A Competitive Hybridization Model Predicts Probe Signal Intensity On High Density Dna Microarrays, Shuzhao Li, Alex Pozhitkov, Marius Brouwer Nov 2008

A Competitive Hybridization Model Predicts Probe Signal Intensity On High Density Dna Microarrays, Shuzhao Li, Alex Pozhitkov, Marius Brouwer

Faculty Publications

A central, unresolved problem of DNA microarray technology is the interpretation of different signal intensities from multiple probes targeting the same transcript. We propose a competitive hybridization model for DNA microarray hybridization. Our model uses a probe-specific dissociation constant that is computed with current nearest neighbor model and existing parameters, and only four global parameters that are fitted to Affymetrix Latin Square data. This model can successfully predict signal intensities of individual probes, therefore makes it possible to quantify the absolute concentration of targets. Our results offer critical insights into the design and data interpretation of DNA microarrays.

Breast Cancer Fatalism: The Role Of Women's Perceptions Of The Health Care System, Allyson G. Hall, Amal J. Khoury, Ellen D.S. Lopez, Nedra Lisovicz, Amanda Avis-Williams, Amal K. Mitra Nov 2008

Breast Cancer Fatalism: The Role Of Women's Perceptions Of The Health Care System, Allyson G. Hall, Amal J. Khoury, Ellen D.S. Lopez, Nedra Lisovicz, Amanda Avis-Williams, Amal K. Mitra

Faculty Publications

Cancer fatalism, which can be understood as the belief that cancer is a death sentence, has been found to be a deterrent to preventive cancer screening participation. This study examines factors associated with breast cancer fatalism among women. We analyzed data from a 2003 survey of women 40 years of age. The survey collected information about respondents' knowledge and attitudes regarding breast health. Analyses compared the characteristics of women who reported and those who did not report a fatalistic attitude. Women with a fatalistic attitude were more likely to be African American, to have a family history of breast cancer, …

Magnetic Field Measurements Of O Stars With Fors 1 At The Vlt., S. Hubrig, M. Schöller, R. Schnerr, J. González, Richard Ignace, H. Henrichs

ETSU Faculty Works

Context. The presence of magnetic fields in O-type stars has been suspected for a long time. The discovery of these fields would explain a wide range of well documented enigmatic phenomena in massive stars, in particular cyclical wind variability, Hα emission variations, chemical peculiarity, narrow X-ray emission lines, and non-thermal radio/X-ray emission. Aims.To investigate the incidence of magnetic fields in O stars, we acquired 38 new spectropolarimetric observations with FORS 1 (FOcal Reducer low dispersion Spectrograph) mounted on the 8-m Kueyen telescope of the VLT. Methods.Spectropolarimetric observations were obtained at different phases for a sample of 13 O …

The Politics Of Economic Performance, And The Trade Union Movement, 1970-1982, John Hogan, Gary Murphy Nov 2008

The Politics Of Economic Performance, And The Trade Union Movement, 1970-1982, John Hogan, Gary Murphy

Articles

Here we argue that the relationship between the main Irish political parties and the trade unions, in the 1970s, was largely based upon political imperatives, with an economic subtext. The absence of strong ideological difference between the two largest Irish political parties meant they were willing to deal with the trade union moment in a somewhat similar fashion. At the start of the 1970s, the Fianna Fail government prodded the ICTU into a “voluntary” national wage agreement. This agreement was regarded as a means of stabilising the economy, attracting foreign investment, and improving Fianna Fail’s image with the electorate. While …

Challenges To Persian Gulf Security: How Should The United States Respond?, Judith S. Yaphe Nov 2008

Challenges To Persian Gulf Security: How Should The United States Respond?, Judith S. Yaphe

Strategic Forums

Persian Gulf security challenges will increasingly pose difficult choices for the next administration. Iran’s quest for regional preeminence, driven by the impulses of exceptionalism and self-sufficiency that are deeply engrained in the country’s political psyche, will not slacken any time soon. Seeing such preeminence as its historic prerogative, Tehran still aspires to acquire a military posture, including nuclear capability, commensurate with that vision.

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks Nov 2008

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bat hemoparasite studies have focused on bats as vectors for viruses that cause human diseases such as rabies, Ebola, and Henipavirus, while ectoparastite studies have looked at a broad range of ecological and abiotic factors that influence ectoparasite prevalence including age, sex, roosting ecology, and habitat. Yet diet had been largely ignored in both hemoparasite and ectoparasite studies. In this study, I looked at diet as a possible factor in hemoparasite load and also looked at the relationships between hemoparasites, health (with weight as a proxy), and ectoparasites. Four guilds were compared, sanguinivores, omnivores, frugivores, and nectarivores, with an overall …

Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone Nov 2008

Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone

Defense Horizons

The abuse of prisoners by U.S. Soldiers at Abu Ghraib had broad strategic consequences, leading many people around the world to question the legitimacy of U.S. goals and activities in Iraq. This paper draws on extensive unclassified reports from multiple investigations that followed Abu Ghraib, and applies key psychological as well as social-situational perspectives to develop a better grasp of the causative factors. From a psychological standpoint, most young adults are powerfully inclined to behave in accord with the social conventions and pressures around them. Especially in ambiguous circumstances, then, it is important that standards of behavior be clear and …

Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey Nov 2008

Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey

Faculty Works

Interscholastic athletic directors have a tremendous responsibility in guiding athletic programs in today’s ever-changing society. Their decisions on the numerous issues confronting them reflect what they perceive as ethical (Conn & Gerdes, 1998). The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of selected athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex regarding the issues and factors related to the ethical conduct of personnel involved in the directing of interscholastic athletic programs. To accomplish this, the researcher collected qualitative data from eight athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex who are responsible for at least three interscholastic athletic programs that …

Focus On Rna Isolation: Obtaining Rna For Microrna (Mirna) Expression Profiling Analyses Of Neural Tissue, Wang-Xia Wang, Bernard R. Wilfred, Donald A. Baldwin, R. Benjamin Isett, Na Ren, Arnold J. Stromberg, Peter T. Nelson Nov 2008

Focus On Rna Isolation: Obtaining Rna For Microrna (Mirna) Expression Profiling Analyses Of Neural Tissue, Wang-Xia Wang, Bernard R. Wilfred, Donald A. Baldwin, R. Benjamin Isett, Na Ren, Arnold J. Stromberg, Peter T. Nelson

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are present in all known plant and animal tissues and appear to be somewhat concentrated in the mammalian nervous system. Many different miRNA expression profiling platforms have been described. However, relatively little research has been published to establish the importance of 'upstream' variables in RNA isolation for neural miRNA expression profiling. We tested whether apparent changes in miRNA expression profiles may be associated with tissue processing, RNA isolation techniques, or different cell types in the sample. RNA isolation was performed on a single brain sample using eight different RNA isolation methods, and results were correlated using a conventional …

A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell Nov 2008

A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell

College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Jargon is a barrier to effective patient-physician communication, especially when health literacy is low or the topic is complicated. Jargon is addressed by medical schools and residency programs, but reducing jargon usage by the many physicians already in practice may require the population-scale methods used in Quality Improvement.

Objective

To assess the amount of jargon used and explained during discussions about prostate or breast cancer screening. Effective communication is recommended before screening for prostate or breast cancer because of the large number of false-positive results and the possible complications from evaluation or treatment.

Participants

Primary care internal medicine residents. …

An Argument For A Return To Plessy V. Ferguson: Why Illinois Should Reconsider The Doctrine Of "Separate But Equal" Public Schools, Rick Guzman Nov 2008

An Argument For A Return To Plessy V. Ferguson: Why Illinois Should Reconsider The Doctrine Of "Separate But Equal" Public Schools, Rick Guzman

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Comment analyzes the steady erosion of the 1954 landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. Specifically, it argues that the millions of poor and overwhelmingly minority school children who are attending 99% single-race schools might actually have access to better teachers and more adequate educational funding under the long-abandoned principle that "separate" schools must be "equal," by some measure, than such students fare under today's watered down interpretation of the Brown case. Illinois, which ranks dead last in school-funding equality as measured by disparity in per pupil expenditures, is examined in depth. The Comment provides extensive statistical analysis and …

Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl Nov 2008

Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure were amended effective December 1, 2006 to address concerns about discovery of electronically stored information. One of those amendments, Rule 37(e), created a safe harbor for parties who destroy relevant information as a result of the good faith, routine operation of their electronic storage systems. The rule recognizes the enhanced difficulty of preserving relevant information in the electronic context due to the automatic operation of electronic storage systems and the necessary deletion and modification of such systems' contents from time to time due to storage constraints and other technological limitations. The rule's good-faith requirement …

The Impact Of Hiring Practices On The Employment Of Urban Teachers In Secondary Shortage Areas, Narlene Ragans Nov 2008

The Impact Of Hiring Practices On The Employment Of Urban Teachers In Secondary Shortage Areas, Narlene Ragans

Education Doctoral

This study examined the teacher hiring process as one possible cause of urban districts' difficulty to recruit and hire highly qualified teachers. The study examines how new teachers experience the hiring process, reviews the information they receive from the hiring process, and captures teachers' perspectives of how the hiring process assisted them to adjust to their new positions. The following research question guided the study: What are the perceptions ofthe hiring procedures in one Western New York school district among newly hired teachers in secondary subject areas experiencing teacher shortages? The study is a quantitative research project based on findings …

The Morality Of Immigration Policy, Peter H. Schuck Nov 2008

The Morality Of Immigration Policy, Peter H. Schuck

San Diego Law Review

In Part I, I discuss five kinds of deontological arguments that a moralist might advance in debating the ideal nature of our immigration policy. In Part II, I take a more instrumentalist-consequentialist approach to immigration policy analysis. Before doing so, however, I briefly note some of the familiar methodological and cognitive limitations of applying this approach to complex public policy issues of this kind, limitations that remind us of the irreducible importance of normative considerations and judgments to such policy assessments. I then go on to identify the three main sets of empirical controversies that figure most prominently in immigration …

Brain Drain, Fernando R. Teson Nov 2008

Brain Drain, Fernando R. Teson

San Diego Law Review

This Article argues against this conventional view. Most of the time there is nothing unfair about the brain drain, whether one considers it from the standpoint of the emigrant, the source country, or the host country. Critics of the brain drain make problematic empirical and philosophical claims. The empirical assumption of the critics, that the brain drain invariably hurts developing countries, is controversial. While a number of authorities endorse the conventional view that the brain drain hurts source countries, a contrarian literature suggests that the brain drain may help those left behind - that there is, in fact, a brain …

Immigration, Political Community, And Cosmopolitanism, Thomas Christiano Nov 2008

Immigration, Political Community, And Cosmopolitanism, Thomas Christiano

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, I want to suggest one important way to take the above issues seriously that is consistent with a thoroughgoing cosmopolitanism. The idea develops a consideration that has been discussed, but not sufficiently explored, by some cosmopolitans. It starts from the observation that one can be a moral cosmopolitan without being a political cosmopolitan in the sense of advocating for a global political community in the near-term future. To be sure, given the role of the political community in establishing justice among persons, it seems clear that in the long term, moral cosmopolitans must hope for a global …

Immigration And Political Equality, Michael Blake Nov 2008

Immigration And Political Equality, Michael Blake

San Diego Law Review

The act of immigration alters several forms of human relationship simultaneously. It represents a change in physical location and so alters the relationship between persons represented by geographic concepts such as territory and property. In immigrating, immigrants acquire a new place in the world that they may understand, in some sense of the word, as their own. Immigration also alters a political relationship insofar as the immigrant acquires a new political status in virtue of that new home in the world. The immigrant ought to be understood as creating through the act of immigration a new set of relationships to …

The Torturing Debate On Torture, Mohammed Saif-Alden Wattad Nov 2008

The Torturing Debate On Torture, Mohammed Saif-Alden Wattad

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The War on Terrorism generated a correlation between terrorism and torture. This article analyzes the basic premises of the torture debate by addressing the following issues: (1) defining torture; (2) punishing torturers; (3) justifying, excusing, or pardoning torturers; and (4) conducting legal interrogation. The article criticizes existing law on the torture debate for its lack of conceptuality and coherency, thus arguing that the articulation of the existing definition of torture has been politically motivated. The article offers a conceptual understanding of the torture phenomenon as premised on five conceptual distinctions: (1) superior versus inferior, (2) active versus passive, (3) theatricality …
