Ice-Limit Of Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory, T. Heinzl, A. Ilderton, K. Langfeld, M. Lavelle, D. Mcmullan Oct 2008

Ice-Limit Of Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory, T. Heinzl, A. Ilderton, K. Langfeld, M. Lavelle, D. Mcmullan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper we describe gauge invariant multi-quark states generalising the path integral framework developed by Parrinello, Jona-Lasinio and Zwanziger to amend the Faddeev-Popov approach. This allows us to produce states such that, in a limit which we call the ice-limit, fermions are dressed with glue exclusively from the fundamental modular region associated with Coulomb gauge. The limit can be taken analytically without difficulties, avoiding the Gribov problem. This is llustrated by an unambiguous construction of gauge invariant mesonic states for which we simulate the static quark--antiquark potential.

Guidance Booklet On Safe Handling Of Nanoparticles, Declan Mccormack, Norbert Malanowski, Paul Sermon, Juergen Hoeck

Articles

Nanotechnologies are a fast evolving scientific and technological field with a high potential impact on science, economy and society. Like with all new and quickly developing technologies it is important to weigh benefits versus risks at the earliest possible convenience. Building on the results of the ImPart project, this booklet is intended to give a review of the actual knowledge in the field of nanospecific risks, deriving recommendations for the safe handling of nanoparticles for executives in industry, public organizations and NGOs. This booklet is also intended to give an outlook on possible developments in the near future and "life …

Electronic Tax Fraud - Are There "Sales Zappers" In Japan?, Richard Thompson Ainsworth Oct 2008

Electronic Tax Fraud - Are There "Sales Zappers" In Japan?, Richard Thompson Ainsworth

Faculty Scholarship

Although there is no public acknowledgement - in the press, in a court case, though any announcement by the Japanese National Tax Administration, or in any academic studies or papers - that Zappers and Phantom-ware are a fraud problem in Japan, a number of factors suggest that Japan may be very fertile ground for technology-assisted cash skimming fraud. Those factors include: (1) a high concentration of small to medium sized businesses; (2) the fact that the retail economy is highly cash-based; and (3) the high level of technology acceptance in the Japanese retail sector - electronic cash registers (ECRs) and …

Extreme-Ultraviolet Polarimeter Utilizing Laser-Generated High-Order Harmonics, Nicole Brimhall, Matthew Turner, Nicholas Herrick, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross Oct 2008

Extreme-Ultraviolet Polarimeter Utilizing Laser-Generated High-Order Harmonics, Nicole Brimhall, Matthew Turner, Nicholas Herrick, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross

Faculty Publications

We describe an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) polarimeter that employs laser-generated high-order harmonics as the light source. The polarimeter is designed to characterize materials and thin films for use with EUV light. Laser high harmonics are highly directional with easily rotatable linear polarization, not typically available with other EUV sources. The harmonics have good wavelength coverage, potentially spanning the entire EUV from a few to a hundred nanometers. Our instrument is configured to measure reflectances from 14 to 30 nm and has ~180 spectral resolution (lambda/delta lambda). The reflection from a sample surface can be measured over a continuous range of incident …

A Study Of Antimicrobial Properties Of Fabric Treated With Silane And N-Halamine Complex, Sangeeta Yadav Oct 2008

A Study Of Antimicrobial Properties Of Fabric Treated With Silane And N-Halamine Complex, Sangeeta Yadav

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Dimethyl hydantoin (DMH) – Isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane adduct was prepared and applied onto the fabric using pad – dry – pad – dry – cure method. The treated fabric is then chlorinated using NaOCl (6% and 10%) to impart the antimicrobial properties. The treated fabric surface and the chlorine percentage present at the surface of the fabric are evaluated using SEM- EDX and peak of NCO was determined using FTIR analysis. The fabrics were tested for antimicrobial properties using ATCC 2695 gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and ATCC 8739 gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli. The treated samples provided very good …

Using Clicker 5 To Enhance Emergent Literacy In Young Learners, Howard P. Parette, Jack Hourcade, Jenny M. Dinelli, Nichole M. Boeckmann

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Best practices in emergent literacy instruction for young children acknowledge and facilitate the smooth progression between children’s early engagement with print materials and subsequent fuller literacy mastery. In so doing, model programs target five key emergent literacy skills. The rapid rise in the breadth and depth of educational technology, including computer software, is offering early childhood education professionals new and powerful tools in teaching early literacy. This paper offers a brief review of best practices in emergent literacy, notes the growth of technology in this instruction, and examines the potential contributions of one specific software program, Clicker 5, in helping …

The Challenge Of Implementing Gender Budgets, John R. Bartle, Marilyn Marks Rubin, Sikarn Issarachaiyos

Public Administration Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Over the last three decades, countries all over the world, supported by the international community of nations, have been moving toward more equitable treatment of women. In 1979, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), often referred to as the international bill of rights for women. CEDAW has been ratified by more than 90 percent of the nations in the world, with the United States the only industrialized nation in the world that has yet to ratify it.

Delegates to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women held in …

Tending To Richmond's Children: Community Strategies To Bridge Service Gaps, Judith D. Moore, Jessamyn Taylor Oct 2008

Tending To Richmond's Children: Community Strategies To Bridge Service Gaps, Judith D. Moore, Jessamyn Taylor

National Health Policy Forum

The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to Richmond, Virginia, in October 2008 to explore social and environmental determinants of children’s health, including the impacts that poverty and exposure to lead-based paint have on birth outcomes, child development, and school readiness; and the community's efforts to address them. Though not large in population terms, Richmond faces many of the social and economic problems often common in larger urban areas—concentrated poverty, migration of wealth and services to the surrounding counties, a high infant mortality rate, and troubled schools. The site visit explored community strategies to improve birth outcomes and …
