Evaluation Of Serotonin As A Feedback Inhibitor Of Lactation In The Bovine, L. L. Hernandez, C. M. Stiening, J. B. Wheelock, L. H. Baumgard, Anne M. Parkhurst, R. J. Collier Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Serotonin As A Feedback Inhibitor Of Lactation In The Bovine, L. L. Hernandez, C. M. Stiening, J. B. Wheelock, L. H. Baumgard, Anne M. Parkhurst, R. J. Collier

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Serotonin (5-HT), a neurotransmitter synthesized from tryptophan, has been proposed as a feedback inhibitor of lactation. We determined that the gene coding for tryptophan hydroxylase 1, the rate-limiting enzyme for 5-HT synthesis, is expressed in bovine mammary epithelial cells in vitro and is upregulated by prolactin. In addition, 5-HT reduced the expression of α-lactalbumin and casein genes in vitro. Furthermore, inhibiting 5-HT synthesis with p-chlorophenylalanine or blocking the 5-HT receptor with methysergide (METH) increased milk protein gene expression. We then evaluated effects of intramammary 5-HT or METH infusion on production and milk composition in 6 multiparous Holstein cows. Cows …

Intercultural Books In Practice, Maire Mhic Mhathuna, Una Hill Jan 2008

Intercultural Books In Practice, Maire Mhic Mhathuna, Una Hill

Articles

This paper examines the practical use of intercultural and multicultural books in Early Years settings in the Irish context. Questionnaires were sent to seventy early years’ settings in the Dublin region, focusing on the criteria they used for selecting such books. These responses indicated that staff viewed inclusion, the story, age appropriateness, illustrations and the language of the books as being important. The practitioners’ responses are compared with the views of authors on diversity issues and similarities and differences identified. Overall there was a greater emphasis on children in the practitioners’ survey while the authors focused on issues. A list …

A Synthesised Knowledge Mapping Framework To Embed A Km Strategy Using Topic Maps And Wikis: The Tao Of Wiki, Colman A.J. Mcmahon Jan 2008

A Synthesised Knowledge Mapping Framework To Embed A Km Strategy Using Topic Maps And Wikis: The Tao Of Wiki, Colman A.J. Mcmahon

Dissertations

Just getting started with knowledge management can be difficult enough for many organisations, however the real challenge is actually how to embed the new practices. The expression "Success is a journey, not a destination" is particularly apt for KM. This research presents findings from stakeholder analyses carried out in an Irish government agency. The agency has been on its KM journey for nearly four years and has attempted to implement a comprehensive and full-scale strategy. The findings indicate that KM practices have not yet become fully embedded in the organisation. This research uncovers some of the reasons why not. In …

The Effects Of Thawing Procedure And Supplementation On The Motility And Viability Of Frozen-Thawed Boar Semen, B. D. Whitaker, S. Clark, Z. Crouse, W. Martin, J. W. Knight Jan 2008

The Effects Of Thawing Procedure And Supplementation On The Motility And Viability Of Frozen-Thawed Boar Semen, B. D. Whitaker, S. Clark, Z. Crouse, W. Martin, J. W. Knight

Virginia Journal of Science

The effect of two thawing procedures on frozen boar semen and supplementations to the fertilization media were studied. Frozen boar semen was thawed using either Percoll gradient or phosphate buffered saline (PBS)procedure. Supplementations were 1.0 mM L-glutamate, 1.0 mM N-acetylcysteine (NAC) , and 1.0 mM NAC-amide (NACA). Spermatozoa were analyzed for forward progressive motility (FPM) and viability every 0.5 h for 3 .0 h post-thawing. There were significantly (P < 0.05) higher numbers of viable (76.0 ± 5.1 %) and FPM (30 .0 ± 2.4%) spermatozoa at 3.0 h post thawing using the PBS procedure compared to the Percoll gradient thawed spermatozoa (65.0 ± 3.9%; 10.0 ± 4.5 %, respectively). Supplementation of 1.0 mM L-glutamate, 1.0 mM NAC, or 1.0 mM NACA had no significant effect on spermatozoa viability regardless of the time post-thaw.Supplementation of 1.0 mM L-glutamate, 1.0 mM NAC , or 1.0 mM NACA had no significant effect on FPM up to 1.0 h post-thaw. Spermatozoa with no supplementation or 1.0 mM L-glutamate had significantly higher (P < 0.05) FPM compared to the 1.0 mM NAC and 1.0 mM NACA supplemented groups at 1.5, 2.0, 2 .5, and 3.0 h post-thaw. There was no significant difference between no supplementation or 1.0 mM L-glutamate on FPM regardless of the time post-thaw. There was no significant difference between 1.0 mM NAC or 1.0 mM NACA on FPM regardless of the time post-thaw. These results indicate that thawing procedure has an effect on spermatozoa viability and FPM but supplementation does not have an effect on the overall viability of spermatozoa during thawing, but may reduce FPM.

Fluid Dynamics Of Feeding Behaviour In White-Spotted Bamboo Sharks, Sandra Nauwelaerts, Cheryl Wilga, George V. Lauder, Christopher P. Sanford Jan 2008

Fluid Dynamics Of Feeding Behaviour In White-Spotted Bamboo Sharks, Sandra Nauwelaerts, Cheryl Wilga, George V. Lauder, Christopher P. Sanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Although the motor control of feeding is presumed to be generally conserved, some fishes are capable of modulating the feeding behaviour in response to prey type and or prey size. This led to the ʻfeeding modulation hypothesisʼ, which states that rapid suction strikes are pre-programmed stereotyped events that proceed to completion once initiated regardless of sensory input. If this hypothesis holds true, successful strikes should be indistinguishable from unsuccessful strikes owing to a lack of feedback control in specialized suction feeding fishes. The hydrodynamics of suction feeding in white-spotted bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium plagiosum) was studied in three behaviours: …

Suction Generation In White-Spotted Bamboo Sharks Chiloscyllium Plagiosum, Cheryl D. Wilga, Christopher P. Sanford Jan 2008

Suction Generation In White-Spotted Bamboo Sharks Chiloscyllium Plagiosum, Cheryl D. Wilga, Christopher P. Sanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

After the divergence of chondrichthyans and teleostomes, the structure of the feeding apparatus also diverged leading to alterations in the suction mechanism. In this study we investigated the mechanism for suction generation during feeding in whitespotted bamboo sharks, Chiloscyllium plagiosum and compared it with that in teleosts. The internal movement of cranial elements and pressure in the buccal, hyoid and pharyngeal cavities that are directly responsible for suction generation was quantified using sonomicrometry and pressure transducers. Backward stepwise multiple linear regressions were used to explore the relationship between expansion and pressure, accounting for 60–96% of the variation in pressure among …

Grabowski, Barney Luttberg, John L. Orrock, Scott D. Peacor, Evan L. Preisser, Oswald J. Schmitz, Geoffrey C. Trussell

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Predator effects on prey dynamics are conventionally studied by measuring changes in prey abundance attributed to consumption by predators. We revisit four classic examples of predator–prey systems often cited in textbooks and incorporate subsequent studies of nonconsumptive effects of predators (NCE), defined as changes in prey traits (e.g., behavior, growth, development) measured on an ecological time scale. Our review revealed that NCE were integral to explaining lynx–hare population dynamics in boreal forests, cascading effects of top predators in Wisconsin lakes, and cascading effects of killer whales and sea otters on kelp forests in nearshore marine habitats. The relative roles of …

Cis-Regulatory Organization Of The Pax6 Gene In The Ascidian Ciona Intestinalis, Steven Q. Irvine, Vera C. Fonseca, Michael A. Zompa, Rajee Antony Jan 2008

Cis-Regulatory Organization Of The Pax6 Gene In The Ascidian Ciona Intestinalis, Steven Q. Irvine, Vera C. Fonseca, Michael A. Zompa, Rajee Antony

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The Pax6 gene has attracted intense research interest due to its apparently important role in the development of eyes and the central nervous system (CNS) in many animal groups. Pax6 is also of interest for comparative genomics since it has not been duplicated in tetrapods, making for a direct orthology between the Ciona intestinalis gene CiPax6 and Pax6 in mammals. CiPax6 has been shown to be expressed in the anterior brain, caudal nerve cord, and in parts of the brain associated with the photoreceptive ocellus. This information was extended here using in-situ hybridization, and shows that CiPax6 transcripts mark the …

The Disappearing Dilemma: Why Agency Principles Should Now Take Center Stage In Retaliation Cases, Sandra F. Sperino Jan 2008

The Disappearing Dilemma: Why Agency Principles Should Now Take Center Stage In Retaliation Cases, Sandra F. Sperino

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad v. White, the Supreme Court soundly rejected the idea that the plaintiff must establish that conduct rose to the level of an adverse employment action to constitute retaliation under Title VII. This Article posits that, in an effort to square Burlington with other Title VII agency jurisprudence, the courts will be required to re-import the concept of tangible employment action into decisions regarding whether an employer is vicariously liable for actions committed by supervisors.

While the lower courts appear to recognize that agency issues come into play when retaliation is conducted by co-workers, …

Standing In The Shadows, Jason Haffner Jan 2008

Standing In The Shadows, Jason Haffner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Standing in the Shadows is a collection of short-stories that showcases the inner workings of the modern American family. Each of these six stories examines families, in one capacity or another, dealing with ups and downs, love and hatred, sadness and happiness, and everything in between. At the heart of these stories are the relationships between people, some affected by sadness and tragedy, others torn apart by secrets, all trying to cope and exist in a world full of conflict and difficulties. The characters in this selection deal with shortcomings--shortcomings of others and of themselves--while forced to overcome obstacles in …

Perceptions Of Reality, Matthew Dombrowski Jan 2008

Perceptions Of Reality, Matthew Dombrowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis explores the relationship between the human psyche and the perception of reality through the use of computer generated media. In a society in which we are bombarded with multimedia technology, we must look inside our selves for a true understanding of our past and memories. Rather than it acting as an escape from reality, my art becomes an opening for truth in reality.

Pitiful Creatures, Shaun Wightman Jan 2008

Pitiful Creatures, Shaun Wightman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By focusing on character, humor, and loose narrative, I create a world full of quirky, pitiful creatures that blur the lines between illustration and "Fine Art". Inspired by golden age cartoons, Pop-Surrealism, and late 50's commercial art, I make work that speaks of the awkwardness of human emotion while keeping a "tongue in cheek" attitude about everyday life. This work is expressed through illustration, animation, sculpture, and a lot of sarcasm.

Journey, Suzann Martinsen Jan 2008

Journey, Suzann Martinsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In my drawings and animation, I create a representation of a culture that is instilled in me, yet foreign. The work is inspired from a childlike perspective to depict a personal primitive experience with the Korean culture. The subtleties of the animations are meant to reflect the quiet nature of Asian paintings and to allow the viewer to experience and interpret it as they choose. I want others to see without hearing words in an already noisy world.

Exploring Permanent Property: An Exploration Of The Tattoo Acquisition In The Midwest, Tiffany Cross Jan 2008

Exploring Permanent Property: An Exploration Of The Tattoo Acquisition In The Midwest, Tiffany Cross

McNair Scholars Journal

America has become a society in which almost anything can be bought or sold. This study, through both the ethnological comparison of contemporary tattoo acquisition research and ethnographic fieldwork in Graylin, Michigan, analyzes the increase in the acquisition of tattoos within the past two decades. Specifically, this study focuses on tattoo acquisition in the Midwest and tests whether the expectations gained from the literature are significantly relevant to this region of the United States. Through interview, survey, and participant observation, the goal of research ultimately is to analyze cultural transmission and trends. In past studies, the focus has been on …

Role-Play: An Often Misused Active Learning Strategy, Stephanie Nickerson Jan 2008

Role-Play: An Often Misused Active Learning Strategy, Stephanie Nickerson

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Role-play is a special kind of case study, in which there is an explicit situation established with students playing specific roles, spontaneously saying and doing what they understand their “character” would, in that situation. Role-plays differ from other case studies in the immediacy of the experience. Students find themselves in the role-play. In a case study, they read about situations and characters. One of the reasons role-play can work so well is because of the power of placing oneself in another’s shoes. This provides opportunities for learning in both the affective domain, where emotions and values are involved, as well …
