Plurality Of Principal Angles For A Given Pseudo-Brewster Angle When Polarized Light Is Reflected At A Dielectric-Conductor Interface, R. M.A. Azzam, A. Alsamman Oct 2008

Plurality Of Principal Angles For A Given Pseudo-Brewster Angle When Polarized Light Is Reflected At A Dielectric-Conductor Interface, R. M.A. Azzam, A. Alsamman

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The pseudo-Brewster angle ϕpB of minimum reflectance for p-polarized light and the principal angle ϕ¯ at which incident linearly polarized light of the proper azimuth is reflected circularly polarized are considered as functions of the complex relative dielectric function ε of a dielectric–conductor interface over the entire complex ε plane. In particular, the spread of ϕ¯for a given ϕpB is determined, and the maximum difference (ϕ¯−ϕpB)max is obtained as a function of ϕpB . The maximum difference (ϕ¯−ϕpB)max approaches 45° and 0 in the limit as ϕpB→0 and 90°, respectively. ForϕpB<22.666° , multiple principal angles ϕ¯i , i=1,2,3 , appear for each ε in a subdomain of fractional optical constants. …

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether aggressive phototherapy to prevent neurotoxic effects of bilirubin benefits or harms infants with extremely low birth weight (1000 g or less).

METHODS: We randomly assigned 1974 infants with extremely low birth weight at 12 to 36 hours of age to undergo either aggressive or conservative phototherapy. The primary outcome was a composite of death or neurodevelopmental impairment determined for 91% of the infants by investigators who were unaware of the treatment assignments.

RESULTS: Aggressive phototherapy, as compared with conservative phototherapy, significantly reduced the mean peak serum bilirubin level (7.0 vs. 9.8 mg per deciliter [120 …

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of self-image congruity and alternative attractiveness on commitment and store loyalty when customers purchase clothes in a department store. A survey was conducted for this study and 530 answer sheets were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results are as follows: First, self-image congruity has a significant positive effect on affective commitment and continuance commitment. Second, alternative attractiveness has no significant effect on affective and continuance commitment. Third, both affective commitment and continuance commitment have a significant effect on behavior intentions such as repurchase intention, word-of-mouth, and willing to pay …

Regulatory Failure And Judicial Intervention: Does Public Interest Litigation Help?, Francis Xavier Rathinam, A.V. Raja

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

Environmental problems are typically not addressable by the market and private law to redress harm and regulation by the state is the commonly suggested alternative. The public choice perspective on regulation however points to the possibility of regulation not being effective in the light of political capture and corruption in enforcement. Under such circumstances who regulates the regulator? In India the judiciary seems to have taken on this role through an innovation in procedural law namely Public Interest Litigation (PIL). PIL has been lauded as an effective method of ensuring enforcement of regulatory standards. We test whether this holds true …

A Network-Constrained Empirical Bayes Method For Analysis Of Genomic Data, Caiyan Li, Zhi Wei, Hongzhe Li Oct 2008

A Network-Constrained Empirical Bayes Method For Analysis Of Genomic Data, Caiyan Li, Zhi Wei, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Empirical Bayes methods are widely used in the analysis of microarray gene expression data in order to identify the differentially expressed genes or genes that are associated with other general phenotypes. Available methods often assume that genes are independent. However, genes are expected to function interactively and to form molecular modules to affect the phenotypes. In order to account for regulatory dependency among genes, we propose in this paper a network-constrained empirical Bayes method for analyzing genomic data in the framework of general linear models, where the dependency of genes is modeled by a discrete Markov random field model defined …
