Transcriptional Response Of Mexican Axolotls To Ambystoma Tigrinum Virus (Atv) Infection, Jennifer D. Cotter, Andrew Storfer, Robert B. Page, Christopher K. Beachy, S. Randal Voss

Background
Very little is known about the immunological responses of amphibians to pathogens that are causing global population declines. We used a custom microarray gene chip to characterize gene expression responses of axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) to an emerging viral pathogen, Ambystoma tigrinum virus (ATV).
Result
At 0, 24, 72, and 144 hours post-infection, spleen and lung samples were removed for estimation of host mRNA abundance and viral load. A total of 158 up-regulated and 105 down-regulated genes were identified across all time points using statistical and fold level criteria. The presumptive functions of these genes suggest a robust …

Contact Block Reduction Method For Ballistic Quantum Transport With Semi-Empirical Sp3d5s* Tight Binding Band Models, Hoon Ryu, Gerhard Klimeck
Contact Block Reduction Method For Ballistic Quantum Transport With Semi-Empirical Sp3d5s* Tight Binding Band Models, Hoon Ryu, Gerhard Klimeck
Other Nanotechnology Publications
The utility of the Contact Block Reduction method (CBR) to find the retarded Green’s function for ballistic quantum devices with semi-empirical tight binding band (TB) models is discussed. This work shows that the original method needs several modifications to be used with TB models. In the common case where two contacts are used for transport in quantum wires, our approach computes the transmission coefficients with much less computing load than the state-of-the-art Recursive Green’s Function (RGF) algorithm.

We present a measurement of the shapes of b-jets using 300pb-1 of data obtained with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) in pp̄ collisions at center-of-mass energy s=1.96TeV. This measurement covers a wide transverse momentum range, from 52 to 300GeV/c. Samples of heavy-flavor enhanced jets together with inclusive jets are used to extract the average shapes of b-jets. The b-jets are expected to be broader than inclusive jets. Moreover, b-jets containing a single b-quark are expected to be narrower than those containing a bb̄ pair from gluon splitting. The measured b-jet shapes are found to be significantly broader …

We present a new compilation of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), a new data set of low-redshift nearby-Hubble-flow SNe, and new analysis procedures to work with these heterogeneous compilations. This "Union" compilation of 414 SNe Ia, which reduces to 307 SNe after selection cuts, includes the recent large samples of SNe Ia from the Supernova Legacy Survey and ESSENCE Survey, the older data sets, as well as the recently extended data set of distant supernovae observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). A single, consistent, and blind analysis procedure is used for all the various SN Ia subsamples, and a …

Our understanding of physical processes in photodissociation regions or photon-dominated regions (PDRs) largely depends on the ability of spectral synthesis codes to reproduce the observed infrared emission-line spectrum. In this paper, we explore the sensitivity of a single PDR model to microphysical details. Our calculations use the Cloudy spectral synthesis code, recently modified to include a wealth of PDR physical processes. We show how the chemical/thermal structure of a PDR, along with the calculated spectrum, changes when the treatment of physical processes such as grain physics and atomic/molecular rates are varied. We find a significant variation in the intensities of …
