An Electromyographic Study Of Hip Muscle Activity In Varying Subtalar Joint Positions: Implications For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk, Holly Augustine, Allison Biwer, Greg Jorgensen, Mitch Kary Jan 2008

An Electromyographic Study Of Hip Muscle Activity In Varying Subtalar Joint Positions: Implications For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk, Holly Augustine, Allison Biwer, Greg Jorgensen, Mitch Kary

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if subtalar joint position affects the activity of hip musculature in static standing, and by those results imply a correlation between foot position and ACL injury risk.

Methods: Thirty participants took part in this randomized study in which EMG data were collected during 3 trials of 3 subtalar joint positions on the right lower extremity. Subtalar joint positions included a flat surface to represent a neutral subtalar position, a 5-degree incline rising from lateral to medial, promoting a supinated attitude of the foot, and the third position was on a 5- …

Purinergic Receptors In The Circumvallate Papillae Of Rats, Alana Marselle Montoya Jan 2008

Purinergic Receptors In The Circumvallate Papillae Of Rats, Alana Marselle Montoya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

P2X2 receptors and P2Y4 receptors are ATP-activated cell surface receptors that gate movement of K+, Na+, and Ca2+. We used immunocytochemistry for P2X2 and P2Y4 receptors as well as taste cell type markers to learn if P2X2 immunoreactivity (IR) is present in nerve processes in close apposition to Type II and/or Type III taste cells. We also tested to see if P2Y4 IR is present in Type II and/or Type III taste cells. Our results indicate that P2X2 is present only in intragemmal nerve processes. P2X2-LIR nerve processes form close contacts with Type II and Type III taste cells. P2Y4 …

Organizational Conflict Within The Department Of Homeland Security, M. Katherine Manderson Jan 2008

Organizational Conflict Within The Department Of Homeland Security, M. Katherine Manderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to explain why the Department of Homeland Security had difficulty fulfilling its roles when it was formed, specifically its role as grant administrator. Role theory surmises that conflict arises from unclear expectations, conflicting expectations, and too many roles. This study utilized various public testimonies, legislation, and other government documents to examine how the missions of the twenty-two agencies that were merged together to make up DHS changed. Even though DHS has changed continually over the five years since its existence most employees seem to be clear on the mission of the organization in which they work. However, …

Constitutional Evidence Law, Alex Stein Jan 2008

Constitutional Evidence Law, Alex Stein

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article identifies the causes and consequences of a puzzling asymmetry in constitutional law. Of the three facets of adjudicative factfinding-evidence, procedure, and rules of decision- only two are constitutionalized. Constitutional law regulates procedural and decisional rules, but not whether the evidence that factfinders use is adequate.

Constitutional law regulates procedure through a set of rules that determine a person's power to control the trial by adducing evidence in support of her case and by examining the evidence of her adversary. Constitutional law regulates decisionmaking by setting probability requirements for findings of fact-standards of proof-and by allocating the burdens of …

How An After School Environmental Science Club Can Increase Environmental Knowledge: Awareness And Sensitivity Towards The Environment For Third And Fourth Grade Students, Sandra Joyce Jones Jan 2008

How An After School Environmental Science Club Can Increase Environmental Knowledge: Awareness And Sensitivity Towards The Environment For Third And Fourth Grade Students, Sandra Joyce Jones

Theses Digitization Project

Children today are disconnected from the natural environment around them, sometimes finding it annoying, lacking in excitement, and little use to them. Their attention and focus are spent inside watching TV, playing games on computers or a variety of other electronic devices. The purpose of this project was to see if after-school exposure to an Enirovnmental Science Club on the school grounds can impact student attitudes toward our local environment and to increase these third and fourth grade students' knowledge and awareness of their environment.

A Multiprocessor Parallel Approach To Bit-Parallel Approximate String Matching, Elias Anwar Chibli

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project is to present with empirical results that a parallel design with the use of multiple processors can be successfully applied along with bit-parallel approximate string matching algorithms to solve practical bioinformatics problems. It will demonstrate that nearly optimal speedup can be achieved with a cluster of between two and eight workstations using MPI (Message Passing Interface), directly decreasing the total latency required to perform a string matching problem.

Investigating Racial Disparity At The Detention Decision: The Role Of Respectability, Don L. Kurtz, Tavis Linnemann, Ryan Spohn Jan 2008

Investigating Racial Disparity At The Detention Decision: The Role Of Respectability, Don L. Kurtz, Tavis Linnemann, Ryan Spohn

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

A concern over inequity and the existence of racial disparity of youth served by the juvenile justice system has long been a topic of considerable interest among scholars, policymakers, and court officials. Numerous empirical studies undertaken by academics and various public and private organizations have attempted to shed some light on this phenomenon. Research findings on disproportionate minority contact have hardly been uniform, leaving much of this practice unexplained. This study uses data obtained at the detention decision point over a three-year period examining variance in juvenile case processing related to race. Findings suggest that extra-legal factors influencing the decision …

Methods For Detection Of Matrix Metalloproteinases As Biomarkers In Cardiovascular Disease, Viorica Lopez-Avila, Juliet Spencer Jan 2008

Methods For Detection Of Matrix Metalloproteinases As Biomarkers In Cardiovascular Disease, Viorica Lopez-Avila, Juliet Spencer

Biology Faculty Publications

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) components like collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. While this activity is important for normal development, morphogenesis, and wound healing, deregulation of MMP activity has been implicated in a number of cardiovascular diseases, including congenital heart defects, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure. MMPs are good potential diagnostic indicators of cardiovascular disease, but current detection methods are time consuming and quite laborious. This review will discuss MMP biology, current methods for detection of MMPs from patient samples, and potential new developments in multiplexed analysis of MMPs.

Playing In The Virtual Arena: Avatars, Publicity, And Identity Reconceptualized Through Virtual Worlds And Computer Games, Jon M. Garon Jan 2008

Playing In The Virtual Arena: Avatars, Publicity, And Identity Reconceptualized Through Virtual Worlds And Computer Games, Jon M. Garon

Faculty Scholarship

In many respects, the commercial and social interactions within virtual worlds are essentially the same as those interactions conducted face-to-face or over less engrossing technologies, however, the immersive nature of the virtual world redefines the nature of the experience. Because virtual worlds mimic their bricks-and-mortar counterparts, they exhibit commercial attributes unlike those of plays, television shows, or motion pictures. To the extent that there is commerce conducted within the medium, the historic separation between commercial conduct and expressive speech must be reconceptualized. In the first instance, such legal line drawing will necessarily be done with crude tools, so this article …

Fisheries Research Report No.172 - Identifying Obstacles To Profitably Growing Out Western Rock Lobsters, Roy Melville-Smith, Danielle Johnston, B. Johnston, N. J. Thomson

Fisheries Research Reports

A Report Prepared for the Aquaculture Development Council.

The cost of growing out western rock lobsters from pueruli to marketable-sized lobsters has been modeled from available information. The model uses different scenarios of survival rates, marketing weights, market prices, feed costs, puerulus prices, labour costs, puerulus compensation costs, discount rates and capital costs. The sensitivity of estimated profitability to various input costs and rock lobster prices was assessed by estimating the impact of changes on the estimates of net present value (NPV) internal rate of return (IRR) and benefit:cost ratio. Importantly, the aim of the study was to identify key …

“I Will Contend With Them That Contendeth With Thee”: The Divine Warrior In Jacob’S Speech Of 2 Nephi 6–10, Daniel Belnap Jan 2008

“I Will Contend With Them That Contendeth With Thee”: The Divine Warrior In Jacob’S Speech Of 2 Nephi 6–10, Daniel Belnap

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

At the time Jacob gave his speech in 2 Nephi 6–10, the Nephites had already been driven from two lands of inheritance and felt an ongoing concern of being cut off from God’s promises. Belnap illustrates that Jacob’s speech answers these concerns through emphasizing and expounding on the covenantal relationship made possible by God acting as the Divine Warrior. Jacob quotes Isaiah passages in his discourse and in some instances makes his own additions to emphasize important aspects. He illustrates how the Divine Warrior provides the hardships, knowledge, and power for an individual to become a divine warrior, and he …
