The Role Of Curcumin In Human Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, Shawna A. Shirley Oct 2008

The Role Of Curcumin In Human Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, Shawna A. Shirley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Curcumin is the yellow pigment found in the Indian spice curry. It has anti-inflammatory, ant-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and wound healing properties. It is widely used in industry for its flavor as a spice and as a coloring agent because of its brilliant yellow color. It is also used as a dye for textiles and as an additive to cosmetics. Dendritic cells (DCs) are the sentinels of the immune system and functions as the bridge between the innate and adaptive immune response. The effect of curcumin on DCs is poorly understood. A study shows curcumin prevents the immuno-stimulatory function of …

Design And Analysis Of A Positively Engaged Continuously Variable Transmission, Brandon Levi Haupt Oct 2008

Design And Analysis Of A Positively Engaged Continuously Variable Transmission, Brandon Levi Haupt

Theses and Dissertations

With energy demands at an all time high, mechanical power systems are under great scrutiny. Substantial efforts are being made throughout the world to reduce energy use in common mechanical systems such as the internal combustion engine and transmission system. Eliminating or reducing efficiency losses in the transmission is a potential source of improving the efficiency of the system. To do so, various alternative types of transmissions are being investigated. At Brigham Young University, development of a Positively Engaged Continuously Variable Transmission (PECVT) is progressing. In addition to the efficiency increases that would occur as a result of operating the …

The Importance And Influence Of Philosophical Thinking For Librarians, Nazli Alkan Oct 2008

The Importance And Influence Of Philosophical Thinking For Librarians, Nazli Alkan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Nazli Alkan The Importance and Influence of Philosophical Thinking for Librarians (html) PDF September 2008 This paper explores the importance and influence of the adoption of philosophical thinking by today's librarians and to encourage them in such thinking. The principal findings of the paper include the following: that the librarian's philosophical thinking is a process through which something is systematically and critically questioned in the framework of the library, the librarian and the profession of librarianship; related meanings, values and purposes are identified; and a meaningful judgement is reached. Although there are some librarians today who are engaged in intellectual …

State Of The University, 2008, President Joseph A. Chapman

State of the University Address

Describing NDSU as "a place of impact," President Joseph A. Chapman outlined bold initiatives for the future during his 10th annual State of the University Address. Chapman said NDSU began a transitional journey 10 years ago as each program developed its own next level of excellence. He said NDSU is preparing students for and assisting business with the global marketplace, noting that the land-grant ideal mandates preparation for society’s changes. During this extraordinary decade, he said NDSU’s growth has meant an additional $1 billion to the state’s economy. He praised the faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university …

The Dark Energy Problem, Michael Harney, Ioannis Haranas Oct 2008

The Dark Energy Problem, Michael Harney, Ioannis Haranas

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The proposal for dark energy based on Type Ia Supernovae redshift is examined. It is found that the linear and non-Linear portions in the Hubble Redshift are easily explained by the use of the Hubble Sphere model, where two interacting Hubble spheres sharing a common mass-energy density result in a decrease in energy as a function of distance from the object being viewed. Interpreting the non-linear portion of the redshift curve as a decrease in interacting volume between neighboring Hubble Spheres removes the need for a dark energy.

Welfare Reform And Juvenile Arrests, Tami Gurley-Calvez, Bethany Claus Widick Oct 2008

Welfare Reform And Juvenile Arrests, Tami Gurley-Calvez, Bethany Claus Widick

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Social policy, such as the legalization of abortion and the federal bans on lead in the 1970s, has been shown to significantly impact crime rates. With recent increases in juvenile arrests and violent crime rates, we explore whether further social policy—namely the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) welfare reform—has had an impact on crime.

There are various mechanisms by which the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, created by the 1996 PRWORA welfare reform, may influence criminal activity, especially among older children. Many welfare recipients were required to participate in work and education activities, which …

Demonstrative Induction And The Skeleton Of Inference, P.D. Magnus Oct 2008

Demonstrative Induction And The Skeleton Of Inference, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

It has been common wisdom for centuries that scientific inference cannot be deductive; if it is inference at all, it must be a distinctive kind of inductive inference. According to demonstrative theories of induction, however, important scientific inferences are not inductive in the sense of requiring ampliative inference rules at all. Rather, they are deductive inferences with sufficiently strong premises. General considerations about inferences suffice to show that there is no difference in justification between an inference construed demonstratively or ampliatively. The inductive risk may be shouldered by premises or rules, but it cannot be shirked. Demonstrative theories of induction …

Using Social Cognitive Theory To Predict Physical Activity In Inner-City African American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry Oct 2008

Using Social Cognitive Theory To Predict Physical Activity In Inner-City African American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Researchers using social cognitive theory and employing built environment constructs to predict physical activity (PA) in inner-city African American children is quite limited. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to evaluate the ability of important social cognitive variables (e.g., self-efficacy) and built environment constructs (e.g., neighborhood hazards) to predict African American children’s PA. Children (N = 331, ages 10–14) completed questionnaires assessing social cognitive theory constructs and PA. Using multiple regression analyses we were able to account for 19% of the variance in PA. Based on standardized beta weights, the best predictors of PA were time spent outside …
