the United States is fragmented. One group, heavily influenced by economic analysis of corporations, is exploring the merits of increasing shareholder power vis-a-vis directors. Another group, animated by concern for social justice, is challenging the traditional, shareholder-centric view of corporate law, arguing instead for a model of stakeholder governance. The current disagreement within corporate law is as fundamental as in any area of law, and the debate is more heated than at any time since the New Deal. This paper is part of a debate on the audacious question, Can Corporate Law Save …
