Race, Class, And Real Estate: Neoliberal Policies In A “Mixed Income” Neighborhood, Ashley E. Spalding Jan 2008

Race, Class, And Real Estate: Neoliberal Policies In A “Mixed Income” Neighborhood, Ashley E. Spalding

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the impact of HOPE VI (Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere), a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program, on Tampa's Greenwood neighborhood. The program represents a policy shift away from traditional public housing toward a "mixed income" model that has effectively privatized public housing. Through a HOPE VI program implemented in Tampa in 2000, two public housing complexes were demolished and redeveloped in this way. While some former residents of public housing relocated to other public housing complexes, many moved to apartments and houses in the private rental market with Section 8 subsidized housing vouchers-many to Tampa's Greenwood …

Living “Glocally” With Literacy Success In The Midwest, Loukia K. Sarroub Jan 2008

Living “Glocally” With Literacy Success In The Midwest, Loukia K. Sarroub

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article examines the concept of glocality as a way to better understand why immigrants, poor people, print-illiterate families, and boys are short-changed by schools that often operate under a deficit model or deprivation model in which students’ economic, language, and gender status is the main determinant for school success. The author offers for discussion a set of themes that address (a) the challenges of recent immigration and resettlement in the Midwestern region of the United States, (b) the concept of glocality in connection to youth literacies and transnationalism, (c) the Midwest as a glocal context, and (d) the implications …

Tales From The Crypt: Scientific, Ethical, And Legal Considerations For Biohistorical Analysis Of Deceased Historical Figures, Lori B. Andrews, Jordan K. Paradise Jan 2008

Tales From The Crypt: Scientific, Ethical, And Legal Considerations For Biohistorical Analysis Of Deceased Historical Figures, Lori B. Andrews, Jordan K. Paradise

All Faculty Scholarship

Biohistorical analysis involves using historic specimens of human remains or human material extracted or derived from historical artifacts to gather evidence about specimens that are identifiable or at least attributed to a historic figure at the time of the research. Biohistorical studies are being undertaken for myriad reasons, such as identification and authentication of remains, investigation into alleged criminal behavior, investigation into medical or psychological conditions, and even for purposes of commercialization. This article analyzes federal statutes, case law, and codes and guidelines from twenty-six professional organizations and societies informative to the field of biohistory. We surveyed the field, identified …

Improving Resolution Of Census Data In Metropolitan Areas Using A Dasymetric Approach: Applications For The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Christopher G. Boone Jan 2008

Improving Resolution Of Census Data In Metropolitan Areas Using A Dasymetric Approach: Applications For The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Christopher G. Boone

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

A dasymetric map is a type of thematic map where boundaries are altered by the distribution of other phenomena. In dasymetric maps, administrative or enumeration boundaries are redrawn to better represent the distribution of data classes. Dasymetric mapping methods can improve the resolution of historical and present day census data. Using data collected for the Baltimore Ecosystem Study, I use the dasymetric approach to remap the distribution of census data based on residential land use. By overlaying census boundaries with land use and land cover information in a GIS database, census data can be partitioned into places where, from the …

State-Building In A Post-Colonial Society: The Case Of Solomon Islands, Sinclair Dinnen Jan 2008

State-Building In A Post-Colonial Society: The Case Of Solomon Islands, Sinclair Dinnen

Chicago Journal of International Law

Despite growing levels of conflict and instability in parts of the southwest Pacific, Australia has, until recently, been reluctant to intervene in the affairs of neighboring states. As the dominant metropolitan power in the region, a former colony of Britain, and the ex-colonial administrator of Papua New Guinea, Australia has gone out of its way to avoid any perceptions of acting in an imperialist or neo-colonial fashion. Instead, its influence has been wielded primarily through diplomacy and bilateral development assistance. This traditional reluctance to intervene was also justified in terms of the practical limitations of external intervention, given the cultural …

Evaluating Chloroplast Dna In Prehistoric Texas Coprolites: Medicinal, Dietary, Or Ambient Ancient Dna? (Galley Proofs), Karl J. Reinhard, Sérgio M. Chaves, John G. Jones, Alena M. Iñiguez Jan 2008

Evaluating Chloroplast Dna In Prehistoric Texas Coprolites: Medicinal, Dietary, Or Ambient Ancient Dna? (Galley Proofs), Karl J. Reinhard, Sérgio M. Chaves, John G. Jones, Alena M. Iñiguez

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Molecular analysis of coprolites from Hinds Cave, Texas recovered chloroplast DNA sequences. The sequences were interpreted as evidence of diet. We analyzed 19 Hinds Cave coprolites to evaluate the potential sources of the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and compared our results to previous studies. This review shows that some cpDNA sequences could be from well-known prehistoric plants foods. Some other sequences could have come from ambient plant material in the guts of small animals eaten by humans in antiquity. Using pollen concentration analysis, we identify sources of ambient plant material which could have been inhaled or imbibed. It is even possible …

The Great White Mother: Maternalism And American Indian Child Removal In The American West, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs Jan 2008

The Great White Mother: Maternalism And American Indian Child Removal In The American West, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

A rich historiography has accumulated regarding American Indian boarding schools and the experience of Indian children within them. Western women's historians have also studied many white women who were involved in efforts to advocate for American Indians. Yet, in general, these two historiographical tracks have developed along parallel lines without intersecting. This essay argues, however, that white women were integrally involved in the removal of American Indian children to boarding schools and that their involvement implicated them in one of the most cruel, yet largely unexamined, policies of colonialism within the American West. Through a politics of maternalism, many white …

"How Is Haiti Doing?" Issues Of Accountability In A Voiceless Haiti: A Case Study Of The Lambi Fund, Emanna Louis Jan 2008

"How Is Haiti Doing?" Issues Of Accountability In A Voiceless Haiti: A Case Study Of The Lambi Fund, Emanna Louis

Open Access Theses

The rhetoric of development is a dominant driving factor for intervention into the Republic of Haiti. Millions are pumped into the small black republic located in the Caribbean for development projects motivated by health, HIV/AIDS awareness, religion, and sanitation just to name a few. Yet, despite the innumerable efforts of nongovernmental organizations and donor organizations in Haiti, the country is sinking deeper and deeper into desperate conditions. The motivation for this thesis is to examine the accountability that these organizations operating in Haiti have towards the Haitian peoples who are the targeted beneficiaries. Are they involved in the development process …

Generating Spatial Surplus: The Politics Of Zoning In The Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Alpen Suresh Sheth Jan 2008

Generating Spatial Surplus: The Politics Of Zoning In The Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Alpen Suresh Sheth

Open Access Theses

The study explores the implications of new forms of zoning in India. In particular, emerging development projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region serve as cases and instances of broader rezoning processes throughout the region. One is the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, a slum redevelopment project in central Mumbai on Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia; the other is the Mumbai Special Economic Zone, a private economic enclave spanning an area of 10,000 hectares (100 sq km) on agricultural land in the northern Raigad district of Maharashtra. Despite being unique and spatially-circumscribed projects, I argue that together they constitute a critical departure …

Social Dominance And Conciliatory Gestures As Determinants Of Reconciliation And Forgiveness, Adam Cohen Jan 2008

Social Dominance And Conciliatory Gestures As Determinants Of Reconciliation And Forgiveness, Adam Cohen

Open Access Theses

In this project I evaluated the effect of social dominance on reconciliation and forgiveness. Based on studies of nonhuman primates, it was hypothesized that humans would be more likely to accept and reciprocate conciliatory gestures when made by more socially dominant people. It was also hypothesized that the moderating effect of relative dominance on a victim?s decision to forgive would not be as strong as relative dominance?s effect on a victim?s decision to reconcile. This hypothesis was based on the expectation that reconciliation is most essential for gaining access to transgressor-controlled resources. However, conciliatory gestures by less dominant transgressors more …
