Narratives Of Legitimacy: Political Discourse In The Early Phase Of The Troubles In Northern Ireland, Sissel Rosland
Narratives Of Legitimacy: Political Discourse In The Early Phase Of The Troubles In Northern Ireland, Sissel Rosland
Peace and Conflict Studies
This article examines the discursive construction of legitimacy in the early phase of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The empirical material covers the debate on internment without trial from 1971 till 1975 – a debate which involved conflicting claims of legitimacy. Some strongly defended internment as a legitimate step in the fight against the IRA, whilst others regarded it as an illegitimate measure employed by a corrupt political regime. These conflicting claims of legitimacy entailed a conceptual battle concerned with the construction and authorisation of political order. The article explores this battle along three dimensions: law, violence, and democracy.

Mobile Phones As A Social Medium For The Deaf: A Uses And Gratifications Study, Katelyn D. Ecker
Mobile Phones As A Social Medium For The Deaf: A Uses And Gratifications Study, Katelyn D. Ecker
Theses
New communications technologies include mobile phones that now provide access to the Internet and text messaging. The present study used the conceptual framework set forth by past uses and gratifications research and shifted focus to the media needs of one specific population: the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Past literature focused on the uses and gratifications of traditional media, but less is known about the consumption of new media by deaf people. Using a convenience sample of hearing and deaf students at RIT, findings from an e-mailed survey instrument showed deaf and hard-of-hearing students were more likely to use instant messaging and …
Analysis Of Tomato Synthetic Seeds For The Development Of An Optimized Encapsulation System, John E. Porter
Analysis Of Tomato Synthetic Seeds For The Development Of An Optimized Encapsulation System, John E. Porter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In vitro propagules of tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) were used to evaluate the effects of alginate encapsulation and subsequent storage for synthetic seed (synseed) production. Nodal segments were encapsulated in hollow alginate beads with and without supplemental nutrients, auxin (0, 2.5 and 5 muM IBA) and fungicide (0, 50 and 100 muM Daconil 2787). Synseeds were stored for 0, 30 and 90 days at 4+/-1°C in darkness and were given a light treatment (none vs. one week at 25+/-2°C with a 16 hour photoperiod) before sowing in a greenhouse hydroponic system. There was no survival across all treatments of …

The systematic positions of Cladophoropsis robusta and Willeella mexicana, both occurring along the tropical Pacific coast of America, have long been uncertain. Willeella mexicana has been generally accepted as a synonym of C. robusta, which is currently placed in the genus Struveopsis. Reinvestigation of type material and recently collected specimens from Mexico and Panama, including culture observations, along with a molecular phylogenetic analysis inferred from rDNA ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences, confirm that both taxa belong to the same, morphologically variable species. Thallus architecture ranges from stipitate, Struveopsis-like blades (produced by apical cell divisions and formation of opposite and flabellate branches) to Valoniopsis-like …

Technological Strategic Planning And Globalization Impact: Fine-Tuning Strategic Planning Methodology, Plamen Miltenoff
Technological Strategic Planning And Globalization Impact: Fine-Tuning Strategic Planning Methodology, Plamen Miltenoff
Theses and Dissertations
Through this research, I sought to determine how technology leadership, as part of academic administration conducts strategic planning in educational technology. The focus in educational technology falls on the various tools of online interaction while the focus on strategic planning falls on SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. Under the impact of globalization, it is expected that the realm of external data necessary for SWOT analysis must shift from within national boundaries to international data gathering, thus providing a realistic assessment and enabling feasible strategic planning in a global economy. The need for revision was based on a review …

Considerably many numbers of studies on country-of-origin(hereafter COO) effects have been presented in international business and marketing areas. Recent studies have been included the effects of COO of manufacture, parts, and design, as well as the effects of brand origin, reflected by the accelerating convergent manufacture circumstances and increasingly competitive environments. Moderating constructs such as knowledge of product category and involvement as individual variables, have been also introduced and researched in various angles. In addition, how the effects of COO occur as processes is also argued in previous studies. This research has attempted to explain business corporation`s strategic decisions on …

The Return Of The Beehives, Brylcreem And Botanical! An Historical Review Of Hair Care Practices With A View To Opportunities For Sustainable Design, Sabine Hielscher, Tom Fisher, Tim Cooper
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper considers hair care as a network of activities and routines which have consequences for environmental sustainability and which may be modified by design. It proposes that together with cultural knowledge, embodied skill and objects, these activities can be thought of as ‘practices' that are reproduced and also change through time (Shove 2006). They consume resources and are therefore implicated in the issue of environmental sustainability. The paper draws on research into hair care practices conducted through in-depth interviews with female participants, as part of the first author's PhD study. The discussion here however centres on historical work and …
Authorities/Knowledge/Beliefs/Outcomes: 'Governing' In The Profession Of Graphic Design In The Us, Kate Ann B Lamere
Authorities/Knowledge/Beliefs/Outcomes: 'Governing' In The Profession Of Graphic Design In The Us, Kate Ann B Lamere
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This exploratory research examines an under-evaluated aspect of graphic design in the United States: the nature of the profession. Discourse analysis that applies the theory of governmentality is used to assess previously collected, open-ended interviews with graphic designers, as well as other source material. Based on the late work of Michel Foucault, governmentality considers how authorities govern through the creation and dissemination of knowledge, which works through individuals' desires and beliefs and leads to unpredictable outcomes. In this research, two ‘authorities' within the graphic design profession are identified and considered – design competitions and graphic design higher education. Both authorities …

Designing In The Street: Innovation In-Situ, Wendy March, Bas Raijmakers
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper suggests that taking the design process into the field and constantly engaging with the site to observe, intervene, brainstorm, prototype and create fosters unique forms of inspiration and innovation. How does a consideration of participation of both the designer and the user in the space change the design process? With participation comes understanding of the situation and by elaborating on possible futures with users, designers can find lucid innovations. We describe a project conducted by students from the Interaction Design course at the Royal College of Art in London which used a variety of approaches to speculate on …
Stable Carbon Isotope Discrimination By Form Ic Rubisco From Rhodobacter Sphaeroides, Phaedra Thomas
Stable Carbon Isotope Discrimination By Form Ic Rubisco From Rhodobacter Sphaeroides, Phaedra Thomas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Variations in the relative amounts of ¹²C and ¹³C in microbial biomass can be used to infer the pathway(s) autotrophs use to fix and assimilate dissolved inorganic carbon. Discrimination against ¹³C by the enzymes catalyzing autotrophic carbon fixation is a major factor dictating the stable carbon isotopic composition (δ¹³C = {[¹³C/¹²Csample/¹³C/¹²Cstandard] - 1} X 1000) of biomass. Six different forms of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase or RubisCO (IA, IB, IC, ID, II, and III), the carboxylase of the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle (CBB), are utilized by algae and autotrophic bacteria that rely on the CBB cycle for carbon fixation. …
Affective Sustainability. Is This What Timelessness Really Means?, Kristina Borjesson
Affective Sustainability. Is This What Timelessness Really Means?, Kristina Borjesson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Sustainability is always about regard to the environment: an intelligent use of resources and not returning to nature what it cannot degrade without long-term damage. Politics, business and thus research have been predominantly concerned with the direct impact on the environment of the diverse human activities in our society. There is of course awareness about all the indirect effects caused by these activities but as these effects are more complicated to identify and calculate, it could reasonably be suggested that these have not got the same attention and hence have not been thoroughly explored. Important resources are required for the …

The paper presents a research, the aim of which is to find out how graphic expressions and visual language can be used for persuasion. The research material consists of outdoor advertisements photographed in their actual exhibition places in a city environment. Outdoor advertising media, which are used to communicate visual messages from a sender to several addressees, participate in building the visual city culture and open manifold solutions in design. The visual language used in the research material is analyzed in order to find out how advertising messages, their denotations and connotations, are constructed and how arguments used for persuasion …
What Can Talk Tell Us About Design? Considering Practice Through Symbolic Interactionism And Conversation Analysis, Arlene Oak
DRS Biennial Conference Series
How can scholars conduct rigorous research into the social activities that help constitute design practice? This paper considers this question through exploring how the interactive aspects of design may be fruitfully examined from the perspective of social psychology, especially through the approaches and methods of Symbolic Interactionism (SI) and Conversation Analysis (CA). The social activities of design refer to those situations wherein design is conducted in relation to face-to-face talk, or conversation. Since many aspects of design involve discussion, this paper argues that an SI-informed CA can offer an effective approach that may help us to better understand how communication …

Media Communication, Consumption And Use: The Changing Role Of The Designer, Leon Cruickshank, Martyn Evans
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Consumers are changing the way in which they create, experience and consume media. User Generated Content (UGC) marks a shift in the way in which ordinary people are now able to contribute to the creation of media. They have become active citizens in what is now a two way conversation. The advent of UGC has created new challenges for communication designers who now need to take on the role of a facilitator in this process. The challenge for communication design is not only to identify appropriate methods for communication, but to understand how best to facilitate connections between users such …
A Colour Design Tool Based On Empirical Studies, Li-Chen Ou, Ming Ronnier Luo, Guihua Cui
A Colour Design Tool Based On Empirical Studies, Li-Chen Ou, Ming Ronnier Luo, Guihua Cui
DRS Biennial Conference Series
A colour design tool targeted at both unskilled consumers and professional designers is currently under development, on the basis of psychophysical studies into semantic associations of colour, the cultural influences and colour harmony. From experimental results for single-colour associations, 3 underlying factors were identified: 'warm-cool', 'heavy-light' and 'active-passive', which were found to agree well with those identified by earlier research. For colour-combination associations, an 'additive property' of colour association was discovered: the semantic score of a colour combination can be determined by averaging semantic scores of each constituent colour in that combination. According to the experimental results, there were 4 …

There have been many studies conducted on television and its effects. Since the 1950's, when television emerged, there has been an influx of patterns and behaviors associated with television viewing and programming. Many researchers are fascinated with television and the reactions of those who are directly affected by it. People have been known to act out in many ways as a result of something they saw on television. Many believe that television viewing directly affects a person's mind.
An analysis of the results of this qualitative study indicates that college students perceive television has an impact on viewers. Throughout the …
