Altruistic Relationships For Optimizing Task Fulfillment In Robot Communities, Christopher M. Clark, Ryan Morton, George A. Bekey Nov 2008

Altruistic Relationships For Optimizing Task Fulfillment In Robot Communities, Christopher M. Clark, Ryan Morton, George A. Bekey

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper introduces the concept of a multi-robot community in which multiple robots must fulfill their individual tasks while operating in a shared environment. Unlike typical multi-robot systems in which global cost functions are minimized while accomplishing a set of global tasks, the robots in this work have individual tasks to accomplish and individual cost functions to optimize (e.g. path length or number of objects to gather).

A strategy is presented in which a robot may choose to aid in the completion of another robot’s task. This type of “altruistic” action leads to evolving altruistic relationships between robots, and can …

Evaluating Online Health Information: Beyond Readability Formulas, Gondy Leroy, Stephen Helmreich, James Cowie, Trudi Miller '08, Wei Zheng '08

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Although understanding health information is important, the texts provided are often difficult to understand. There are formulas to measure readability levels, but there is little understanding of how linguistic structures contribute to these difficulties. We are developing a toolkit of linguistic metrics that are validated with representative users and can be measured automatically. In this study, we provide an overview of our corpus and how readability differs by topic and source. We compare two documents for three groups of linguistic metrics. We report on a user study evaluating one of the differentiating metrics: the percentage of function words in a …

Communicating For Influence: Christian Proclamation From The Margins, Brian A. Ross Nov 2008

Communicating For Influence: Christian Proclamation From The Margins, Brian A. Ross

Doctor of Ministry

It is my opinion that North American Christianity needs to re-consider how it communicates to young adults about following after the person of Jesus Christ. The Church should seek to understand the present cultural milieu and the implications of influencing from below. Established Christianity formerly held a position of prestige and relative power. Due to cultural and epistemological shifts this is no longer the situation. The message of Christ is still relevant in the new millennium, but the standard approaches to communicating and thus influencing others in this new world are at times no longer relevant. Much of organized Christianity …

Examining The Effects Of Linguistic Accommodations On The Colorado Student Assessment Program—Mathematics, Marisol Enriquez Nov 2008

Examining The Effects Of Linguistic Accommodations On The Colorado Student Assessment Program—Mathematics, Marisol Enriquez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act changed assessment for English Language Learners (ELLs). Under the law, states must validly assess ELLs' English Language Proficiency (ELP) and content knowledge. The law shed light on the achievement of ELLs while also creating challenges for states in validating state assessment and accountability systems. Test accommodations are used for ELLs to reduce threats to test score validity and measure academic achievement as accurately and fairly as possible. Since ELLs are working towards proficiency in English, they face linguistic and socio-cultural barriers under the confines of large scale assessment. A limited body of research …

Digital Learning: An Australian Research Agenda, Gerald K. White

Digital learning research

The purpose of this paper is to provide some suggestions for consideration of directions for Australian educational research about ICT in education, more recently being called digital learning. A number of agencies in Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA have already embarked on developing research agendas and undertaking research into the use of digital learning. This report highlights some of the significant areas in which research has been undertaken and isolates those areas where there may be a need for further research or where there are gaps in the research agenda for Australia. This paper is …

Mentoring Dialogues: An Investigation Of The Dialectical Tensions And Management Strategies In Mentoring Relationships, Paul J. Kosempel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past 30 years, mentoring has gained perhaps the largest recognition of any phenomenon related to career success. Much of the current research that has explored mentoring relationships has been conducted in fields other than communication studies, although better communication is often the recommended solution to improve mentoring. The majority of research has focused on the outcomes of mentoring relationships, rather than the process of mentoring relationships. Mentoring has also not been studied through a relational dialectics perspective. This study explored the communication dynamics within mentoring relationships through a relational dialectics theoretical lens. The study utilized multiple methods including …

The Teaching Of Swimming Based On A Model Derived From The Causes Of Drowning, Robert Keig Stallman, Malfrid Junge, Turid Blixt Nov 2008

The Teaching Of Swimming Based On A Model Derived From The Causes Of Drowning, Robert Keig Stallman, Malfrid Junge, Turid Blixt

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper proposes that the teaching of beginner swimming should be organized according to the causes of drowning. We surveyed drowning reports, interviewed drowning survivors, and observed simulated drowning victims to determine common characteristics associated with drowning. We also reviewed 25 swimming instructional programs offered by well-recognized national programs from 18 separate countries and identified 8 common beginning swimming skills. These skills could be closely connected with the causes of drowning. We proposed a definition for being able to swim that should be given common international acceptance so that learning to swim can actually provide skills needed for preventing drowning.

Jointed Goatgrass Management With Imazamox-Resistant Cultivars In A Winter Wheat–Fallow Rotation, Andrew R. Kniss, Drew J. Lyon, Stephen D. Miller Nov 2008

Jointed Goatgrass Management With Imazamox-Resistant Cultivars In A Winter Wheat–Fallow Rotation, Andrew R. Kniss, Drew J. Lyon, Stephen D. Miller

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host) is an economically important weed in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–fallow production regions of the United States. Few options exist for management of jointed goatgrass in winter wheat due to the close genetic relationship between the two species. This research evaluated use of imazamox herbicide (2-[(RS)-4-isopropyl-4- methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl]-5-methoxymethylnicotinic acid) in an imazamox-resistant (IR) winter wheat–fallow rotation over 6 yr when grown continuously or in rotation with a conventional winter wheat cultivar. The objectives of this study were to compare use patterns of IR technology in winter wheat with respect to jointed goatgrass density and …

We present a detailed study of the prompt and afterglow emission from Swift GRB 061126 using BAT, XRT, UVOT data and multicolor optical imaging from 10 ground-based telescopes. GRB 061126 was a long burst (T90 ¼191 s) with four overlapping peaks in its -ray light curve. The X-ray afterglow, observed from 26 minutes to 20 days after the burst, shows a simple power-law decay with X ¼1:290 Æ0:008. Optical observations presented here cover the time range from 258 s (Faulkes Telescope North) to 15 days (Gemini North) after the burst; the decay rate of the optical afterglow shows a steep-to-shallow …

Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff Nov 2008

Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Little is known about predictors of academic success among two-year community college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictors of stress, adult attachment, and their interaction on the outcome variables of grade-point average and course completion among 160 two-year community college participants in a small Midwestern community college. Previous research had found relationships among these variables among four-year college students. Thus, it is important to examine these variables as predictors of academic success among community college students. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and three surveys which included scales with established reliability and validity: the Inventory of …

Induction Of Plant Defense Gene Expression By Plant Activators And Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato In Greenhouse-Grown Tomatoes, Maryann Herman, J. K. Davidson, C. D. Smart Nov 2008

Induction Of Plant Defense Gene Expression By Plant Activators And Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato In Greenhouse-Grown Tomatoes, Maryann Herman, J. K. Davidson, C. D. Smart

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Plant activators provide an appealing management option for bacterial diseases of greenhouse-grown tomatoes. Two types of plant activators, one that induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and a second that activates induced systemic resistance (ISR), were evaluated for control of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and effect on plant defense gene activation. Benzothiadiazole (BTH, SAR-inducing compound) effectively reduced bacterial speck incidence and severity, both alone and in combination with the ISR-inducing product. Application of BTH also led to elevated activation of salicylic acid and ethylene-mediated responses, based on real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of marker gene expression levels. In contrast, the ISR-inducing …
