The Occurrence Of Moral Distress In Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Linda Radzvin Jan 2008

The Occurrence Of Moral Distress In Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Linda Radzvin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Registered nurses are frequently confronted with ethical dilemmas in their nursing practice. As a consequence of their decisions regarding ethical challenges, nurses report experiencing moral distress. This experience is often manifested by such feelings as anger, guilt, sadness, fear, and frustration and has been identified as a contributing factor to burnout and turnover in nursing. A review of the literature has shown that the incidence of moral distress has been examined in various nursing settings. However, to date only one qualitative study has been conducted that examined the occurrence of moral distress in nurse anesthetists related to the delivery of …

How Does Culture Count In Legal Change?: A Review With A Proposal From A Social Movement Perspective, Setsuo Miyazawa Jan 2008

How Does Culture Count In Legal Change?: A Review With A Proposal From A Social Movement Perspective, Setsuo Miyazawa

Faculty Scholarship

We have in this volume four articles on legal change in China and Japan written by four distinguished authors. These articles vary with regard to subject state, specificity of issues, and breadth of analytical scope. They commonly discuss one factor, however: culture. The purpose of this Comment is to examine the way each article uses culture in its explanations of legal change. The Comment concludes with a brief suggestion, from a social movement perspective, on employing culture as an explanatory tool in a non-essentialist way.

The Adaptive Cross Approximation Algorithm Applied To Electromagnetic Scattering By Bodies Of Revolution, Brent D. Rogus Jan 2008

The Adaptive Cross Approximation Algorithm Applied To Electromagnetic Scattering By Bodies Of Revolution, Brent D. Rogus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Finding solutions to Maxwell's Equations is the key to modeling all electromagnetic phenomenon. One approach to solving Maxwell's Equations is to use an integral equation approach. The integral equations can then be solved numerically by approaches like the method of moments or the Nystrom method. These approaches yield a dense system of linear equations. The coefficient matrix must be computed and stored, which requires a great deal of computational resources. The adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm is a method which can be used to efficiently compute and store these matricies. This thesis will apply the ACA to a special class …

Mechanistic And Clinical Studies Of Platelet Rich Plasma: A Simple Clinical Method For Enhancing Bone And Soft Tissue Healing, James L. Rutkowski Jan 2008

Mechanistic And Clinical Studies Of Platelet Rich Plasma: A Simple Clinical Method For Enhancing Bone And Soft Tissue Healing, James L. Rutkowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a methodology of using a patient's own platelets to enhance bone and soft tissue healing following oral surgical procedures. Whole blood is drawn from the patient by conventional phlebotomy techniques and then centrifuged with the formation of a distinct middle layer that contains platelets and white blood cells (WBCs). This layer of platelets and WBCs is then placed into the surgical site to enable faster and more predictable healing. This technique has also found use in general medical surgeries and is gaining in popularity.

Platelets contain growth factors and other cytokines that are beneficial for …

Why Parents Choose Catholic School: A Social Theory Understanding, John M. Schultz Jan 2008

Why Parents Choose Catholic School: A Social Theory Understanding, John M. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Catholic schools in the United States are at a critical juncture. The Catholic bishops speak as if parents choose a Catholic school mainly because of the spiritual mission of the school. But what are the real reasons that parents choose Catholic school for their children? Current research provides no social or religious understanding of the phenomenon of school choice.

Research Questions and hypotheses

As the title indicates, the purpose of this study is to investigate the real reasons that parents choose Catholic school for their children as understood by using a social theory model and as influenced by many forces …

Seizing The Catholic Moment: Kairos And The Rhetoric Of Diocesan Administration, Craig Maier Jan 2008

Seizing The Catholic Moment: Kairos And The Rhetoric Of Diocesan Administration, Craig Maier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What can Roman Catholic diocesan administrations in the United States learn from rhetorical studies in the postmodern moment? This dissertation attempts to help American dioceses to respond to a postmodern moment of increasing secularization, changing human resources, and declining institutional trust. In this moment of challenge and uncertainty, it finds Richard Neuhaus's (1987) metaphor of the Catholic Moment to be particularly powerful for diocesan administration because it finds within the tensions of postmodernity a new sense of possibility that both the Christian and rhetorical traditions have understood through the metaphor of kairos.

The rhetoric of diocesan administration is best understood …

Dole’S Future: A Strategic Analysis, Neil S. Siegel Jan 2008

Dole’S Future: A Strategic Analysis, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

As the U.S. Supreme Court imposes federalism-based limits on congressional power under the Commerce Clause and Section Five of the Fourteenth Amendment, Congress may be tempted to turn to the conditional spending power in order to achieve goals that it may not accomplish directly. In this article, I address whether a danger exists, as some suggest, that such use of the Spending Clause would render the Court more likely to cut back on its scope, narrowing or overruling South Dakota v. Dole, 483 U.S. 203 (1987). Using doctrinal analysis and game theory, I conclude that Congress should proceed with …

Constitutional Possibilities, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2008

Constitutional Possibilities, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

What are our constitutional possibilities? The importance of this question is illustrated by the striking breadth of recent discussions, ranging from the interpretation of the United States Constitution as a guarantee of fundamental economic equality and proposals to restore the lost constitution to arguments for the virtual abandonment of structural provisions of the Constitution of 1789. Such proposals are conventionally understood as placing constitutional options on the table as real options for constitutional change. Normative constitutional theory asks the question whether these options are desirable - whether political actors (citizens, legislators, executives, or judges) should take action to bring about …

The Wto And Biofuels: The Possibility Of Unilateral Sustainability Requirements, Enrique Rene De Vera Jan 2008

The Wto And Biofuels: The Possibility Of Unilateral Sustainability Requirements, Enrique Rene De Vera

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Development introduces the international legal issues raised by increasing trade in biofuels. Section II of the Development surveys the current biofuel landscape, providing statistics on the use and trade of biofuels, and discusses the prospect for increased production and trade in biofuels. Section III discusses the concept of sustainability-particularly in the context of biofuel production-as well as WTO treatment of past efforts to regulate trade based on environmental concerns. In conclusion, Section IV argues that current WTO jurisprudence leaves open the possibility that WTO members may rightfully discriminate against unsustainably produced biofuels.

Technology, Politics, And The New Space Race: The Legality And Desirability Of Bush's National Space Policy Under The Public And Customary International Laws Of Space, Jacob M. Harper Jan 2008

Technology, Politics, And The New Space Race: The Legality And Desirability Of Bush's National Space Policy Under The Public And Customary International Laws Of Space, Jacob M. Harper

Chicago Journal of International Law

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the War on Terror has affected US defense policy in lands as far flung as Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, and Iraq. Recently, President George W. Bush has expanded the scope of the War on Terror into a new area: space. On August 31, 2006, President Bush authorized the new National Space Policy ("NSP06"), an assertion of the US's right to defend itself in outer space. In it, the US reserves the right to "deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to [US] interests." It also declares that "[p]roposed arms control …

Relational Duties, Regulatory Duties, And The Widening Gap Between Individual Health Law And Collective Health Policy, William M. Sage Jan 2008

Relational Duties, Regulatory Duties, And The Widening Gap Between Individual Health Law And Collective Health Policy, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

In response to a prominent editorial by Dr. Jeffrey M. Drazen, Professor Sage explains how a relational approach has impeded health law's ability to effectively govern the American health care system, arguing that health law has traditionally focused on the physician-patient encounter rather than on achieving collective objectives (which he calls regulatory duties). Professor Sage traces health law's relational emphasis to private and public law, professional ethics and bioethics, budgetary and general politics, and health care consumerism. He concludes that four areas of health policy-conflicts of interest in biomedical research, managed care and pay-for-performance, health care transparency and education, and …

Productivity Growth In The U.S. Trucking Industry, Steven Condon Jan 2008

Productivity Growth In The U.S. Trucking Industry, Steven Condon

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The performance of the trucking industry is very important to the economy given that it moves nearly 70 percent of the nation's freight (Tall et al. 2005). The more efficient and productive trucking fins are, the less the shipping costs are for the trucking firm managers and the end consumers or businesses. Consequently, it has become vital to keep the trucking industry running efficiently and continuing to improve productivity. Productivity change of 115 of the largest firms in the United States was determined for the years 1999 and 2003. The Malmquist Productivity Index was decomposed into technical efficiency change and …

Impact Of Climate Change And Weather Variability On North Dakota Agriculture, Chol Permina Mayom Jan 2008

Impact Of Climate Change And Weather Variability On North Dakota Agriculture, Chol Permina Mayom

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This study used county-level yields and panel data (1950-2006) to explain the Impact of climate change and weather variability on North Dakota agriculture by estimating the effect of variation in temperature and precipitation on the yields of four major crops: com, durum, soybeans and wheat. In addition to yields, the study examined Impacts of climate change on crop gross revenues per acre for all 53 counties in North Dakota. An econometric model was developed to infer statistical relationships between weather variability and crop yields. Fixed and random effects models were employed to estimate the impacts of climate variables (temperature and …

Discriminative-Stimulus And Time-Course Effects Of Kava-Kava (Piper Methysticum) In Rats, Natalie R. Bruner Jan 2008

Discriminative-Stimulus And Time-Course Effects Of Kava-Kava (Piper Methysticum) In Rats, Natalie R. Bruner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Kava-kava is a widely available and used herbal medicine that is not regulated in many countries, including the United States. There are many questions concerning kava-kava's stimulus properties, potential for therapeutic use, and potential for abuse. Although there is evidence that kava may possess some anxiolytic properties, the supplement's mechanism of action and the extent to which it may serve as an alternative to pharmaceutical anxiolytics are unknown. To date, there is no research examining whether kava shares discriminative-stimulus properties with a standard pharmaceutical anxiolytic such as chlordiazepoxide (CDP). The current study compared different doses of kava in two groups …

Aerodynamic Benefits Of Near-Surface-Actuated Circulation Control Blowing Slots For Rotorcraft Use, Gerald M. Angle Ii Jan 2008

Aerodynamic Benefits Of Near-Surface-Actuated Circulation Control Blowing Slots For Rotorcraft Use, Gerald M. Angle Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the most maintenance intensive components of all present-day helicopters is the swash-plate, and its associated control linkages. This mechanism is also the major contributing factor to fatal accidents associated with helicopter flight. However, the swash-plate is an essential component in providing controlled flight, by transmitting the pilot's control-inputs to the main rotor. Another side-effect of using the swash-plate is that it increases the diameter of the main rotor shaft assembly, slightly increasing the total drag of the aircraft. Thus, there are several benefits that could be achieved by removing the swash-plate of the helicopter.;To enable the removal of …

Effects Of Induced Acute Phase Response In Ewes On Early Embryo Survival, Tina Lynn Dow Jan 2008

Effects Of Induced Acute Phase Response In Ewes On Early Embryo Survival, Tina Lynn Dow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Early pregnant ewes, 5/6 day post coitus (dpc) were used as a model to study early embryonic loss via gram-positive bacterial infections, such as mastitis. Ewes 5/6 dpc were injected with a gram-positive bacteria cell wall component, peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS), to induce an innate immune system acute phase response (APR). The induction of the APR and its reactant molecules, such as cytokines and acute phase proteins (APP), were initiated to study their effects on embryonic loss. Twenty Suffolk ewes were synchronized for estrus and bred by fertile rams. At 4 dpc ewes were anesthetized and catheters were surgically placed in the …

Application Of Machine Vision In Uavs For Autonomous Target Tracking, Joshua Patrick Effland Jan 2008

Application Of Machine Vision In Uavs For Autonomous Target Tracking, Joshua Patrick Effland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research presents experimental results for the application of Machine Vision (MV) techniques to address the problem of target detection and tracking. The main objective is the design of a prototype "UAV" surveillance environment to emulate real-life conditions. The model environment for this experiment consists of a target simulated by a small electric train system, located at "ground" level, and a MV camera mounted on a motion-based apparatus located directly above the model setup. This system is meant to be a non-flying mockup of an aerial robot retrofitted with a MV sensor. Therefore, the final design is a two degree-of-freedom …

Estimate At Completion For Construction Projects, Yi Fang Jan 2008

Estimate At Completion For Construction Projects, Yi Fang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Construction projects are complex and risky because there are so many variables that may affect their profitability especially in terms of their cost and schedule. The information provided by the measurement of progress, the expended dollars and the forecasting of the outcome of a construction project will provide valuable information as to how to proceed, the impacts, corrective action required, and the trade-offs necessary to maximize profits and minimize risk. This study focused on using different indicators to measure the schedule performance and cost performance of construction projects, and to predict final cost and duration by the moving average and …
