Clinical Usefulness Of The Oppositional Defiant Disorder Rating Scale, Jessica L. Hackenberg Jan 2008

Clinical Usefulness Of The Oppositional Defiant Disorder Rating Scale, Jessica L. Hackenberg

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of the Oppositional Defiant Disorder Rating Scale (ODDRS) in a clinic-referred population. In addition, the diagnostic benefit of using a rating scale specific to Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), in addition to a broad range behavior scale, was investigated. Parents and teachers of 121 clinic-referred children provided ratings on the ODDRS. Modest agreement was found between parent and teacher ratings on some items. However, the average correlation between parent and teacher ratings was minimal ( r = .16). Children diagnosed with ODD through structured parent interviews were found to have elevated …

Comparing The Health Belief Model And Theory Of Planned Behavior In Predicting Intent To Vaccinate Against The Human Papillomavirus In College Women, Juli A. Buchanan Jan 2008

Comparing The Health Belief Model And Theory Of Planned Behavior In Predicting Intent To Vaccinate Against The Human Papillomavirus In College Women, Juli A. Buchanan

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a group of viruses that currently infect approximately 25 million American women, is a serious health threat that has been directly linked to cervical cancer, as well as to other gynecological, sex organ, and oropharyngeal cancers (Syrjanen, 2007). In 2006, the FDA approved a controversial vaccine that would prevent two of the strains most often linked to HPV-related cancers, but the vaccine must be administered to pre-sexual girls between the ages of 9 and 12 in order to be most effective. Little attention has been focused on college-age women who are also at risk for dangerous HPV …

Experiences And Coping Among Female Caseworkers At Women's Shelters: A Qualitative Study, H. Norene Wu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In-depth individual interviews were conducted with 12 peer-referred participants to gain information on work experiences and coping resources utilized by caseworkers in battered women's shelters. Caseworkers' work experiences, support systems, and coping strategies are explored. A conceptual framework for experiences and coping among shelter caseworkers emerged consisting of work motivation, experiences, and coping. The themes that structure this framework are discussed in detail. Unique findings include the benefits of gradual exposure to IPV work, issues related to addressing spirituality in service provision, a symptom-development timeframe, and a wider range of shelter experiences and coping strategies. Implications for caseworkers, shelter administrators, …

Human Performance Analysis Of Controller -Pilot Data Link Communications, Randal J. Demik Jan 2008

Human Performance Analysis Of Controller -Pilot Data Link Communications, Randal J. Demik

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher examined how the introduction and application of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) technology will affect human performance in the single-pilot general aviation work environment. Unlike conventional voice-based air traffic control (ATC) communications technology, the CPDLC system will allow pilots and controllers to exchange text-based messages via specifically designated data links. Instrument-rated pilots ( N = 30) were tested on both a series of CPDLC text command tasks and a series of conventional voice command tasks in a simulated flight environment. Measures of performance were response time and number of errors made in pilot recall/execution across the command condition …

Mediation Analyses Of Culture, Alexithymia, Masculine Ideology, And Help-Seeking, Ying-Ying Yeh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was an examination of whether alexithymia and masculine ideology mediate separately the relationship between culture and help-seeking. To investigate this mediation, I analyzed pre-collected data gathered from a much bigger research project. One hundred and fifty Taiwanese college students and another 150 American college students were recruited for the prior study. Participants were given a demographic questionnaire, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Male Role Norms Inventory, and Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help-Revised to examine their endorsement of alexithymia, masculine ideology, and attitudes toward help-seeking. Mediation analyses were used to examine the mediation effect of alexithymia and masculine ideology on …

Learning Styles Of Myers-Briggs Type Indicators, Juanita Jane Cohen Jan 2008

Learning Styles Of Myers-Briggs Type Indicators, Juanita Jane Cohen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study illustrated that personality type influences learning style. The study compared the personalities expressed in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to Felder and Silverman's (1988) Index of Learning Styles (ILS). Phase one was a combined MBTI and ILS assessment that was administered to 105 participants. To further define learning style, phase two was a follow-up questionnaire administered to 37 participants and was based on Goley's (1982) Learning Pattern (LP) assessment. The research did indicate a correlation between specific dichotomies of MBTI, ILS, and LP. The Extravert and Introvert dichotomy in MBTI appeared to correlate with the Active and Reflective …

Reaction Time Performance Among Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Reading Disorder, Nathan M. Gay

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study compared reaction time performance on a reading task for children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a Reading Disability (RD), and children without a diagnosis of ADHD or RD. It was hypothesized that children in the ADHD and RD groups would respond with different patterns of reaction time, providing information that may assist in differentiating between these two diagnostic groups. Participants included 70 children: 31 diagnosed with ADHD, 12 that met criteria for RD, and 27 children in a comparison group. Children with RD were expected to respond slower than children in the ADHD and comparison groups on …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examines the clinical utility of eye movement tracking in the differential diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Inattentive Type, ADHD Combined Type, and Reading Disability (RD). Conservative estimates of the overlap between ADHD and RD range from 10-45%. It is anticipated that eye movement tracking will provide a better understanding of the underlying deficits that potentially contribute to reading difficulties among children with ADHD and RD. Participants included 79 children: 7 diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive Type, 24 diagnosed with ADHD Combined Type, 10 that met criteria for RD, and 38 Control children. Subjects diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive …

A Computational Investigation Of Graph Reconstruction, David Rivshin Jan 2008

A Computational Investigation Of Graph Reconstruction, David Rivshin

Theses

First proposed in 1941 by Kelly and Ulam, the Graph Reconstruction Conjecture has been called the major open problem in the field of Graph Theory. While the Graph Reconstruction Conjecture is still unproven it has spawned a number of related questions. In the classical vertex graph reconstruction number problem a vertex is deleted in every possible way from a graph G, and then it can be asked how many (both minimum and maximum values) of these subgraphs are required to uniquely reconstruct G (up to isomorphism). This problem can then be extended to k-vertex deletion (for 1 ≤ k ≤ …

Cognitive Dimensions Usability Assessment Of Textual And Visual Vhdl Environments, George Kontos Jan 2008

Cognitive Dimensions Usability Assessment Of Textual And Visual Vhdl Environments, George Kontos

Theses

Visual programming languages promise to make programming easier with simpler graphical methods, broadening access to computing by lessening the need for would-be users to become proficient with textual programming languages, with their somewhat arcane grammars and methods removed from the problem space of the user. However, after more than forty years of research in the field, visual methods remain in the margins of use and programming remains the bailiwick of people devoted to the endeavor. VPL designers need to understand the mechanisms of usability that pertain to complex systems like programming language environments. Effective research tools for studying usability, and …

English Language & Third Generation Programming Language Pedagogical Practice Analysis, Vincent Falbo Jan 2008

English Language & Third Generation Programming Language Pedagogical Practice Analysis, Vincent Falbo

Theses

In an effort to provide better computer programming instruction to more students at an introductory level, pedagogical methods could be improved using a paradigm of instruction based on the same strategies used to teach students spoken languages. Although many different methodologies of instruction have been explored in the past, this document identifies relationships between spoken languages and computer languages that encourage the exploration of the best practices of teaching English Language Arts so that they could be applied to computer programming instruction. Those with backgrounds in mathematics and science initially completed programming tasks. Much literature about the problem solving aspects …
