Evolution Of Picornaviruses: Impacts Of Recombination And Selection, Nicole Noel Lewis-Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

Picornaviruses are responsible for some of the most common and debilitating diseases affecting humans and animals worldwide. The objectives of this dissertation research were (1) estimate phylogenetic relationships among 11 picornavirus genera and within three species: foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV: Aphthovirus) which afflicts cloven-hoofed animals and human rhinovirus A and B (HRV: Enterovirus) which cause the common cold; (2) better understand the impact recombination has on genomic organization and evolution; (3) characterize where positive and purifying selection has occurred in proteins and how selection has influenced phenotype. The dissertation includes four studies. The first chapter provides an overview of the …

Hair, Feces And Breath Isotope Fractionation In Alpacas (Llama Pacos), Llamas (Llama Glama) And Guanacos (Llama Guanacoe) From Bolivia And Chile, Lino Constancio Lopez Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determinate carbon and nitrogen isotope fractionation in Bolivian and Chilean alpaca, llama and guanaco, hair, breath, plasma and feces. We also wanted to determine forage selection for these camelids using stable isotope technology. From the data, niche feeding and diet selection habits will determinate based on fecal composition. Bolivian sites were located near the high snow Altiplano Mountains at Tomarapi, Sajama, and at the Technical University Oruro's research center at Condoriri, Bolivia. Chilean samples were collected at INIA's (Instituto Nacional de Investigacion Agropecuaria) Kampenaike Research Station, Punta Arenas, Chile. Bolivian alpacas and llamas were 3 …

In Vivo Trafficking Of Endogenous Opioid Receptors, Yulin Wang, Elisabeth J. Van Bockstaele, Lee-Yuan Liu-Chen Nov 2008

In Vivo Trafficking Of Endogenous Opioid Receptors, Yulin Wang, Elisabeth J. Van Bockstaele, Lee-Yuan Liu-Chen

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Studies on trafficking of endogenous opioid receptors in vivo are subject of the present review. In many of the in vivo studies, the use of semi-quantitative immuno-electron microscopy is the approach of choice. Endogenous opioid receptors display differential subcellular distributions with μ opioid receptor (MOPR) being mostly present on the plasma membrane and δ- and κ-opioid receptors (DOPR and KOPR, respectively) having a significant intracellular pool. Etorphine and DAMGO cause endocytosis of the MOPR, but morphine does not, except in some dendrites. Interestingly, chronic inflammatory pain and morphine treatment promote trafficking of intracellular DOPR to the cell surface which may …

Specific Compartmentalization Of Iga Ascs In Mouse Salivary Glands Via Differential Expression Of Chemokines And Chemokine Receptors, Yuet Ching Law Nov 2008

Specific Compartmentalization Of Iga Ascs In Mouse Salivary Glands Via Differential Expression Of Chemokines And Chemokine Receptors, Yuet Ching Law

Theses and Dissertations

The mucosal system, which forms a barrier between internal organ systems and the external environment, is frequently exposed to pathogenic microorganisms. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibody secreting cells (ASCs) localize in the lamina propria, and produce IgA antibodies which help protect mucosal tissues. The concept of a common mucosal immune system in which IgA ASCs have the ability to populate any mucosal site has been proposed (1, 2). However, recent research has suggested that IgA ASCs primed in different mucosal sites might possess different sets of chemokine receptors, and therefore migrate specifically to particular mucosal locations (3). In this study, the …

Great Apes And Other Stories, Ryan Zimmerman Nov 2008

Great Apes And Other Stories, Ryan Zimmerman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Thoreau said that, "in wildness is the preservation of the world." The characters in the following collection of stories might be tempted to rephrase that statement to read, "in wildness is the preservation of the criminal world." These stories feature wild places where the natural world often is not as dangerous as the people who seek refuge in the borderlands between wilderness and civilization.

Many crime stories take place in cities-for good reason. More people usually equates with more crime. However, anywhere that people choose to live, crime is sure to follow-crime against each other, crime against themselves, and even …

Ceramide Kinase And Ceramide-1-Phosphate, Dayanjan Wijesinghe Nov 2008

Ceramide Kinase And Ceramide-1-Phosphate, Dayanjan Wijesinghe

Theses and Dissertations

Ceramide-1-phosphate (C1P) is a bioactive lipid that has been implicated in many biological processes. Our laboratory has conclusively demonstrated its role in inflammation via activation of cPLA2α. The only known enzyme to date responsible for direct synthesis of C1P is ceramide kinase. Very little was known about this enzyme in terms of its enzyme kinetics and substrate specificity. As CERK is an enzyme that acts on membrane lipids, its kinetics cannot be studied using standard bulk dilutions methods. Thus we developed a surface dilution approach using Triton X 100 mixed micelles for studying the kinetics of CERK. We discovered that …

Ecological Coexistence: A Nature Retreat And Education Center On Rattlesnake Key, Terra Ceia, Florida, Richard F. Peterika Nov 2008

Ecological Coexistence: A Nature Retreat And Education Center On Rattlesnake Key, Terra Ceia, Florida, Richard F. Peterika

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Applied ecology has been used to design communities around the world; however suburban neighborhoods in west central Florida do not usually utilize existing or potential ecological function as a modeling parameter or success measure.

Since the end of the great depression, developments in the Tampa Bay Area have displaced many wetland and upland natural communities. Private ownership and development of sensitive natural lands have restricted their use and hampered the functional longevity of important ecological systems in this area. These displaced areas have historically functioned as habitat for many types of animal life, have passively conveyed nutrient loads, and have …

Daughter Of The Moon And Other Stories, Shannon Zimmerman Nov 2008

Daughter Of The Moon And Other Stories, Shannon Zimmerman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

All of the protagonists in this collection of stories are starving. The world around them buzzes with the electric hum of modern society, a siren song that tempts these girls and women with the promise of love, opportunity, affluence, and dreams. Instead, they find themselves lost somehow, left behind, victims of circumstance, confused by dysfunctional families, and romanced by the media. They no longer know themselves, and stumble in their quest for happiness. They are lured into competitions with imaginary adversaries, and sometimes lose. The less control they have in their own lives, the more desperate they become, often going …

New Approaches To Ecologically Based, Designed Urban Plant Communities In Britain: Do These Have Any Relevance In The United States?, James D. Hitchmough Nov 2008

New Approaches To Ecologically Based, Designed Urban Plant Communities In Britain: Do These Have Any Relevance In The United States?, James D. Hitchmough

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This paper discusses the reasoning behind the development of a new approach to designed urban planting with grasses, forbs and geophytes that has been undertaken at the University of Sheffield over the past 15 years. The resulting plant communities are the result of applying contemporary ecological science to planting design, to maximize their sustainability whilst at the same time meeting the aesthetic and functional needs of the users of urban public landscapes. The geographical origin of the plants used in these communities varies according to the physical, ecological and cultural context in which they are to be used. In some …

Conserving Biodiversity In Urbanizing Areas: Nontraditional Views From A Bird’S Perspective, John Marzluff, Amanda Rodewald Nov 2008

Conserving Biodiversity In Urbanizing Areas: Nontraditional Views From A Bird’S Perspective, John Marzluff, Amanda Rodewald

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

We review common population and community-level responses of wildlife to urbanization, and discuss how: (1) the amount and configuration of land cover and land use, and (2) the alteration of resources (e.g., type of vegetation, presence of food and water) and processes (e.g., natural disturbance regimes, species interactions, intensity of human recreation) within built environments influence animals, with special emphasis on birds. Although each landscape presents unique opportunities and constraints, we suggest that all urban areas have the potential to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. The ecological value of urban areas may be promoted if planners, managers, and homeowners …

Urban Principles For Ecological Landscape Design And Maintenance: Scientific Fundamentals, Mary L. Cadenasso, Steward T. A. Pickett Nov 2008

Urban Principles For Ecological Landscape Design And Maintenance: Scientific Fundamentals, Mary L. Cadenasso, Steward T. A. Pickett

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban ecology is a rapidly developing scientific discipline with great relevance to sustainable city design and management. Though several frameworks have been proposed in the last 10 years, urban ecology, as yet, has no complete, mature theory. There are, however, general principles emerging that may facilitate the development of such a theory. In the meantime, these principles can serve as useful guides for ecological landscape design and maintenance. This paper aims to use the principles to conceptually frame a series of papers to follow in this special issue. The main ecological principles concerning cities are that: 1) Cities are ecosystems; …

Exploring The Mialome Of Ticks: An Annotated Catalogue Of Midgut Transcripts From The Hard Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae), Jennifer M. Anderson, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Jesus G. Valenzuela

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Ticks are obligate blood feeders. The midgut is the first major region of the body where blood and microbes ingested with the blood meal come in contact with the tick's internal tissues. Little is known about protein expression in the digestive tract of ticks. In this study, for analysis of global gene expression during tick attachment and feeding, we generated and sequenced 1,679 random transcripts (ESTs) from cDNA libraries from the midguts of female ticks at varying stages of feeding.

Results: Sequence analysis of the 1,679 ESTs resulted in the identification of 835 distinct transcripts, from these, a total …
