Hiram Bingham’S Expedition And The Peruvian Response: A Connecticut Yanqui In The Land Of The Incas, Aaron Wiener May 2008

Hiram Bingham’S Expedition And The Peruvian Response: A Connecticut Yanqui In The Land Of The Incas, Aaron Wiener

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

On June 15, 1915, the renowned Yale historian-turned-explorer Hiram Bingham III returned from a three-week trek along the Salcantay trail to find his Ollantaytambo headquarters occupied by four hostile young Peruvian men. In the name of the Instituto Histórico del Cuzco, they accused him of violating the prefect’s decree prohibiting the excavation of Inca sites in the vicinity. Their suspicions were not unwarranted. Lining the walls of the office were large wooden cases, full of archaeological specimens. They demanded to investigate the contents of the boxes, charging that Bingham was smuggling gold and treasures out of Peru by way of …

Promoting Positive Youth Development: Relational Data Analysis (Rda), William M. Kurtines, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Lisa Lewis Arango, Gabrielle Kortsch, Richard Albrecht, Arlene Garcia, Rachel Ritchie, Kyle Eichas

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This article provides an overview of the origins and use of relational data analysis (RDA). RDA is a multidimensional, multiphasic framework for unifying data analytic strategies across dimensions (quantitative/qualitative, causal/structural, observation/interpretation, etc.) and phases of analyses (conceptual, theoretical, and research analyses). RDA was developed within a relational metatheoretical methodological framework for overcoming the splits that have historically characterized methodological metatheory. The aim was to formulate a practical, ready-at-hand framework that the developmental scientist could use to unify the analysis of developmental change in real life “applied” settings as well as clinic and laboratory settings.

The Relationship Of Work And Grades Among Undergraduate Students, Stefanie Thomas, Sarah Scaturro May 2008

The Relationship Of Work And Grades Among Undergraduate Students, Stefanie Thomas, Sarah Scaturro

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Full-time undergraduate students take a minimum of 12 credit hours per week and several of them also work part-time jobs outside of school. If an inverse relationship exists between grades and work, it could potentially affect students’ choices. In the present study, 84 participants filled out a survey with questions pertaining to the subject of grades and work, in addition to other variables like sex and grade status. We found a fairly strong inverse relationship existed between a student’s G.P.A. and the number of hours a student worked outside of school. We found a strong relationship exists between the total …

Sleep Soundly, Mike Browne, Adam Saito May 2008

Sleep Soundly, Mike Browne, Adam Saito

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

College students are constantly torn between a social life and an academic life. The erratic and crazy lifestyle that they live is one of a kind, and the things they do can greatly affect their grades. One of the things that many people believe is that better quality of sleep can lead to better grades in school. Through this experiment we tried to find statistical significance to support the hypothesis that lower sleep debt would relate to a higher GPA. We analyzed the surveys of 68 students, 39 women and 29 men, to rate sleep debt and record their associated …

Defining Acquaintance Rape: College Students' Perceptions Of Sexual Consent And Coercion, Sara Elizabeth Buck Doude May 2008

Defining Acquaintance Rape: College Students' Perceptions Of Sexual Consent And Coercion, Sara Elizabeth Buck Doude

Dissertations

Perceptions of rape have evolved dramatically over the past decade. Prior to the second wave of the feminist movement, rape was perceived to be committed by a psychotic man against a woman. The feminist movement brought the term "acquaintance rape" into the popular lexicon and into the forefront of women's consciousness. As a result, throughout the 1970s and 1980s state governments enacted laws to prohibit "sexual assault," or expanded existing rape laws to include a variety of relationships or sexual acts. However, public perceptions of rape did not evolve as rapidly. Despite legislative efforts, there is no universally understood definition …

The Rhetorical Strategies Of Pregnancy Support Centers Including The Visual Rhetoric Of Fetal Ultrasound Technology, Raymond Kyle Jones

Dissertations

This study examined the rhetorical strategies, including verbal and visual rhetoric, of pregnancy support centers that provide clients with fetal ultrasounds to persuade those who may be considering abortion as a means of resolving their unplanned pregnancy to carry to term. Qualitative data were gathered from 12 interviews of directors and ultrasound personnel from 7 states as well as from television advertisements and printed material. Eighteen research questions investigating the rhetorical transactions between centers and clients were answered. Rhetorical analyses were performed on the verbal and visual messages used in client interactions.

The grounded theory approach of inquiry resulted in …

Work Ethic In America: Urban Vs. Rural, Lindsey D. Geeding

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The present study was conducted in order to see if there were any differences in work ethic between urban and rural areas in America. The subjects were recruited from Lindenwood University Human Subjects Pool. The subjects were given a questionnaire created by the researcher, and a survey created by Mirles and Garrett (1997). As the results showed, there were not enough participants gathered to show predicted trends. However, the results did show that International students have a stronger work ethic than American students.

Worlds Of Music Apart: An Alternative Narrative Of The Fez Festival Of World Sacred Music, Adrian Stover May 2008

Worlds Of Music Apart: An Alternative Narrative Of The Fez Festival Of World Sacred Music, Adrian Stover

Music Department Honors Papers

The intention of this thesis is to describe how the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music generates a narrative of globalization that is largely outside the Western academic perspective. Even as the festival structures a hegemonic relationship between local elites who can afford concert tickets and those with less economic means who attend events on the periphery of the festival, local resistance to the festival is limited; it is controlled through a narrative that resonates with local, spiritual, and aesthetic values. My project is based on my experience as a participant observer during my internship at La Fondation Ésprit de …

Living Through The Tension: Religion And Public Policy In The Thought Of Gilbert Meilaender, Mark W. Foreman May 2008

Living Through The Tension: Religion And Public Policy In The Thought Of Gilbert Meilaender, Mark W. Foreman

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine and evaluate the position of Gilbert Meilaender on the appropriateness of appealing to religious reasons as support for one's position on issues of public policy. The dissertation establishes that, while Meilaender often discusses public policy issues directly or indirectly from a distinctively Christian perspective, he argues that such discussions are unavoidable, appropriate and consistent with toleration for other views in a pluralistic democracy. While this may create a certain amount of tension within pluralistic democracy, it poses no serious threat to social stability and can be both civically virtuous and respectful of …

Romance In College: Effects Of Relationship Stress And Commitment On Scholastic Performance, Lauren Alderson, Kate Gruenloh May 2008

Romance In College: Effects Of Relationship Stress And Commitment On Scholastic Performance, Lauren Alderson, Kate Gruenloh

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Due to the increased number of observed college students involved in romantic relationships, we decided to conduct a study to see if any correlation existed between those involved in romantic relationships and the students’ academics. In addition to this hypothesis, we were also interested in the varying levels of stress and commitment of a romantic relationship and their influence on academic performance. However after surveying 66 college participants regarding their feelings and opinions about their current or past relationships, our statistical findings did not support our initial research hypothesis.

Men And Women: Preferences In Description, Christopher H. Cook, Debra Leek, Stefanie Sutton May 2008

Men And Women: Preferences In Description, Christopher H. Cook, Debra Leek, Stefanie Sutton

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

With many observable differences between men and women, this study tires to identify preferences in description of specific colored shape stimuli. We hypothesized that men would more likely describe the stimuli by naming its shape while women would most likely identify the color. Our study found significant difference between men and women’s descriptions, but not in a way to support our hypothesis. Undergraduate students recruited through the Lindenwood University Human Subject Pool for this experiment showed that men mostly described the stimuli using “other” phrases (like stop sign or sun) while women mostly identified stimuli by shape. However, women described …

Stereotyping, Racism, And The College Student, Martha Tarnowski May 2008

Stereotyping, Racism, And The College Student, Martha Tarnowski

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This experiment intended to study how college students use racism and stereotyping in judging new people as well as how influential these assumptions can be. It will also examine whether women are more likely than men to use stereotypes as a basis for their opinion and whether the severity of the stereotype has anything to do with the amount of influence it has on a person’s judgment. Participants will be given a questionnaire regarding demographics and their personal opinions on racism and stereotyping as well as a short scenario with questions regarding their reaction to what they read. The study …

Differences Between Races During Questioning By The Police, Amy Barron

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This experiment was conducted with 100 volunteers from Lindenwood University (20 staff and 80 students). There were 56 male and 44 female participants. Each participant took a survey pertaining to their past encounters with the police. The researcher was trying to determine if there was: a) a difference between races in the amount of people who had been questioned by the police for looking suspicious, b) the reason why the people who had been questioned felt they had, c) if there was a difference between sexes and questioning for looking suspicious and d) if any sex and race combination was …

Adopting A Grounded Theory Approach To Cultural-Historical Research: Conflicting Methodologies Or Complementary Methods?, Jayson O. Seaman May 2008

Adopting A Grounded Theory Approach To Cultural-Historical Research: Conflicting Methodologies Or Complementary Methods?, Jayson O. Seaman

Kinesiology

Grounded theory has long been regarded as a valuable way to conduct social and educational research. However, recent constructivist and postmodern insights are challenging long-standing assumptions, most notably by suggesting that grounded theory can be flexibly integrated with existing theories. This move hinges on repositioning grounded theory from a methodology with positivist underpinnings to an approach that can be used within different theoretical frameworks. In this article the author reviews this recent transformation of grounded theory, engages in the project of repositioning it as an approach by using cultural historical activity theory as a test case, and outlines several practical …
