Differential Gene Expression Associated With Postnatal Equine Articular Cartilage Maturation, Michael J. Mienaltowski, Liping Huang, Arnold J. Stromberg, James N. Macleod
Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Articular cartilage undergoes an important maturation process from neonate to adult that is reflected by alterations in matrix protein organization and increased heterogeneity of chondrocyte morphology. In the horse, these changes are influenced by exercise during the first five months of postnatal life. Transcriptional profiling was used to evaluate changes in articular chondrocyte gene expression during postnatal growth and development.
METHODS: Total RNA was isolated from the articular cartilage of neonatal (0-10 days) and adult (4-5 years) horses, subjected to one round of linear RNA amplification, and then applied to a 9,367-element equine-specific cDNA microarray. Comparisons were made with …

Application Of Remote Sensing Methods To Assess The Spatial Extent Of The Seagrass Resource In St. Joseph Sound And Clearwater Harbor, Florida, U.S.A., Cynthia A. Meyer
Application Of Remote Sensing Methods To Assess The Spatial Extent Of The Seagrass Resource In St. Joseph Sound And Clearwater Harbor, Florida, U.S.A., Cynthia A. Meyer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the event of a natural or anthropogenic disturbance, environmental resource managers require a reliable tool to quickly assess the spatial extent of potential damage to the seagrass resource. The temporal availability of the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, 16-20 days, provides a suitable option to detect and assess damage to the seagrass resource. In this study, remote sensing Landsat 5 TM imagery is used to map the spatial extent of the seagrass resource. Various classification techniques are applied to delineate the seagrass beds in Clearwater Harbor and St. Joseph Sound, FL. This study aims to determine the most …
Paleoclimatic Reconstruction And Evaluation Of Sub-Centennial Climate Variability In The Late Holocene Using Records From Massive Corals (New Caledonia), Tree-Rings (New Mexico) And Speleothems (China), Kristine Lee Delong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on how the construction of a paleoclimate time series influences the interpretation in the frequency domain. Three time series are examined: a New Caledonian coral (Amedee Island), a Chinese speleothem (Dongge Cave), and New Mexican trees (El Malpais).
This study presents a monthly resolved coral Sr/Ca time series from New Caledonia that reconstructs sea surface temperature (SST; 1648-1999). The chronology is based on density-band counting, cross-correlating Sr/Ca, and ²³°Th dating. The intracolony coral Sr/Ca variations are coherent on interannual to centennial time scales and are reproducible for >300 years. The SST reconstruction reveals estimated cooling trend (~0.4°C) …
Characterizing The In-Vitro Morphology And Growth Kinetics Of Intermediate Amyloid Aggregates, Shannon E. Hill
Characterizing The In-Vitro Morphology And Growth Kinetics Of Intermediate Amyloid Aggregates, Shannon E. Hill
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The mechanisms linking deposits of insoluble fibrils of amyloid proteins to the debilitating neuronal cell death characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases remain enigmatic. Recent findings suggest that transiently formed intermediate aggregates, and not the prominent neuronal plaques, represent the principal toxic agent. Evaluating the neurotoxicity of intermediate aggregates, however, requires unambiguous characterization of all aggregate structures present, their relative distributions, and how they evolve in time. Hen-egg white lysozyme represents an attractive model for studying intermediate aggregate formation since it is an extensively characterized globular protein, and its human variants can lead to systemic amyloidosis.
Combining in-situ dynamic light scattering (DLS) …

The 11-year solar cycle is a dominant source of natural variability in the upper atmosphere, and its effect on atomic hydrogen distributions and emissions must be understood to investigate possible signs of longer-term climatic trends in this region. We present midlatitude geocoronal hydrogen Balmer α observations from solar cycle 23 (1997–2006) and three solar minimum periods, 1985, 1997, and 2006. The 1997 through 2006 observations were taken with the Wisconsin H-αMapper Fabry-Perot (WHAM), a ground-based CCD-annular summing instrument that began observations at the Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona in 1997. The 1985 observations were made with a similarly …

Interview With Byron Chong, Byron Chong, California State University, Monterey Bay
Chinatown Renewal Project
Dr. Byron Chong describes his life as a Chinese American growing up in Berkeley and Salinas California in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The son of two doctors, his father, an ear nose and throat specialist, and his mother an ophthalmologist, Byron’s “double dose of intelligence” and nurturing environment propelled him to the top of his class throughout his school years; through Salinas High School, the University of California at Berkeley, and UCSF medical school. Dr. Chong begins by discussing his family history, and focuses on certain incidents of discrimination that echoes the greater state of race relations at the …

Output Feedback Nn Control For Two Classes Of Discrete-Time Systems With Unknown Control Directions In A Unified Approach, C Yang, Ss Ge, C Xiang, Ty Chai, Th Lee
Output Feedback Nn Control For Two Classes Of Discrete-Time Systems With Unknown Control Directions In A Unified Approach, C Yang, Ss Ge, C Xiang, Ty Chai, Th Lee
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In this paper, output feedback adaptive neural network (NN) controls are investigated for two classes of nonlinear discrete-time systems with unknown control directions: 1) nonlinear pure-feedback systems and 2) nonlinear autoregressive moving average with exogenous inputs (NARMAX) systems. To overcome the noncausal problem, which has been known to be a major obstacle in the discrete-time control design, both systems are transformed to a predictor for output feedback control design. Implicit function theorem is used to overcome the difficulty of the nonaffine appearance of the control input. The problem of lacking a priori knowledge on the control directions is solved by …

Self-Reported And Observed Cultural Competence And Therapeutic Alliance In Family Therapy, Carla C. Mayorga
Self-Reported And Observed Cultural Competence And Therapeutic Alliance In Family Therapy, Carla C. Mayorga
Open Access Dissertations
Because of its political and philosophical launching ground (Arredondo & Perez, 2006), cultural competence did not begin as an empirical research program, and as a result, there remains disagreement about how to define and measure cultural competence. Although the application of cultural competence remains unclear to some psychologists (Fuertes et al., 2006), it is now common knowledge that the therapeutic alliance is a statistically and clinically significant contributor to effective therapy. This pilot study merges two prominent bodies of literature, cultural competence and therapeutic alliance, with the underlying assumption that a culturally competent counselor will be able to provide effective …
