Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind, As It Embraces Bioethics?,, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Jan 2008

Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind, As It Embraces Bioethics?,, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Bioethics evolved from theoretical philosophy into an applied field. Decision makers in health and medical sciences involve bioethicists in decisions and policy making. Although people study environmental ethics, mainly in philosophy programs, environmental ethicists are not involved in decision making. I explore the development of bioethics and environmental ethics, primarily considering the role of law in their development. I ask whether laws and legal opinions encouraging the use of bioethicists in decision making promoted the development of applied bioethics, and correspondingly, whether the absence of laws and opinions promoting environmental ethicists retarded the development of applied environmental ethics. Finally, I …

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler Jan 2008

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler

Animal Law Review

In its current guise, animal rights advocacy imposes few intellectual demands on its proponents, usually requiring little more than a colorful Web site and a college dictionary, the former to construct an audience, and the latter to provide the emotion-laden phrases needed to inflame that audience into supporting stringent penalties for animal-related crimes. Hard thought is not really essential for animal rights advocates to be able to proclaim an end to animal abuse or an allegiance to easing animal suffering, and the standard advocate toolkit simply need not include “rational legal analysis” among the apparatus utilized to rail against mistreatment, …

Presynaptic Depression In Phasic Motor Nerve Terminals And Influence Of 5-Ht On Vesicle Dynamics, A. F. M. Johnstone, S. S. Kellie, Robin L. Cooper Jan 2008

Presynaptic Depression In Phasic Motor Nerve Terminals And Influence Of 5-Ht On Vesicle Dynamics, A. F. M. Johnstone, S. S. Kellie, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Synaptic depression that is induced by electrical stimulation of the glutamatergic neuromuscular junction (NMJ) of the crayfish can be offset by recruitment of vesicles from a presynaptic reserve pool. This recruitment occurs following treatment of the NMJ with serotonin (5-HT), which results in a delay in the onset of synaptic depression induced by high frequency stimulation. The results of this study demonstrate that the releasable vesicles are insufficiently replenished during high frequency stimulation and that the readily releasable pool of vesicles (RRP) can be enhanced by the reserve pool (RP) in the presence of 5-HT. Anatomical visualization of vesicular pools …

Documented Struggles And Triumph: African American Art, Holbrook Lauren Jan 2008

Documented Struggles And Triumph: African American Art, Holbrook Lauren

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The emergence of African Americans as artists began in the Colonial Era with simple portraits. The first African American artist to gain recognition as a portraitist was Joshua Johnston who worked in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The majority of his portraits were of wealthy European American families, who were slave owners (Fig. 1). Johnston was formerly a slave, and as rumors suggests, his former owner was also a portraitist from which Johnston acquired his skills. Interestingly, Johnston did not sign or date any of his works (Lewis 15). It seems as though a suggestion to his name …

Is Hypnosis An Appropriate Conjunctive Treatment For Dental Phobia?, Zach Mccready Jan 2008

Is Hypnosis An Appropriate Conjunctive Treatment For Dental Phobia?, Zach Mccready

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper was written to explore the use of hypnosis as a conjunctive treatment. A brief history of hypnosis from ancient times to modern practice is presented as well as public views, mechanisms, effects, uses, evidence, and dentistry-specific case studies. Hypnosis has been both widely accepted and rejected, and its methods and uses have evolved over time. Current research has found neurophysiological evidence to support the use of hypnosis, and it has been successfully used in various fields of practice. No single indicator can prove the phenomenon and its effectiveness is the result of a complex set of procedures. Hypnosis …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Axon Guidance And Neurite Outgrowth, Lu Anne Velayo Dinglasan Jan 2008

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Axon Guidance And Neurite Outgrowth, Lu Anne Velayo Dinglasan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Axons navigating the complex environment of the developing CNS use extracellular guidance cues to help find their correct synaptic target. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a family of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes, have been shown to regulate axon guidance by degrading extracellular matrix (ECM) or by cleaving guidance cues and their receptors. The olfactory system is an excellent model for studying the role of MMPs in axon guidance due to its capacity for continuous nerve regeneration and topographic maintenance during synaptic targeting. I hypothesized that MMPs may play a role in guiding olfactory sensory neurons to their correct glomerular target by sculpting the …

Serum S-100b As A Potential Biomarker For Meningitis In Febrile Infants: An Interim Analysis, Kelvin C. Lau

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study is to identify the utility of serum S-100B levels as a marker for meningitis in febrile infants younger than 3 months of age. All infants younger than 3 months of age who presented to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and required both a lumbar puncture and venipuncture due to either a confirmed rectal temperature ≥38.0°C or an overall presentation that concerned the responsible physician for possible meningitis and required a lumbar puncture as part of their PED evaluation, were prospectively enrolled. A total of 111 patients participated after a 1.5-year …

Nonobstetric Laparoscopy Versus Laparotomy During Pregnancy: Maternal And Fetal Outcomes, Jeannine Ruby Jan 2008

Nonobstetric Laparoscopy Versus Laparotomy During Pregnancy: Maternal And Fetal Outcomes, Jeannine Ruby

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to compare maternal and fetal outcomes between nonobstetric laparoscopy and laparotomy during pregnancy at Yale-New Haven Hospital. A retrospective chart review was conducted of all nonobstetric intraabdominal surgeries during pregnancy at Yale-New Haven Hospital between 1987 and 2007. Of 159 potential cases, 103 cases (57 laparoscopies, 46 laparotomies) fit the criteria for analysis. Data were collected for the maternal surgical admission, maternal delivery admission, and infant outcome for both groups, and were then analyzed using Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) Version 9.1. There was no difference in age or BMI between groups. Mean gestational age …

Color Multiplexed Single Pattern Sli, Neelima Mandava Jan 2008

Color Multiplexed Single Pattern Sli, Neelima Mandava

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Structured light pattern projection techniques are well known methods of accurately capturing 3-Dimensional information of the target surface. Traditional structured light methods require several different patterns to recover the depth, without ambiguity or albedo sensitivity, and are corrupted by object movement during the projection/capture process. This thesis work presents and discusses a color multiplexed structured light technique for recovering object shape from a single image thus being insensitive to object motion.

This method uses single pattern whose RGB channels are each encoded with a unique subpattern. The pattern is projected on to the target and the reflected image is captured …

Graphic Novels As Contemporary Art? The Perplexing Question Of Content In The High School Art Classroom, Mark Graham Jan 2008

Graphic Novels As Contemporary Art? The Perplexing Question Of Content In The High School Art Classroom, Mark Graham

Faculty Publications

The postmodern condition of contemporary art is characterized by appropriation, layering of styles, recontextualization, interaction between text and image, and a willingness to embrace multiple meanings (Fehr, 1997; Gude, 2004). As the high school teacher contemplates the world of contemporary art and the expanse of visual culture, an insistent question comes to mind: What work of art or artifact of visual culture will provide the richest educational experiences for adolescent students? One viable answer is the graphic novel. Graphic novels have a postmodern flavor in that they are often ironic, playful, self-referential, and contain multiple narratives (Congdon & Blandy, 2003; …

Multiple Captures Of White-Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus): Evidence For Social Structure?, George A. Feldhamer, Leslie B. Rodman, Timothy C. Carter, Eric M. Schauber

Publications

Multiple captures (34 double, 6 triple) in standard Sherman live traps accounted for 6.3% of 1355 captures of Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mice) in forested habitat in southern Illinois, from Oct. 2004 through Oct. 2005. There was a significant positive relationship between both the number and the proportion of multiple captures and estimated monthly population size. Multiple captures were all intraspecific and occurred significantly more often from Nov. through Mar. when animals were not reproductively active, but this was confounded by seasonal changes in abundance. Age/gender distribution of animals in double captures did not differ from that expected from random pairing. …

Effects Of Population Size And Density On Pollinator Visitation, Pollinator Behavior, And Pollen Tube Abundance In Lupinus Perennis, Christopher E. Bernhardt, Randall J. Mitchell, Helen J. Michaels

Biology Faculty Research

Both the number and the density of flowering plants in a population can be important determinants of pollinator abundance and behavior. We report the joint effects of population size and density on pollinator visitation and pollination success for Lupinus perennis (Fabaceae). Focusing on five pairs of populations, we matched one small population (125-800 flowering plants) with one distinctly larger population (1000-3000 flowering plants). In these pairs, population size did not affect pollinator communities or pollination success. All measures of pollination success increased significantly with density. Only bee behavior (number of flowers probed per inflorescence) exhibited a significant interaction of size …

Disturbing Constructions Of Tropical Savannas And The People Who Burn Them, Cynthia Fowler Jan 2008

Disturbing Constructions Of Tropical Savannas And The People Who Burn Them, Cynthia Fowler

Faculty Scholarship

The transition from equilibrium to non-equilibrium models of ecosystems in the biological sciences during the past several decades parallels an evolution in the ways that anthropologists understand culture. Reconceptualizations of ecosystem processes (e.g., disturbance) and units (e.g., landscapes) are apparent in fire science where they have influenced a conversion from the belief that fire is a destructive artificial force to the belief that fire is a controllable natural element. What adjustments have fire scientists made in their understandings of people who ignite fires? Even though fire science literature is voluminous, the sociocultural and biophysical relationships surrounding fire are insufficiently understood. …
