Pile Downdrag During Construction Of Two Bridge Abutments, Brian Keith Sears

Theses and Dissertations

Two steel pipe piles in place in abutments for two different bridge constructions sites were instrumented with strain gauges to measure the magnitude of negative skin friction. The piles were monitored before, during and up to 19 months after construction was completed. The load versus depth and time in each pile is discussed. Maximum observed dragloads ranged from 98 to 127 kips. A comparison with two methods for calculating dragloads is presented. Both comparison methods were found to be conservative, with the Briaud and Tucker (1997) approach more closely estimating the observed load versus depth behavior.

Local Electron-Transfer Rate Measurements On Modified And Unmodified Glassy-Carbon Electrodes, David O. Wipf, Robert C. Tenent

Publications

A natural and artificial distribution of electron-transfer activity on glassy-carbon electrodes can be observed and quantified by use of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). A large (7-fold) spread in rate-constant is found for randomly sampled sites on polished, untreated glassy-carbon surfaces. Direct-mode oxidation with the SECM tip was used to produce small regions of oxidized carbon on a polished surface. A large increase in electron-transfer rate for the Fe(II/III) ion is observed on the locally oxidized carbon surface in comparison to the unoxidized region. The majority of law review articles addressing lying and deception in negotiation have argued, in one form or another, that liars and deceivers could be successfully reined in and controlled if only the applicable ethics rules were strengthened, and if corresponding enforcement powers were sufficiently beefed up and effectively executed. This article takes a different approach, arguing that the applicable ethics rules will likely never be strengthened, and, furthermore, that even if they were, they would be difficult to enforce in any meaningful way, at least in the context of negotiation.
