Atonement In Hosea And The Prodigal Son: Relationality As Personhood And The Being Of God, Stephen Sherwood Sep 2008

Atonement In Hosea And The Prodigal Son: Relationality As Personhood And The Being Of God, Stephen Sherwood

Seminary Masters Theses

My project will provide a survey of traditional atonement metaphors, with a particular emphasis upon contrasting penal substitution with a covenantal relational understanding of the atonement, and will then posit that a covenantal relational approach is ideal for resonance with a postmodem audience.

I will seek to determine whether any single biblical metaphor or cluster of metaphors provides an interpretive matrix for all discussion of the atonement in a way that is both biblically faithful and conceptually accessible to a postmodem world. I contend that atonement discussions in typical evangelical contexts may be both biblically insufficient and culturally inadequate and …

Leading In The Midst Of Change: A Theologically Grounded, Theoretically Informed Hermeneutic Of Change, Terri L. Elton Sep 2008

Leading In The Midst Of Change: A Theologically Grounded, Theoretically Informed Hermeneutic Of Change, Terri L. Elton

Faculty Publications

This essay proposes a hermeneutic of change, grounded in theology and theory, which can inform church leaders’ strategic actions in the midst of change. Drawing from the work of practical theology, it looks at four vantage points proposed by Don Browning: descriptive, historical, systematic, and strategic. The descriptive view offers two insights: God is active and present in the midst of change and God’s people are simultaneously saints and sinners. The historical perspective points out that God has always been in the midst of change, but God’s love and promises for the world have not changed. Systematic theology fuses the …

William Blake's Artificial Mythology And Quotations From World Mythos, Teresa L. Cunningham Aug 2008

William Blake's Artificial Mythology And Quotations From World Mythos, Teresa L. Cunningham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The central theme of this thesis is the visual analysis of William Blake's art in connection to the available mythological and religious texts by which Blake constructed his own artificial mythology. This analysis will include explorations into Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Jewish and Hindu myth as well as Christian and mystic texts. The various works or "books" by Blake will be the visual basis, specifically The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790), his later "prophetic" work Jerusalem, the Emanation of the Giant Albion (1820) and his last completed work The Illustrations of the Book of Job (1825). This thesis will affirm that …

About The Gospel Of John: Considering P66: A Literary History, Or A Categorical Hermeneutic, Christopher Ryan Haney Jul 2008

About The Gospel Of John: Considering P66: A Literary History, Or A Categorical Hermeneutic, Christopher Ryan Haney

Theses and Dissertations

New Testament text critics are fueled by a search for origins. But in the absence of an autograph, questions of origins are complicated at best. The fruit of that search for origins has resulted in the creation of hypothetical, eclectic texts—texts which have left us translating and interpreting the Bible in a form that no community in human history has before. Far from being failed projects, however, these eclectic versions aptly represent the problem of the One and the many, a problem not easily solved: When faced with hermeneutic duties, can we effectively speak of New Testament texts without speaking …

The Webb Magazine 2008, Summer, Noel T. Manning Ii

The Web Magazine

The Webb Magazine focuses on alumni news and campus events from Gardner-Webb College; now Gardner-Webb University. Much of this issue's subject matter reached beyond campus grounds and into the world; for example, articles about novels on Islam, community service, teaching across the globe, and working for international governments can all be found in this issue. Also, several scholarships are mentioned, such as the Martha Mason Challenge Endowed Scholarship. The issue concludes with the announcement of the newly implemented Center for Continuing Professional Education that GWU created.

Does Deuteronomy 32:17 Assume Or Deny The Reality Of Other Gods?, Michael Heiser Jul 2008

Does Deuteronomy 32:17 Assume Or Deny The Reality Of Other Gods?, Michael Heiser

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Deuteronomy 32, the Song of Moses, is well known among biblical scholars for its textual, linguistic, and translation difficulties. l Attention to Deut 32 has tended to focus on vv. 8-9, and 43 in light of fragments of those verses recovered at Qumran and their disagreement with the Masoretic Text (MT).' Though conceptually related to these verses and briefly discussed in commentaries, Deut 32.17 has received no concentrated attention in scholarly journals. Given the divergent ways the verse has been handled by Bible translators, Deut 32.17 deserves consideration.

Review Of Jonathan L. Reed, The Harpercollins Visual Guide To The New Testament [Review Of The Book The Harpercollins Visual Guide To The New Testament: What Archaeology Reveals About The First Christians, By J. L. Reed], Rubén R. Dupertuis Jul 2008

Review Of Jonathan L. Reed, The Harpercollins Visual Guide To The New Testament [Review Of The Book The Harpercollins Visual Guide To The New Testament: What Archaeology Reveals About The First Christians, By J. L. Reed], Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

Jonathan Reed begins the first chapter of The HarperCollins Visual Guide to the New Testament with the assertion that "archaeology is imperative for the study of the New Testament." This much most students of the New Testament and early Christian literature would grant. But how and to what degree is archaeology important to biblical studies is less clear and can be at times a contentious issue. The expectation that archaeology should provide proof of the historical reliability of the New Testament has for decades sent many a would-be Indiana Jones off in search of this or that biblical site with …

The Art Of Vision Casting For Church Multiplication, J. D. Payne Jul 2008

The Art Of Vision Casting For Church Multiplication, J. D. Payne

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

“A plan in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding draws it out.” Proverbs 20:5 (NASB). The writer of the above verse reminds us of the importance of having knowledge in regard to moving one’s plans out of the deep recesses of the heart to the surface to where those plans can be carried out. This proverb has much to say about casting a vision for multiplication. Casting, or drawing out that vision from the heart so that others will take ownership of that vision and work to carry it out, requires a discerning …

The State Of Church Planting In The United States: Research Overview And Qualitative Study Of Primary Church Planting Entities, Edward Stetzer, Warren Bird

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The launching of new Protestant churches in the United States, widely known as church planting, plays an increasing role in today's ecclesiastical landscape. This article summarizes salient findings from existing literature (multiple church planting studies, 54 doctoral dissertations, 41 journal articles, and over 100 church planting books and manuals), giving particular attention to a 2007 study by Leadership Network, which itself involved fresh research among more than 200 church-planting churches, over 100 leaders from 40 denominations, 45 church planting networks, 84 organic church leaders, 12 nationally known experts, and 81 colleges and seminaries. The Leadership Network findings review the contributions …

Finding And Losing One's Life: The Themes Of Gain And Loss In Matthew 10:32-42 And 16:21-28, Jeremiah Johnson May 2008

Finding And Losing One's Life: The Themes Of Gain And Loss In Matthew 10:32-42 And 16:21-28, Jeremiah Johnson

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The purpose of this paper is to explore the themes of gain and loss in Matt 10.32--42 and16.21-28 and their respective contexts. Gain and loss, however, are closely interrelated to various other themes throughout these texts and as well as the rest of the book of Matthew, and my exploration will reflect this fact. It is the thesis of this paper that the themes of gain and loss (as well as their ancillaries) are not only repeated but developed through these two texts.
