Advice, Cautions, And Opportunities For The Teachers Of Binational Teachers: Learning From Teacher Training Experiences Of Georgia And Nebraska Teachers In Mexico, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

With the rapid growth and geographic spread of Mexican-origin student populations in the United States, the practice of U.S. teachers going to Mexico for travel study/professional development has become increasingly common. This paper considers what U.S teachers’ Mexican travel study experiences entail by looking at narratives from Nebraska and Georgia educators who made summer trips to Mexico to learn about Mexican education.

Pre-Service Science Teacher Sense Of Self In Developing Multicultural Practice, Yuki Marie Monteith May 2008

Pre-Service Science Teacher Sense Of Self In Developing Multicultural Practice, Yuki Marie Monteith

Dissertations and Theses

The development of multicultural science teaching practices is becoming more crucial as the student population in public schools becomes more diverse. Multicultural teaching practices are even more important when disparities in science achievement can be delimited by racial, ethnic or cultural affiliation. Using a phenomenological perspective, this study explored science pre-service teachers' sense of self after a year of teacher education. Content analysis of themes arising from the study identified three areas specific to their sense of self: (a) the unconscious influence of beliefs about science culture, (b) the fundamental beliefs of the U.S. middle class, and (c) superficial beliefs …

The Impact Of Student Involvement And Engagement On African American Undergraduate Success In College, Keron A. Piper

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of the study was to investigate student involvement and engagement levels and its impact on various aspects of student life on selected African American students at Rowan University. Data were collected by means of a Likert-style survey. In addition, a focus group was conducted consisting of students from the survey sample. Immigration And Women's Empowerment: Indo-Caribbeans In New York City, Farah Persaud

Honors College Theses

Since the signing of the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965, there has been a massive influx of West Indian immigrants in New York City. Today, the West Indian subpopulation has grown to be among the largest minority groups in New York City. With such strong ethnic presence, sociologists such as Nancy Foner, Philip Kasinitz, and Mary C. Waters have documented various aspects of the West Indian immigrant experience, such as degree of assimilation, ethnic and racial identities, and transnational relations. However, most of these studies focus on the Afro-Caribbean migrant experience and overlook the experiences of the many West Indians …

Fuel Costs, Migration, And Community Viability, Stephanie Martin, Mary Killorin, Steve Colt May 2008

Fuel Costs, Migration, And Community Viability, Stephanie Martin, Mary Killorin, Steve Colt

ISER Reports

ISER researchers compiled and reviewed existing studies and data sources relating to the economic and social viability of remote rural Alaska communities. We particularly looked for possible linkages between high fuel costs and migration. Our review indicates the following: (1) migration from smaller places toward larger places is an ongoing phenomenon that is more noticeable when birth rates drop; (2) there is no systematic empirical evidence that fuel prices, by themselves, have been a definitive cause of migration; (3) the pursuit of economic and educational opportunities appears to be a predominant cause of migration; (4) however, currently available survey data …
