Considering Language Convergence In Ontario: An Examination Of Variation In Hearst French, Ryan Rosso Jan 2008

Considering Language Convergence In Ontario: An Examination Of Variation In Hearst French, Ryan Rosso

McNair Scholars Journal

French speakers are rare in Ontario, Canada; only 2.6 percent of the population speaks French at home. However, several isolated French-speaking areas exist. While linguistic research in the province increases, little focus has been given to northern Ontario. This study will examine variation in the French of Hearst, Ontario, through the lens of previous Ontarian French studies in order to apply new evidence to some previous sociolinguistic theories of language convergence. Analysis of transcripts from a corpus of interviews with 34 local Francophones is expected to further the understanding of the relationship between French and English in Ontario.

What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate: Using A Model To Explain Textbook Representations Of Human Evolutionary Theory, Ben Winegard Jan 2008

What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate: Using A Model To Explain Textbook Representations Of Human Evolutionary Theory, Ben Winegard

McNair Scholars Journal

In this paper we develop a general model to explain the hostility toward, and ignorance of, human evolutionary theory (ET) in the social sciences. We first provide relevant theoretical background explaining the basics of ET. We then briefly describe the history of, and reasons for, social science attacks against ET. After providing this background, we turn to our study of social science textbooks, describe the logic of our model, and specify four explicit predictions derived from it. Finally, we present the results of our study and discuss the significance of our findings.

Indigenous Sovereignty: A Reassessment In Light Of The Un Declaration On The Rights Of Indigenous Peoples, Siegfried Wiessner Jan 2008

Indigenous Sovereignty: A Reassessment In Light Of The Un Declaration On The Rights Of Indigenous Peoples, Siegfried Wiessner

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article explores the concept of "indigenous sovereignty" against the backdrop of the resurgence of indigenous peoples as actors in international and domestic law and policy. The Author starts with the traditional Western notion of sovereignty and its dynamization via the principle of self-determination, cabined by the exclusionary concepts of "terra nullius" and "uti possidetis." The next Part delineates the global indigenous renascence occurring since the 1970s and the resulting state practice that has led to treaties and to the development of customary international law in the field. The Article proceeds to analyze the scope and legal effect of the …

Evidence Of Self-Correcting Spiral Flows In Swimming Boxfishes, I. K. Bartol, M. S. Gordon, P. Webb, D. Weihs, M. Gharib Jan 2008

Evidence Of Self-Correcting Spiral Flows In Swimming Boxfishes, I. K. Bartol, M. S. Gordon, P. Webb, D. Weihs, M. Gharib

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The marine boxfishes have rigid keeled exteriors (carapaces) unlike most fishes, yet exhibit high stability, high maneuverability and relatively low drag given their large cross-sectional area. These characteristics lend themselves well to bioinspired design. Based on previous stereolithographic boxfish model experiments, it was determined that vortical flows develop around the carapace keels, producing self-correcting forces that facilitate swimming in smooth trajectories. To determine if similar self-correcting flows occur in live, actively swimming boxfishes, two species of boxfishes (Ostracion meleagris and Lactophrys triqueter) were induced to swim against currents in a water tunnel, while flows around the fishes were quantified …

Artisans, Athletes, Entrepreneurs, And Other Skilled Exemplars Of The Way, Alex Stewart, Felissa Lee, Gregory N.P. Konz, S.J.

Management Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce management and spirituality scholars to the “knack” passages from the c. 4th century B.C.E. text, the Zhuangzi. The knack passages are parables about low status figures, such as wheelwrights, furniture makers and cooks, whose actions offer insights into the spirituality of ordinary work and, we argue, of entrepreneurship. Such non-corporate settings are lesser-studied domains for spirituality. Ancient Chinese writings have been noticed by spirituality and management writers but we call for deeper scholarly textual attention. We seek also to model more attention to the renaissance in scholarship on classical China. More ambitiously, we hope to show that these …

A Formative Evaluation Of Kentucky’S Environmental Compliance Assistance Program, Bonnie Wathen Jan 2008

A Formative Evaluation Of Kentucky’S Environmental Compliance Assistance Program, Bonnie Wathen

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Kentucky’s Department for Environmental Protection’s Division of Compliance Assistance has the Environmental Compliance Assistance Program (CAP). CAP is a relatively new program that has had little to no evaluation and measurement. However, with limited state resources to be distributed to departments, it is imperative that programs be able to justify their existence. Due to this fact, I chose to evaluate the CAP for my capstone project.

Because inadequate data on outcomes is available at this time, I was unable to conduct a traditional summative evaluation or include any statistical analysis. Instead I chose to conduct a formative, or process, evaluation …

Evaluating The Achievement Outcomes Of 5th-Grade Students Following Their Enrollment In Federally-Funded, Inquiry- Based Classrooms To Determine Program Sustainability, Daniel L. Frazier Jan 2008

Evaluating The Achievement Outcomes Of 5th-Grade Students Following Their Enrollment In Federally-Funded, Inquiry- Based Classrooms To Determine Program Sustainability, Daniel L. Frazier

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the achievement outcomes of 5th-grade students following their enrollment in federally funded inquiry-based classrooms compared to same school traditional education program students to determine the feasibility of inquiry-based program sustainability. The study analyzed achievement data of students in the inquiry-based Charter Education Program compared to achievement data of students in the Traditional Education Program to determine pretest-posttest achievement gain for students in both research arms and posttest-posttest intervention effectiveness. The inquiry-based Charter Education Program required students to utilize laptop computers rather than textbooks to research, analyze, write, and complete reports. The Traditional …

Book Review: Roy D. Zuck. Teaching As Paul Taught, David W. Robinson Jan 2008

Book Review: Roy D. Zuck. Teaching As Paul Taught, David W. Robinson

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The church of our Lord Jesus Christ has recognized from its foundation a vital connection between spirituality and the ministry of teaching. In his Great Commission to His disciples, now being transformed into His apostles, the Lord commanded them, saying, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matt 28:19-20a, NIV; emphasis mine) Likewise, Paul explicitly noted the spiritual gift and role of the teacher or the pastor-teacher several times in the scriptures …

Christian Education And Worldview, Richard Edlin Jan 2008

Christian Education And Worldview, Richard Edlin

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

What we believe as Christian educators is conveyed in many different ways to our students. The concept of worldview has been used in recent years to describe the comprehensive approach to reality that provides the foundation for how we understand the world and how we teach our students. Christians assert that worldview is a deeply religious concept, and that, particularly in education, we need to understand and critique our own worldviews to ensure that we are offering education that is faithful to our calling to celebrate the lordship of Christ over all of creation rather than an education that is …

Perceptions Of Doctoral Graduates On The Usefulness Of Written Reflections As An Instructional Strategy, Esther Swink Jan 2008

Perceptions Of Doctoral Graduates On The Usefulness Of Written Reflections As An Instructional Strategy, Esther Swink

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

One of the goals of the Ed.D. in Leadership and Professional Practice at Trevecca Nazarene University is for candidates to be reflective practitioners. Since the inception of the program in 1999, written reflections as an instructional strategy has been encouraged by the administration and used by several professors. This focus is supported by the conceptual framework that informs all courses and programs in the School of Education and includes the national standards adopted by INTASC (Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) which calls for teacher education candidates to be reflective practitioners who plan, implement, and evaluate effectively. This standard …

Developing Comprehensive Induction Programs At Christian Schools, Joann Looney Jan 2008

Developing Comprehensive Induction Programs At Christian Schools, Joann Looney

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The 1980s were classified as a time of “national awakening” (Goodlad, 1990, p. 1) to the complexities of restructuring our schools. Educational problems ranging from high drop out rates to low test scores could not be adequately and professionally addressed until the nation’s leaders acknowledged that “the renewal of schools, teachers and the programs that educate teachers must proceed simultaneously” (Goodlad, 1990. p. 4).

An Analysis Of Wastewater Temperature Variations In Six Remote Monitored Onsite Systems., Joseph M. Kamalesh Jan 2008

An Analysis Of Wastewater Temperature Variations In Six Remote Monitored Onsite Systems., Joseph M. Kamalesh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As technology innovations occur, the complexity of the processes involved increases, resulting in a greater need for automated monitoring and control systems that have become a key component in process management. In order to effectively and efficiently manage an onsite wastewater treatment system, remote monitoring using telemetry is becoming a more feasible option. Telemetry supplies continuous data which need to be well organized and maintained for later usage. The primary objective of this US EPA funded project was to test and evaluate the applicability of the need for this "centralized paradigm" in the context of managing onsite systems distributed and …

Experimentalism, Relativity And Quantum Mechanics At A Land Grant Institution: West Virginia University, 1920-1960., Eric S. Wright

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis details the response of a land-grant university to the development of quantum mechanics and relativity across a forty-year period. Concurrently with this, it traces the pattern of normal research at the university to show how the development of new physical theories impacted a representative physics department. The Physics department at West Virginia University at first paid little attention to relativity then after 1924 rejected its theoretical underpinnings. Wholesale acceptance of the theory did not occur until after the replacement of the pre-World War II generation of physicists. Quantum mechanics did not make significant inroads at West Virginia University …
