Is Pain Really God’S Megaphone? Responding To C.S. Lewis, Lisa Moate Jan 2008

Is Pain Really God’S Megaphone? Responding To C.S. Lewis, Lisa Moate

Theses

In this study I will defend C.S. Lewis’ claim that people can be morally improved through experiences of pain and suffering and that, as such, attempts to avoid painful experiences are inappropriate. In explaining the context within which Lewis treats pain, a discussion of the nature of pain itself is not necessary since the importance of Lewis’ work lies in its practical application and the role it has in people’s lives; that is, in contributing towards our moral growth. The nature of pain is examined insofar as clarifying the idea it that can only be understood individually due to the …

Avalanche Or Undue Alarm? An Empirical Study Of Subpoenas Received By The News Media, Ronnell Anderson Jones Jan 2008

Avalanche Or Undue Alarm? An Empirical Study Of Subpoenas Received By The News Media, Ronnell Anderson Jones

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

For more than 30 years, proponents and opponents of a federal reporter's shield law have debated the necessity of a privilege for members of the news media and have disagreed sharply about the frequency with which subpoenas are issued to the press. Most recently, in the wake of several high-profile contempt cases, proponents have pointed to a perceived "avalanche" of subpoenas, while opponents have contended that the receipt of subpoenas by reporters remains very rare. This article summarizes the results of an empirical study on the question. The study gathered data on subpoenas received by daily newspapers and network-affiliated television …

Nu Skin Enterprises: Market Research Project, Jay An, Brian Carroll, Tim Headrick, Abby Sheffield Jan 2008

Nu Skin Enterprises: Market Research Project, Jay An, Brian Carroll, Tim Headrick, Abby Sheffield

Student Works

Nu Skin's vision is to raise the percentage of customers that order online from 17 percent to 40 percent by the end of 2008. With this ambitious goal in mind, the BYU team tailored its research to help them move forward. The central question is, how can Nu Skin increase its conversion rate of those who visit nuskinusa.com to those who actually make purchases through the site. We hope to answer the following peripheral questions as well: (1.) Why do people order by phone rather than online, and (2.) How can Nu Skin improve its site to increase the percentage …

Changes In Motor Skill And Fitness Measures Among Children With High And Low Motor Competence: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study, Beth Hands Jan 2008

Changes In Motor Skill And Fitness Measures Among Children With High And Low Motor Competence: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study, Beth Hands

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Children with low motor competence (LMC) are less able to participate fully in many sports and recreational activities typically enjoyed by their well-coordinated peers. Poor fitness outcomes have been reported for these children, although previous studies have not tracked these outcomes over time. In this study, 19 children (8 girls and 11 boys) with LMC aged between 5 and 7 years were matched by age and gender with 19 children with high motor competence (HMC). Six fitness (body compostion and cardiovascular endurance) and motor skill (sprint run, standing broad jump and balance) measures were repeated for each group once a …

New Medical Graduates: Can General Practice Help With Training?, Tom Brett Jan 2008

New Medical Graduates: Can General Practice Help With Training?, Tom Brett

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Medical student numbers in Australia have increased significantly in recent years. A resulting increase in medical graduates is inevitable and desirable.

Western Australian medical graduates will double by 2012 and treble shortly afterward. Insufficient training positions in hospitals will likely require additional training opportunities to be provided by general practices.

This article reviews innovative general practice training schemes for new medical graduates in Australia and overseas. It examines whether Australian general practice can play a role in training the rising numbers of new doctors.

Palaeoclimate Research In Villars Cave (Dordogne, Sw-France), Dominique Genty Jan 2008

Palaeoclimate Research In Villars Cave (Dordogne, Sw-France), Dominique Genty

International Journal of Speleology

Villars Cave is a typical shallow cave from South-West France (45.44°N; 0.78°E; 175 m asl) that has provided several speleothem palaeoclimatic records such as the millennial scale variability of the Last Glacial period and the Last Deglaciation. Monitoring the Villars cave environment over a 13-year period has helped in the understanding of the stable isotopic speleothem content and in the hydrology. For example, it was demonstrated that most of the calcite CaCO3 carbon comes from the soil CO2, which explains the sensitivity of the δ13C to any vegetation and climatic changes. Drip rate monitoring, carried …

Thriving, Coping, Surviving, Hoping: Negotiating The First Year Of Teaching, Debrah Jean Fordice Jan 2008

Thriving, Coping, Surviving, Hoping: Negotiating The First Year Of Teaching, Debrah Jean Fordice

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this qualitative study, I examined how four teachers negotiated their first year of teaching. All four teachers graduated from the same teacher preparation program, and secured general elementary positions in the same school district where they conducted some or all of their clinical coursework. I explored the factors that shaped the practice of these first-year teachers.

Annie, a 23-year-old, single, female marathon runner, with a vision to work with children in an inner-city setting, secured a position as a first grade teacher at a school where 85% of the children lived in poverty. Rachel, 24 years old, newly-married, and …

Deliberative Democratic Practices In Tourism Planning: Towards A Model Of Participatory Community Tourism Planning, Oksana Grybovych

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the current practices of citizen involvement in community tourism planning with the framework of deliberative democracy. The goal of this study was to expand the literature on tourism planning which currently lacks a working framework for participatory community tourism planning. Drawing from political philosophy, democratic theory, and planning literature, this study utilized the framework of deliberative democracy and planning as communicative action, in order to contribute to the development of a model of participatory community tourism planning.

The Globalization Of Health And Safety Standards: Delegation Of Regulatory Authority In The Sps Agreement Of The 1994 Agreement Establishing The World Trade Organization, Tim Buthe Jan 2008

The Globalization Of Health And Safety Standards: Delegation Of Regulatory Authority In The Sps Agreement Of The 1994 Agreement Establishing The World Trade Organization, Tim Buthe

Law and Contemporary Problems

Buthe examines why states delegated regulatory authority in the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures, an integral part of the founding treaty of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Buthe argues that, to explain this case of international delegation, principal-agent theory must be complemented by an analysis of cost-benefit calculations of the relevant domestic interest groups. Given these domestic interests, governments decided to institutionalize international cooperation on SPS measures outside of the WTO because they believed that such delegation would minimize the political costs of the loss of policymaking autonomy. Buthe notes, however, that in retrospect it …

Lésions Professionnelles Indemnisées Au Québec En 2000-2002. I : Profil Statistique Par Activité Économique, Patrice Duguay, Paul Massicotte, Pascale Prud'homme

Portraits statistiques
