Ledger Of Ann Dewitt Bevier (1762-1834), Early American Estate Manager And Mother, Sally M. Schultz, Joan Hollister

Accounting Historians Journal

The ledger that Ann DeWitt Bevier kept from 1802 until 1813 represents a rich primary source that provides perspective on how a rural agriculturalist and household head interacted with the social and cultural environment in the young American nation. Her accounting records expand the gendered history of economic life by illustrating the life and work of a woman who managed a farm, family household, brick kiln, rental property, and investments in financial instruments. The costs of educating her children were also detailed in the ledger, helping to inform us about the educational opportunities for females in early America.

Whose Business Is Your Pancreas? Potential Privacy Problems In New York City's Mandatory Diabetes Registry, Harold J. Krent, Nicholas Gingo, Monica Kapp, Rachel Moran, Mary Neal, Meghan Paulas, Puneet Sarna, Sarah Suma

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article examines a recent New York City health regulation that mandates the compilation and storage of individual medical data from nearly all diabetics in a centralized registry. The authors distinguish this novel registry from prior health registries and scrutinize its potential to compromise individual privacy. In order to address privacy and other concerns, the authors offer suggestions for changes to the current statutory framework of the registry that will also be useful when considering the creation of similar public health registries in other cities.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated mathematics achievement scores between students working in cooperative learning groups using computer assisted instruction (CAI), and students working alone using CAI in a post-secondary developmental mathematics class. Fifty-one students enrolled in a basic mathematics course participated in the study. Two classes were assigned to work alone using CAI, and two classes were assigned to work in cooperative pairs using CAI. This study was a pre-post-test design, and was administered to all participants to determine their mathematics achievement scores.

A survey using a 5 point Likert Scale further examined if using cooperative learning and CAI would change students' …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 21st century has brought about the transmission of ideas across the world due to the globalization of communication. As such, musicians are influenced by different styles of music from all around the world due to their own travels and the availability of music recordings. This thesis deals with the challenges of analyzing modern music that has been influenced by different genres and therefore does not fit into one preconceived genre of music. Maria Schneider's piece "Hang Gliding" integrates influences of classical, jazz, and Brazilian music. After a discussion of these influences upon her work and her transgression of the …

Mixing Of M Segment Dna Vaccines To Hantaan Virus And Puumala Virus Reduces Their Immunogenicity In Hamsters, Kristin Spik, Catherine Badger, Iacob Mathiessen, Torunn Tjelle, Jay Hooper, Connie Schmaljohn Jan 2008

Mixing Of M Segment Dna Vaccines To Hantaan Virus And Puumala Virus Reduces Their Immunogenicity In Hamsters, Kristin Spik, Catherine Badger, Iacob Mathiessen, Torunn Tjelle, Jay Hooper, Connie Schmaljohn

United States Army: Publications

To determine if DNA vaccines for two hantaviruses causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, Hantaan virus and Puumala virus, are immunogenic when given in combination, we delivered them to hamsters separately or as mixtures by gene gun or by electroporation. Both vaccines elicited neutralizing antibodies when given alone but when theywere delivered as a mixture, antibodies to only one of the two hantaviruses could be detected. In contrast, if the DNAs were given as separate vaccinations to a single animal, responses to both were observed. These studies suggest that the two DNA vaccines will need to be given as separate …

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infection Of The Auricular Cartilage Caused By “High Ear Piercing”: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Henry H. Rowshan, Karen Keith, Dale Baur, Peter Skidmore

United States Army: Publications

Piercing of various parts of the body has gained tremendous popularity among adolescent and adult populations in recent years. There are no exact statistical reports on the number of body piercings being performed in the United States. One study among 481 college students in New York revealed that 42% of men and 60% of women had body piercing. In the past, the majority of complications of ear piercing were associated with the lobule. Torn ear lobes, localized infection, hypertrophic scars, allergic contact dermatitis, and keloid formations were among the most common, with no significant morbidity. However, “high ear piercing,” defined …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

While clozapine is the acknowledged superior pharmacotherapeutic for the treatment of schizophrenia, the side effect profile, which includes potentially fatal complications, limits its usefulness. Central administration of clozapine directly into the brain could circumvent many of the side effect issues due to the dramatic reduction in dose and the limitation of the drug primarily to the CNS. The present study demonstrates that clozapine can be formulated as a stable solution at physiological pH, which does not have in vitro neurotoxic effects at concentrations which may be effective at treating symptoms. Acute central administration improved auditory gating deficits in a mouse …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The sporadic nature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) argues for an environmental link that may drive AD pathogenesis; however, the triggering factors and the period of their action are unknown. Recent studies in rodents have shown that exposure to lead (Pb) during brain development predetermined the expression and regulation of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its amyloidogenic β-amyloid (Aβ) product in old age. Here, we report that the expression of AD-related genes [APP, BACE1 (β-site APP cleaving enzyme 1)] as well as their transcriptional regulator (Sp1) were elevated in aged (23-year-old) monkeys exposed to Pb as infants. Furthermore, developmental exposure …

In Silico Comparison Of Transcript Abundances During Arabidopsis Thaliana And Glycine Max Resistance To Fusarium Virguliforme, Jiazheng Yuan, Mengxia Zhu, David A. Lightfoot, M Javed Iqbal, Jack Y. Yang, Khalid Meksem

Articles

Background
Sudden death syndrome (SDS) of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is an economically important disease, caused by the semi-biotrophic fungus Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines, recently renamed Fusarium virguliforme (Fv). Due to the complexity and length of the soybean-Fusarium interaction, the molecular mechanisms underlying plant resistance and susceptibility to the pathogen are not fully understood. F. virguliforme has a very wide host range for the ability to cause root rot and a very narrow host range for the ability to cause a leaf scorch. Arabidopsis thaliana is a host for many types of phytopathogens including bacteria, fungi, viruses and …

Metaphoric Perspective Theory: Language To Action For The Self, Individuals, Communities, And Culture, Steven Adam Stuglin Jan 2008

Metaphoric Perspective Theory: Language To Action For The Self, Individuals, Communities, And Culture, Steven Adam Stuglin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Metaphoric and tropic language have been a hallmark of human communication throughout the ages. From ancient examples and first attempts at scholarly understanding to postmodern lexicons of metaphor theory in two-dozen disciplines, the understanding of this lingual phenomenon has evolved and grown over arguably the entire length of human history. Communication scholars note the presence and prevalence of tropic language in practice and assert the power that it may have on how humans conceptualize the world around them.

Presented here is complete theory based in these long lines of lingual thought that asserts a direct and powerful relationship between language …

Since 1998, ITF has grown into an internationally recognized organization, supported by donations from extensive number of governments, public and private organizations, companies and individuals that has already surpassed the figure of 330 million USD. ITF contribution to the global fight against landmines and especially to the one in South East Europe (SEE) can not and must not be measured solely by numbers and statistical data. The contribution must be viewed in terms of its input to the restoration of conditions for cultural, social and economic lives of individuals and communities living in or emerging from war-torn society. Stable conditions …
