Review Of Patrick Heelan, Space-Perception And The Philosophy Of Science, Cliff Hooker Dec 2008

Review Of Patrick Heelan, Space-Perception And The Philosophy Of Science, Cliff Hooker

Research Resources

Heelan has taken a rich philosophical framework and within its categories woven a marvellously detailed and wondrously wide tapestry. That tapestry includes an exciting illumination of Western art and pictorial understanding generally; the sweep of history, scientific and cultural; the enterprise of science and the nature and roles of technology in both science and culture. Heelan's book then has interest at several different levels; in ascending order: there are the specific theses about vision and about science; there is the connecting of philosophy of visual art and philosophy of science; there is Heelan's attempt to set both of these latter …

Methods And Apparatus For Preventing A Third Party From Overhearing A Telephone Conversation, Thaddeus Gabara, Vladimir I. Prodanov

Electrical Engineering

Methods and apparatus are provided for preventing a third party from listening to a conversation between at least two participants on a telephone. The telephone generates an audio stimulus signal that is presented through a secondary speaker. The audio stimulus signal may be, for example, pseudorandom noise or a cancellation signal. According to one aspect of the invention, the telephone ensures that the audio stimulus signal does not significantly impair the conversation for the at least two participants. To prevent the third party from listening to the local portion of the conversation, the audio stimulus signal is subtracted from the …

Secondary Electron Imaging Of Embedded Defects In Carbon Nanofiber Via Interconnects, Makoto Suzuki, Yusuke Ominami, Takashi Sekiguchi, Cary Y. Yang Dec 2008

Secondary Electron Imaging Of Embedded Defects In Carbon Nanofiber Via Interconnects, Makoto Suzuki, Yusuke Ominami, Takashi Sekiguchi, Cary Y. Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Carbon nanofiber (CNF) via interconnect test structures are fabricated with the bottom-up process proposed by Li et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 82, 2491 (2003)] for next-generation integrated circuit technology. Critical defects in the interconnect structure are examined using scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that secondary electron signal with optimized incident beam energy is useful for detecting embedded defects, including unexposed CNF plugs and voids in the dielectric layer. The defect imaging mechanisms are elucidated based on beam-induced charging of the specimen surface.

A Front End Switched Rectifier Dc Source For Neutral Point Balancing Of A Npc Three-Level Inverter For The Full Modulation Range, K. Siva Kumar, Sukumar De, K. Gopakumar, Gopal Mondal, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A switched DC voltage three level NPC is proposed in this paper to eliminate capacitor balancing problems in conventional three-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter. the proposed configuration requires only one DC link with a voltage Vdc/2, where Vdc is the DC link voltage in a conventional NPC inverter. to get rated DC link voltage (Vdc), the voltage source is alternately connected in parallel to one of the two series capacitors using two switches and two diodes with device voltage rating of Vdc/2. the frequency at which the voltage source is switched is independent and will not affect the operation …

Graph Distances In The Data-Stream Model, Joan Feigenbaum, Sampath Kannan, Andrew Mcgregor, Siddharth Suri, Jian Zhang Dec 2008

Graph Distances In The Data-Stream Model, Joan Feigenbaum, Sampath Kannan, Andrew Mcgregor, Siddharth Suri, Jian Zhang

Faculty Publications

We explore problems related to computing graph distances in the data-stream model. The goal is to design algorithms that can process the edges of a graph in an arbitrary order given only a limited amount of working memory. We are motivated by both the practical challenge of processing massive graphs such as the web graph and the desire for a better theoretical understanding of the data-stream model. In particular, we are interested in the trade-offs between model parameters such as per-data-item processing time, total space, and the number of passes that may be taken over the stream. These trade-offs are …

Analysis Of Adverse Events In Drug Safety: A Multivariate Approach Using Stratified Quasi-Least Squares, Hanjoo Kim, Justine Shults, Scott Patterson, Robert Goldberg-Alberts

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Safety assessment in drug development involves numerous statistical challenges, and yet statistical methodologies and their applications to safety data have not been fully developed, despite a recent increase of interest in this area. In practice, a conventional univariate approach for analysis of safety data involves application of the Fisher's exact test to compare the proportion of subjects who experience adverse events (AEs) between treatment groups; This approach ignores several common features of safety data, including the presence of multiple endpoints, longitudinal follow-up, and a possible relationship between the AEs within body systems. In this article, we propose various regression modeling …

Photopolymerization-Induced Crystallization And Phase Separation In Poly(Ethylene Oxide)/Triacrylate Blends, Soo Jeoung Park, Thein Kyu Dec 2008

Photopolymerization-Induced Crystallization And Phase Separation In Poly(Ethylene Oxide)/Triacrylate Blends, Soo Jeoung Park, Thein Kyu

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

The present article describes experimental and theoretical investigations of miscibility and crystallization behavior of blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and triacrylate monomer (TA) using differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. The PEO/TA blends manifested a single T(g) varying systematically with composition suggestive of a miscible character in their amorphous states. Moreover, there occurs melting point depression of PEO crystals with increasing TA. A phase diagram was subsequently established that exhibited a solid+liquid coexistence region bound by the liquidus and solidus lines, followed by an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) at a lower temperature. The emerging phase morphology was investigated to …
