Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The beachrock formation on the Arıburnu coast situated in the Gelibolu Peninsula has been studied by field observation, thin-section interpretation, physicochemical analyses including ICP-AES and SEM/EDS, and OSL dating. These analyses reveal the presence of different amounts of major (Si, Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Al and Na) and trace elements within the beachrock cement with Si (36.2%) and Ca (32.68%) dominating the overall composition. Beachrocks composed of highly-fractured and friable beds reach a total thickness of 80 cm extending from +60 cm at the uppermost level down to -1 m at their most seaward extent and grade from conglomerate to …

Is Pain Really God’S Megaphone? Responding To C.S. Lewis, Lisa Moate Jan 2008

Is Pain Really God’S Megaphone? Responding To C.S. Lewis, Lisa Moate

Theses

In this study I will defend C.S. Lewis’ claim that people can be morally improved through experiences of pain and suffering and that, as such, attempts to avoid painful experiences are inappropriate. In explaining the context within which Lewis treats pain, a discussion of the nature of pain itself is not necessary since the importance of Lewis’ work lies in its practical application and the role it has in people’s lives; that is, in contributing towards our moral growth. The nature of pain is examined insofar as clarifying the idea it that can only be understood individually due to the …

Factors Influencing Potato Production In North Dakota, Zoe Taryn Margaux Roberson Zetina Jan 2008

Factors Influencing Potato Production In North Dakota, Zoe Taryn Margaux Roberson Zetina

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Spatial shifts and structural changes continue to occur in the United States agricultural industry. Researchers have documented that the potato industry has changed in response to demands of consumers, expectations of producers and improvements in research and development. The aim of this study was to provide empirical evidence that both institutional and infrastructural factors are important to potato production in North Dakota. Using secondary county-level potato production data for North Dakota, an empirical model was designed to estimate the direction and impact of growers' expectations of prices, yields and costs on their decision to produce potatoes. The results confirmed that …

Nu Skin Enterprises: Market Research Project, Jay An, Brian Carroll, Tim Headrick, Abby Sheffield Jan 2008

Nu Skin Enterprises: Market Research Project, Jay An, Brian Carroll, Tim Headrick, Abby Sheffield

Student Works

Nu Skin's vision is to raise the percentage of customers that order online from 17 percent to 40 percent by the end of 2008. With this ambitious goal in mind, the BYU team tailored its research to help them move forward. The central question is, how can Nu Skin increase its conversion rate of those who visit nuskinusa.com to those who actually make purchases through the site. We hope to answer the following peripheral questions as well: (1.) Why do people order by phone rather than online, and (2.) How can Nu Skin improve its site to increase the percentage …

Report For Academic Vice President, Jorge Mazal, Billy De Groot, Mark Roper, Autume Pease

Student Works

This report details our findings for the Office of the Academic Vice President. Our purpose was to help our client decide whether or not to create a system which combines Student Rating System, Blackboard, Testing Center, iClickers, Grade book on Blackboard and Testing Center, etc. We met with Debra Biser to discover the needs of this department. From the initial interview, we discovered our mission was three fold: (1) to discover what programs should be included, (2) to decide what the name should be, and (3) to determine if the students would resist the change. In order to obtain the …

Numerical Study Of Energy Utilization In Nozzle/Plume Flow-Fields Of High-Speed Air-Breathing Vehicles, Althea Grace Wilson Jan 2008

Numerical Study Of Energy Utilization In Nozzle/Plume Flow-Fields Of High-Speed Air-Breathing Vehicles, Althea Grace Wilson

Masters Theses

"Focused local energy deposition in both internal and external flow-fields associated with high-speed aerospace vehicles can provide many system level benefits. This study specifically analyzes the effects of targeted (local) energization of the flow in the nozzle and afterbody flow-field regions of a hypersonic lifting body configuration. Benefits are shown to include the generation of a favorable vehicle pitching moment (nose-down) increment associated with such energy deposition and a reduced local and overall thermal load in both combustor and nozzle for all cases examined. These results have been obtained by modeling the nozzle/afterbody region of a simple generic 2-D wave-rider/lifting …

School Counselors' Perceptions Of The Needs Of Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Sarah Wakefield Jan 2008

School Counselors' Perceptions Of The Needs Of Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Sarah Wakefield

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Children of incarcerated parents are a population that have specialized needs. While previous research has explored the effects of parental incarceration on children and their needs, the current study evaluated schools' awareness of such effects and the resources they have to meet those needs. Because the majority of children attend school, schools are an appropriate setting for such interventions and services. The current study showed that school counselors are not aware of all of the students affected by parental incarceration, they need additional information concerning specific issues and needs associated with parental incarceration, and they believe their schools lack the …

Late Pleistocene Cryogenic Calcite Spherolites From The Malachitdom Cave (Ne Rhenish Slate Mountains, Germany): Origin, Unusual Internal Structure And Stable C-O Isotope Composition, Detlev Konrad Richter, Dana Felicitas Christine Riechelmann Jan 2008

Late Pleistocene Cryogenic Calcite Spherolites From The Malachitdom Cave (Ne Rhenish Slate Mountains, Germany): Origin, Unusual Internal Structure And Stable C-O Isotope Composition, Detlev Konrad Richter, Dana Felicitas Christine Riechelmann

International Journal of Speleology

Cryogenic calcites yielded U-series ages in the range from 15.61±0.20 ka to 14.48±0.12 ka, which is the youngest age obtained so far for this type of cryogenic cave carbonates in Europe. Most of these particles of the Malachitdom Cave (NE Brilon, Sauerland, North Rhine-Westphalia) are complex spherolites usually smaller than 1 cm. They show δ13C-values between –1 and –5 ‰ VPDB and δ18O-values ranging from –7 to –16 ‰ VPDB, the δ13C-values increase and the δ18O-values decrease from centre to border. The complex spherolites are interpreted to be formed in slowly freezing …

Palaeoclimate Research In Villars Cave (Dordogne, Sw-France), Dominique Genty Jan 2008

Palaeoclimate Research In Villars Cave (Dordogne, Sw-France), Dominique Genty

International Journal of Speleology

Villars Cave is a typical shallow cave from South-West France (45.44°N; 0.78°E; 175 m asl) that has provided several speleothem palaeoclimatic records such as the millennial scale variability of the Last Glacial period and the Last Deglaciation. Monitoring the Villars cave environment over a 13-year period has helped in the understanding of the stable isotopic speleothem content and in the hydrology. For example, it was demonstrated that most of the calcite CaCO3 carbon comes from the soil CO2, which explains the sensitivity of the δ13C to any vegetation and climatic changes. Drip rate monitoring, carried …

A Separation Criterion And Non-Intrusive Thickness Measurement Technique For Shear-Driven Films, Mark A. Friedrich Jan 2008

A Separation Criterion And Non-Intrusive Thickness Measurement Technique For Shear-Driven Films, Mark A. Friedrich

Masters Theses

"The behavior of a shear-driven thin liquid film at a sharp expanding corner is of interest in many engineering applications. However, details of the interaction between inertial, surface tension, and gravitational forces at the corner that result in partial or complete separation of the film from the surface are not clear. The focus of this study was to develop a criterion to predict the onset of shear-driven film separation from the surface at an expanding corner as well as to develop a film thickness measurement technique that could be used to obtain an average film thickness for input into the …

Delegating To International Courts: Self-Binding Vs. Other-Binding Delegation, Karen J. Alter Jan 2008

Delegating To International Courts: Self-Binding Vs. Other-Binding Delegation, Karen J. Alter

Law and Contemporary Problems

Alter highlights the diverse nature of international delegations to courts. She argues that the roles and tasks delegated to international courts increasingly mimic in form and content the broad variety of tasks delegated to courts in liberal democracies, but that delegating these tasks to international courts is fundamentally different than delegating them to domestic courts because of the implications for national sovereignty. Whereas international courts were initially established to be dispute-resolution bodies, they now also perform administrative review, enforcement, and even constitutional review. Alter explains how each of these judicial roles binds other actors, binds states, or both.

International Delegation And State Sovereignty, Oona A. Hathaway Jan 2008

International Delegation And State Sovereignty, Oona A. Hathaway

Law and Contemporary Problems

Hathaway rebuts the claim that state sovereignty almost always suffers when states delegate authority to international institutions. Critics of delegation err, she contends, by overemphasizing the costs but losing sight of some of the substantial benefits of cooperation. She considers the challenge to sovereignty posed by international delegation by focusing on recent debates over the influence of international legal commitments on domestic governance.

Monitoring Compliance With Unratified Treaties: The Ilo Experience, Laurence R. Helfer Jan 2008

Monitoring Compliance With Unratified Treaties: The Ilo Experience, Laurence R. Helfer

Law and Contemporary Problems

Helfer challenges the conventional wisdom that the delegation of authority to the International Labor Organization (ILO) involves only modest sovereignty costs. Heifer explains that the ILO has increasingly exercised the authority to monitor compliance with unratified labor treaties and recommendations, and that the exercise of this authority has significant effects. He further notes that this type of monitoring authority is not confined to the ILO, but in fact exists in several other international institutions and issue areas. The case of the ILO therefore suggests that some important delegations arise and thrive outside of the formal channels of authority. This makes …

Land Tenure And Rental In Western Sudan, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 2008

Land Tenure And Rental In Western Sudan, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

This paper reports on aspects of land tenure in western Sudan, especially the nature of tenure insecurity and the functioning of the land rental market. The active land rental market accounted for about one-third of cultivated land. Patterns of land rental transactions, and tests of the importance of insecurity in renting land, where the owner may not be able to reclaim land rented out, do not support the presumption that rental markets perform poorly. The role of the sheikh as administrator of village land, and the claims of large landowners to vast tracts, are, however, important political problems that must …
