Valentine Moghadam. Globalizing Women: Transnational Feminist Networks. Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2005., Teal Rothschild

Reason and Respect

Valentine Moghadam has written a much-needed text outlining the work of transnational activists concerned with women’s rights worldwide. Moghadam informs the reader that in an era characterized by heightened globalization and a restructuring of the state, there is a critical mass of educated, employed, mobile, and politically conscious women around the world, responding to the gendered process of globalization.

The American Militia Movement In The Age Of Globalization, Erin Kania

Reason and Respect

The current trend of globalization, led largely by a rise in technological advances and increased accessibility of communication between countries, is beginning to influence the major social institutions that are present within American society. The traditional systems of the family, economy, education, law and politics, and the religious communities are being forced to implement new strategies and identities based on the adoption of globalization.

Myanmarese Refugees In Thailand: The Need For Effective Protection, Buhm Suk Baek, Gauri Subramanium Feb 2008

Myanmarese Refugees In Thailand: The Need For Effective Protection, Buhm Suk Baek, Gauri Subramanium

Cornell Law School J.S.D. Student Research Papers

This paper deals with the Thai government's policy on refugees with a special focus on refugees from Myanmar. It is designed to give suggestions to international human rights NGOs working in the Thai-Myanmar border areas for the protection of the human rights of Myanmarese refugees. Most international human rights NGOs in this region are lobbying for the Thai government to ratify the Refugee Convention or at the very least, take active steps towards the protection of refugees under customary international law.

This paper is, however, concerned by these NGOs’ reliance on the ratification of the Convention as a solution to …

Into The Breach: The Legislative Function Of Taboo, Ali M. Abrar Feb 2008

Into The Breach: The Legislative Function Of Taboo, Ali M. Abrar

Socio-Legal Review

Taboos are often viewed with suspicion by modern eyes. The very word "taboo" evokes a sense of unfreedom, of limitation. Indeed, when one thinks of now-extinct taboos, the repressive and reactionary nature of taboos is clearly displayed. This, however, is not an argument for the dismantling of all taboos. There are many aspects of social lfe that a community may wish to govern but cannot through the regular legislative channels. In many cases, such governance might be viewed as an unjustifiable infringement on libery. There are, however, some cases in which a taboo may be justified because of the protection …

Self-Promotion Saturday: Introductions, Kate Merkel-Hess

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

By this point, some of our readers may be wondering who the China Beatwriters are, or rather wondering who is involved beside the few names that ring a bell. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce everyone—briefly, since this is an accomplished group, and full introductions might run rather long.

As several commentators have already noted, we have a healthy contingent of contributors from the University of California, Irvine. UCI is my own home, and other Orange County-based contributors include Ken Pomeranz (who has produced ambitious works of comparative history, such as The Great Divergence, as well as …

Blobaum Finds Meaning In Milo Festival

This Month

Eve Blobaum, who hails from a small town in Nebraska, is looking at the ways in which community festivals function as ritual reproductions of traditional values, symbolic constructions of community identity, and in the case of small rural towns passing from existence, a means to cope with social change.

Persistence Of Vision: Hegemony And Counterhegemony In The Everyday, Roberto E. Bahruth Feb 2008

Persistence Of Vision: Hegemony And Counterhegemony In The Everyday, Roberto E. Bahruth

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

A gathering of subjects of history, activists who are engaging in the struggle for humanization, provides the ideal circumstance for pedagogical explorations that are generative and organic. Contrary to state-sponsored schooling, where inductees are treated as objects, receptacles of what Gabbard3 refers to as "the secular gospel," participants in the International Institute of Peace Education (IIPE) 2008 held in Haifa, Israel demonstrated the power of critical pedagogical encounters to move people to act not only with clarity and determination in, but also if necessary, against the everyday. After years of cultural work in a variety of terrains of engagement, …

Millennial Students, Movies And Tourism, Jeeyeon Hahm, Randall Upchurch, Youcheng Wang Feb 2008

Millennial Students, Movies And Tourism, Jeeyeon Hahm, Randall Upchurch, Youcheng Wang

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study examines the degree to which the leisure activity of "going to a movie film" influences an individual's image formation process, and therefore desire to visit the portrayed tourist destination. The results of this single case study are twofold. First, demographic differences occur between pretest and posttest measures of destination attributes as the result of exposure to a destination specific movie, and second, the desire to visit the film locations as expressed in the movie significantly vary by gender, age, and ethnicity.

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

While Quality of Life (QOL) has long been an explicit or implicit policy goal, adequate definition and measurement have been elusive. Diverse "objective" and "subjective" indicators across a range of disciplines and scales, and recent work on subjective well-being (SWB) surveys and the psychology of happiness have spurred renewed interest. Drawing from multiple disciplines, we present an integrative definition of QOL that combines measures of human needs with subjective well-being or happiness. QOL is proposed as a multiscale, multi-dimensional concept that contains interacting objective and subjective elements. We relate QOL to the opportunities that are provided to meet human needs …
