Of Muslim Persuasion: The Politics Of Convivencia In Ceuta, Spain, Gabriel Alejandro Torres Colón
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation examines everyday interactions and political struggles between self-identified Christians and Muslims in the North African Spanish exclave of Ceuta. I explore how each group envisions themselves as part of a local and national community, and then I consider how such visions affect local political processes in everyday life and institutional politics. This dissertation brings a political anthropological perspective to the study of multiculturalism and presents a theoretical perspective for the study of difference in various political contexts.
Indigenous Peoples And Gene Disputes, Debra Harry
Indigenous Peoples And Gene Disputes, Debra Harry
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Wary from decades exploitation in the name of science, Indigenous peoples typically approach externally-generated research with caution, and for good reason. Indigenous peoples have been on the receiving end of research carried out in insensitive, and sometimes, harmful ways. Research has historically been a top-down, outside-in process, with Indigenous peoples serving merely as research subjects, with little opportunity for meaningful participation or benefit from the outcomes of the research. Over the past two decades, with the advent of the Human Genome Project and other genetic research projects, there has been a corresponding increase in genetic research projects that put Indigenous …

Gender Dependence And Attitudes Toward The Distribution Of Household Labor: A Comparative And Multilevel Analysis, Sheri L. Kunovich, Robert M. Kunovich
Gender Dependence And Attitudes Toward The Distribution Of Household Labor: A Comparative And Multilevel Analysis, Sheri L. Kunovich, Robert M. Kunovich
Sociology Research
We use comparative and multilevel methods to examine attitudes toward the distribution of household labor in 32 countries. We test hypotheses derived from Baxter and Kane’s (1995) gender dependence theory, which suggests complex relationships between societal-level gender dependence, individual-level gender dependence, and gender attitudes. Country-level data are from the United Nations and survey data are from the International Social Survey Programme’s 2002 Family and Changing Gender Roles III module. Our analysis is among the first to combine societal and individual indicators of gender dependence using multilevel modeling and to test for cross-level interactions between societal and individual gender dependence. Results …
Scratching The Surface: A Comparison Of Girl Soldiers From Three Geographic Regions Of The World, Carolyn R. Spellings
Scratching The Surface: A Comparison Of Girl Soldiers From Three Geographic Regions Of The World, Carolyn R. Spellings
International Education
Over 300,000 children are estimated to be conscripted participants in conflicts throughout the world. Depending on the particular armed group that employs child soldiers, girls represent 6 to 50% of child soldiers. Despite this prevalence of involvement, the experience of girls as soldiers in war and political conflict has rarely been investigated. In order to build a foundation for more focused study on girl soldier experiences, this literature review aims to provide a comprehensive report of girl soldiers throughout the world. The analysis focused on three aspects of conflict experience: (1) how girls become affiliated with armed groups; (2) their …
Total Station Mapping: Practical Examples From Alta And Baja California, Tsim D. Schneider, Lee M. Panich
Total Station Mapping: Practical Examples From Alta And Baja California, Tsim D. Schneider, Lee M. Panich
Faculty Publications
The use of electronic total data stations for mapping archaeological sites is examined through two California case studies. Mission Santa Catalina, located in the high desert of Baja California, and a cluster of three shell mounds, located in a forest in the San Francisco Bay area, represent two different examples of organizing and implementing a mapping program using a total station. In this article, we will discuss the basic use of total stations for mapping archaeological sites and provide an overview of the process of creating digital maps from data obtained using a total station. The two case studies will …
Cortisol Response Of Non-Suicidal Self-Injurers Versus Non-Self-Injurers Exposed To A Social Rejection Laboratory Stressor, Patrick L. Kerr
Cortisol Response Of Non-Suicidal Self-Injurers Versus Non-Self-Injurers Exposed To A Social Rejection Laboratory Stressor, Patrick L. Kerr
Theses and Dissertations
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSI) represents a growing area of concern in a variety of clinical settings, yet remains a poorly understood phenomenon. An influx of research on the functions of NSI over the past decade has suggested a biopsychosocial emotional regulation model of this behavior. This model proposes that self-injurers engage in NSI to reduce negative emotions, and presupposes that self-injurers are characterized by emotional dysregulation. The present study evaluated the biological component of this model by assessing hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPAA) functioning in a group of self-injurers(n=26) and non-injuring healthy controls (n=28). HPAA functioning was assessed via measuring salivary cortisol levels …

Ethnomedicinal Observations Among Forest Dwellers Of The Daitari Range Of Hills Of Orissa, India, Sarada P. Mohapatra, Gagan B. Prusty, Hara P. Sahoo
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Studies on hill tribes’ dependence on forest for their livelihood security are few for Orissa. Ethno medicinal observations in the state with a rich diversity of medicinal plants are still meager. The present study enumerates 21 plant species belonging to 18 families used in the treatment of various diseases among the tribes of Daitari Hill ranges of Orissa. The forest dwellers usually collect those rare plants from the nearby forest which is easily accessible and the medicines are prepared under the guidance of Vaidya or the village medicine man and are applied according to the dosage prescribed by the Vaidya. …
The Making And Nurturing Of Relationships: An Ujelang/Enewetak Model In The Context Of Change, Laurence Marshall Carucci
The Making And Nurturing Of Relationships: An Ujelang/Enewetak Model In The Context Of Change, Laurence Marshall Carucci
Pacific Studies
Pacific adoption has long served as a prototypical contrary case that complicates the ethnocentric and simplistic kinship logics of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology—logical approaches which themselves project and perpetuate Euro-American ideas about relatedness. Yet, at the same moment the Pacific adoption literature has confronted the biases of Euro-American categories of kinship and interpersonal relatedness, it also has perpetuated certain stereotypic contours of those categories by shadowing the outlines of their very existence. Escaping those contours in an English publication is, ultimately, impossible. Nevertheless, more finely rendered accounts are attainable. In this paper, I attempt to fashion one such account, a …

Constituent Order And Participant Reference In Dolnia Hani Narrative Discourse, Karen L. Gainer
Constituent Order And Participant Reference In Dolnia Hani Narrative Discourse, Karen L. Gainer
Theses and Dissertations
Hani is a language in the Loloish family, spoken primarily in Yunnan Province of southwest China. This thesis presents a description of constituent order and participant reference in written Hani narrative discourse. The primary data source for this thesis consists of three narratives, which are included in the appendices.
Constituent order in Hani is largely constrained by the principle of natural information flow. In order to conform to this principle, some constituents may appear in two or more different positions in the clause, depending on the information structure of the assertion being made. Information structure also influences the use and …

Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale
Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
In this article, delivered originally in 1998 at Marquette University, the author confronts the reality of racism by introducing the need for racial reconciliation. Addressing such issues as social structures and evangelical approaches to the question of race, Massingale ends with a critique of the approach of Catholic theologians and ethicists to racial justice. In the end, Massingale remarks that for Catholics the legacy of slavery continues to hinder an openness to the reality of Africans and African Americans in the Church and in society.

Nurturing Spirituality And Vocation: A Catholic Approach To New Teacher Induction, Richard Shields
Nurturing Spirituality And Vocation: A Catholic Approach To New Teacher Induction, Richard Shields
Journal of Catholic Education
The Catholic school system in Ontario, Canada, is fully funded by the government. Recently Ontario’s Ministry of Education mandated an induction year, the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP), for all new teachers. This legislation provides an opportunity for Catholic school boards to take the lead and shape creative and effective programs for new teacher induction. The mission of the Catholic school and the vocation of a Catholic teacher give meaning and direction to the new teacher’s professional educational practice. This article first explores some of the pastoral theological concerns that those charged with developing a Catholic approach to NTIP need …

Adopting Change: Relational Flexibility As Vice And Virtue On Mota Island, Vanuatu, Thorgeir Storesund Kolshus
Adopting Change: Relational Flexibility As Vice And Virtue On Mota Island, Vanuatu, Thorgeir Storesund Kolshus
Pacific Studies
On the island of Mota in the Banks Islands, children and adults frequently have their matrilineal and even matrimoiety affiliation, and consequently kin relations, altered and multiplied through various forms of adoption. Most of the 850 Motese count themselves as belonging to several kin groups. This creates personalized kin inventories for each individual. Consequently, an element of choice concerning which relation to emphasize is intrinsic to the Motese kinship system. In this paper, some of the reasons and motivations for these choices are outlined. The traditional flexibility of social relations, with their associated transfer of rights and obligations, also proves …

Culture Clash - How Socio-Technical Factors Contribute To Enterprise Information Systems Interoperability, Alan Fisk
Student Scholarship
Despite increasing need for interoperable enterprise-level information systems, achieving interoperability is persistently problematical. Our work highlights social factors as a major contributor to good design, development, and operating practices. The research was conducted at a technologically sophisticated Fortune 50 company where design artifacts suggested by the literature were found to be in place yet good interoperability between systems was not consistently achieved. The data suggest boundary spanners can facilitate interoperability by promoting shared meanings and mindsets that advance acculturation among cross-functional groups. Findings contrast with enterprise systems interoperability literature, which has focused mainly on technological factors to ensure good design …
