Bullying: An Age-Old Problem That Needs New Solutions, Shelley Hymel, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano Nov 2008

Bullying: An Age-Old Problem That Needs New Solutions, Shelley Hymel, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

In recent years, bullying has begun to receive serious research attention within the scientific community, with the first systematic studies on bullying emerging in the 1970s by Norwegian researcher, Dan Olweus. Today, bullying is recognized as a worldwide issue for children and youth around the globe, and research on the topic increasing exponentially. Media attention to the tragic deaths of youth who were victims of bullying has raised public awareness in countries around the world, and our rapidly growing capacity for global communication has given rise to an unprecedented international exchange of information, as well as cross-national studies of the …

School As A Center For Community: Establishing Neighborhood Identity Through Public Space And Educational Facility, Fred Goykhman Nov 2008

School As A Center For Community: Establishing Neighborhood Identity Through Public Space And Educational Facility, Fred Goykhman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

“Safety is an opportunity for people to open their minds” -Jin Baek, 2008

For my thesis I will design an education facility. That education facility will strive to meet with today's security needs and will provide a safe-feeling place for growth. In identifying the problem, I found two main causes for the described conditions in today's schools. They are improper adaptation and uniform building type.

Improper adaptation has to do with surface applications, rather than integrating with the social fabric of the school's communal requirements. Unfortunate incidents have caused the solutions to heightened security around schools to be fortressing and …

Can Waters Around Durney Key, Pasco County, Florida, Support Coral Recruitment To Artificial Substrates?, Kelley L. Anderson Nov 2008

Can Waters Around Durney Key, Pasco County, Florida, Support Coral Recruitment To Artificial Substrates?, Kelley L. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To determine whether an artificial reef installation is feasible, there must be a thorough characterization of the habitat. An understanding of both small-scale and large-scale environmental processes is needed to determine factors that potentially will influence the reef. Large-scale processes include coastal circulation, wave climate, and sediment dynamics that take place over spatial scales of tens to hundreds of kilometers in the region of the reef. Small-scale processes include the physical characteristics in the immediate vicinity of the reef - the local current, wave and tide characteristics, temperature, salinity, and suspended and bottom sediments at a proposed reef site.

The …

Bullying: Understanding Attitudes Toward Bullying And Perceptions Of School Social Climate, Kisha Haye, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano, Courtney Miller

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Main questions: What are students’ attitudes toward bullying? Do those attitudes differ when students are involved in bullying? If students are involved in bullying, do they have different perceptions of school climate compared to those students not involved in bullying? Lastly, are students’ attitudes toward bullying related to their perception of school climate?

The Remittance Environment In Nigeria, A. Englama Nov 2008

The Remittance Environment In Nigeria, A. Englama

CBN Occasional Papers

This preliminary study is on the remittance environment in Nigeria which became compelling because of low availability of information and empirical research on the subject. The need to obtain evidence-based information to drive policy formulation on remittances inflow which grew from US$1.4 billion in 2002 to US$17.9 billion in 2007 and tap its potentials to promote economic growth in Nigeria were the rationale for the study. An understanding of the drivers, inhibitors, characteristics, cost of transaction and channels of the flows would promote policy formulation to improve the remittance environment. The objectives of the survey were to examine current trend …

Generation Of High Speed, Linear Wavelength Sweeps Using Sampled Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector Lasers, Shane O' Connor, Michael A. Bernacil, Dennis Derickson Nov 2008

Generation Of High Speed, Linear Wavelength Sweeps Using Sampled Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector Lasers, Shane O' Connor, Michael A. Bernacil, Dennis Derickson

Electrical Engineering

Wavelength-tunable sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SG-DBR) lasers are used for telecommunications applications in which the laser is set to a communication channel and changed infrequently. SG-DBR lasers can be tuned to any wavelength over a 50 nm tuning range with fast transition times using a set of three control currents. This paper demonstrates generation of fast linear wavelength ramps covering the entire tuning range of the laser. Continuous and linear wavelength sweeps are achieved by applying three time synchronized waveforms to the front mirror, back mirror, and phase sections of the laser. Continuous wavelength coverage is achieved by appending …

Smartstore: A New Metadata Organization Paradigm With Metadata Semantic-Awareness For Next-Generation File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng, Lei Tian Nov 2008

Smartstore: A New Metadata Organization Paradigm With Metadata Semantic-Awareness For Next-Generation File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng, Lei Tian

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Existing data storage systems based on hierarchical directory tree do not meet scalability and functionality requirements for exponentially growing datasets and increasingly complex metadata queries in large-scale file systems with billions of files and Exabytes of data. This paper proposes a novel decentralized semantic-aware metadata organization, called SmartStore, which exploits metadata semantics of files to judiciously aggregate correlated files into semantic-aware groups by using information retrieval tools. The decentralized design of SmartStore can improve system scalability and reduce query latency for both complex queries (including range and top-k queries), which is helpful to construct semantic-aware caching, and conventional filename-based point …

Ideas: An Identity-Based Security Architecture For Large-Scale And High-Performance Storage Systems, Zhongying Niu, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang Nov 2008

Ideas: An Identity-Based Security Architecture For Large-Scale And High-Performance Storage Systems, Zhongying Niu, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We develop IDEAS, an identity-based security architecture for large-scale and high-performance storage systems, designed to improve security, convenience and total cost of access control by merging identity management with access control in these systems. IDEAS authenticates users at each I/O node by using a single-identity certificate without the service of a centralized security server and enforces access control mechanism by using an object-based access control (OBAC) model, which is designed to address the complexity and scalability issue of security administration in large-scale storage systems. We also discuss the issue of how to identify and authenticate a large number of users …

Rethinking The Historical Lens: A Case For Relational Identity In Sandra Cisneros's The House On Mango Street, Annalisa Wiggins Nov 2008

Rethinking The Historical Lens: A Case For Relational Identity In Sandra Cisneros's The House On Mango Street, Annalisa Wiggins

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis proposes a theory of relational identity development in Chicana literature. Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/La Frontera offers an interpretation of Chicana identity that is largely based on historical models and mythology, which many scholars have found useful in interpreting Chicana literature. However, I contend that another text, Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street, not only illustrates the need for an alternative paradigm for considering identity development, but in fact offers such an alternative. I argue that Cisneros shows a model for relational identity development, wherein the individual develops in the context of her community and is not determined solely …
