The Impact Of The American Community Band On Music Education, Rodney L. Miller Jan 2008

The Impact Of The American Community Band On Music Education, Rodney L. Miller

ETD Archive

Community bands in the United States have increased in numbers since the late twentieth century. At the same time, music education in American schools has remained strong even with the serious funding issues that face many music programs in nearly every state. The purpose of this study was to find what impact American community bands have on music education. Eight directors/executive directors from eight community bands were interviewed with 37 questions. It was determined that the impact that American community bands have on music education is positive and far reaching but that more could be done with further research to …

Subverting Blackface And The Epistemology Of American Identity In John Berryman's 77 Dream Songs, Amy Rosby Jan 2008

Subverting Blackface And The Epistemology Of American Identity In John Berryman's 77 Dream Songs, Amy Rosby

ETD Archive

John Berryman has been criticized for his employment of white performance of blackface minstrelsy's conventions and dialect in 77 Dream Songs because of the complex history of this tradition of blackface's problematic performance of racial fantasy and because of Berryman's designation as a white, confessional poet. However, when one observes the history of this tradition of minstrelsy, its initial reception, its "transcodification" into the white American racial ideology, and subsequent scholarly analyses of its implications, it is evident that Berryman creates an anti-model of minstrelsy which consequently becomes a minstrelsy of "whiteness." Through this anti-model, which shifts the public gaze …

The Effects Of Opiod And Benzodiazepine Weaning On Cognitive Ability In The Context Of A Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program, Daniel M. Fishman Jan 2008

The Effects Of Opiod And Benzodiazepine Weaning On Cognitive Ability In The Context Of A Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program, Daniel M. Fishman

ETD Archive

Pain is a component of many disease processes however in some cases, when pain becomes a chronic condition it can become the problem itself. It can be a debilitating condition which is emotionally and economically costly to the individual, his or her family, and societies as a whole. Theories of pain have evolved over the last several decades to incorporate a Biopsychosocial Model of Pain. The biological portion of the model relies on The Gate Control Theory of Pain, although some emerging research points to a Neuromatrix model. As is suggested by the term, Biopsychosocial Model of Pain, the biologic …

Mosimann, Vanessa Stella, Daniela Pavoni, Gregory A. Buck, Paul Fawcett, Silvio M. Zanata, Lucia Noronha, Marco Krieger, Claudia Nunes Duarte Dos Santos

Microbiology and Immunology Publications

Dengue virus (DENV) causes a self-limiting fever (DF) or severe hemorrhagic fever/shock-syndrome (DHF/DSS). Recently, clinical profile of DENV infection is changing, and neurological manifestations are becoming frequent. We previously demonstrated that mutations on E and NS3 proteins may account for DENV neurovirulence for mice. To validate the involvement of the observed mutations in the appearance of neurovirulent viral phenotypes, we constructed cDNA infectious clones encompassing the observed mutations. Aiming to determine host response to infection with neurovirulent and parental strains of DENV-1, we used a Mus musculus biochip (Virginia Commonwealth University) encompassing whole mouse genome. Newborn Swiss mice were infected …

Impaired Clearance Of Methotrexate In Organic Anion Transporter 3 (Slc22a8) Knockout Mice: A Gender Specific Impact Of Reduced Folates, Adam L. Vanwert, Douglas H. Sweet Jan 2008

Impaired Clearance Of Methotrexate In Organic Anion Transporter 3 (Slc22a8) Knockout Mice: A Gender Specific Impact Of Reduced Folates, Adam L. Vanwert, Douglas H. Sweet

Pharmaceutics Publications

Purpose

To elucidate the role of the renal basolateral transporter, Oat3, in the disposition of methotrexate.

Materials and Methods

Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing mouse Oat3 were used to determine kinetics and specificity of inhibition of methotrexate transport. Methotrexate clearance was then examined in vivo in wildtype and Oat3 knockout mice.

Results

NSAIDs, ß-lactams, and uremic toxins inhibited mOat3-mediated methotrexate uptake by 70–100%, while folate, leucovorin, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate inhibited transport by 25–50%. A Km of 60.6±9.3 μM for methotrexate transport was determined. Oat3 knockout mice exhibited reduced methotrexate-to-inulin clearance ratios versus wildtype. Male wildtype mice, but not knockouts or …

The Microbial Mimic Poly Ic Induces Durable And Protective Cd4+ T Cell Immunity Together With A Dendritic Cell Targeted Vaccine, Christine Trumpfheller, Marina Caskey, Godwin W. Nchinda Jan 2008

The Microbial Mimic Poly Ic Induces Durable And Protective Cd4+ T Cell Immunity Together With A Dendritic Cell Targeted Vaccine, Christine Trumpfheller, Marina Caskey, Godwin W. Nchinda

Publications

CD4+ Th1 type immunity is implicated in resistance to global infectious diseases. To improve the efficacy of T cell immunity induced by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccines, we are developing a protein-based approach that directly harnesses the function of dendritic cells (DCs) in intact lymphoid tissues. Vaccine proteins are selectively delivered to DCs by antibodies to DEC-205/CD205, a receptor for antigen presentation. We find that polyriboinosinic: polyribocytidylic acid (poly IC) independently serves as an adjuvant to allow a DC-targeted protein to induce protective CD4+ T cell responses at a mucosal surface, the airway. After two doses of DEC-targeted, …

The Efficacy Of Dna Vaccination Is Enhanced In Mice By Targeting The Encoded Protein To Dendritic Cells, Godwin W. Nchinda, Janelle Kuroiwa, Margarita Oks Jan 2008

The Efficacy Of Dna Vaccination Is Enhanced In Mice By Targeting The Encoded Protein To Dendritic Cells, Godwin W. Nchinda, Janelle Kuroiwa, Margarita Oks

Publications

DNA vaccines promote an immune response by providing antigen-encoding DNA to the recipient, but the efficacy of such vaccines needs improving. Many approaches have considerable potential but currently induce relatively weak immune responses despite multiple high doses of DNA vaccine. Here, we asked whether targeting vaccine antigens to DCs would increase the immunity and protection that result from DNA vaccines. To determine this, we generated a DNA vaccine encoding a fusion protein comprised of the vaccine antigen and a single-chain Fv antibody (scFv) specific for the DC-restricted antigen-uptake receptor DEC205. Following vaccination of mice, the vaccine antigen was expressed selectively …

An Ifn-Γ-Il-18 Signaling Loop Accelerates Memory Cd8+ T Cell Proliferation, Yochiko Iwai, Hiroaki Hemmi, Olga Mizenina Jan 2008

An Ifn-Γ-Il-18 Signaling Loop Accelerates Memory Cd8+ T Cell Proliferation, Yochiko Iwai, Hiroaki Hemmi, Olga Mizenina

Publications

Rapid proliferation is one of the important features of memory CD8+ T cells, ensuring rapid clearance of reinfection. Although several cytokines such as IL-15 and IL-7 regulate relatively slow homeostatic proliferation of memory T cells during the maintenance phase, it is unknown how memory T cells can proliferate more quickly than naïve T cells upon antigen stimulation. To examine antigen-specific CD8+ T cell proliferation in recall responses in vivo, we targeted a model antigen, ovalbumin(OVA), to DEC-205+ dendritic cells (DCs) with a CD40 maturation stimulus. This led to the induction of functional memory CD8+ T cells, …

Selective Delivery Of Β Cell Antigen To Dendritic Cells In Vivo Leads To Deletion And Tolerance Of Autoreactive Cd8+ T Cells In Nod Mice, Arunika Mukhopadhaya, Tadashi Hanafusa, Irene Jarchum Jan 2008

Selective Delivery Of Β Cell Antigen To Dendritic Cells In Vivo Leads To Deletion And Tolerance Of Autoreactive Cd8+ T Cells In Nod Mice, Arunika Mukhopadhaya, Tadashi Hanafusa, Irene Jarchum

Publications

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease resulting from defects in central and peripheral tolerance and characterized by T cell-mediated destruction of islet β cells. Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells, reactive to β cell antigens, are required for T1D development in the NOD mouse model of the disease, and CD8+ T cells specific for β cell antigens can be detected in the peripheral blood of T1D patients. It has been evident that in nonautoimmune-prone mice, dendritic cells (DCs) present model antigens in a tolerogenic manner in the steady state, e.g., in the absence of infection, and cause T …

Intimate Moments Among The Dead: Death And Time In The Work Of Loren Eiseley, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2008

Intimate Moments Among The Dead: Death And Time In The Work Of Loren Eiseley, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

This essay is written in the shadow of the wisdom of Loren Eiseley. The source of the thought herein is drawn from Eiseley's unique vision of time and the relational ambiguities of the living and the dead, or at the very least these notes are haunted by the penetrating and often dark insights of this inveterate bone hunter and very human scholar of man's origins. What follows, then, is written against the background reference to what is arguable a unique approach and singular sensitivity to the world of the dead in the writings of Loren Eiseley.

The Geography Of Open Dumps In Rural Appalachia, Bj Jones Jan 2008

The Geography Of Open Dumps In Rural Appalachia, Bj Jones

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The dumping of waste into the environment has plagued the mountains of Rural Appalachia for decades. Tire, cars, appliances, and drug producing materials routinely are illegally disposed of via open dumps. The purpose of this research is to reveal the motives of the damaging open dumpsites that damage the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. The states of Kentucky and West Virginia were analyzed through the use of GIS and descriptive statistics. The distance to refuse centers and application of disposal fees are the leading factors that result to the use of open dumps.

Ecology, Reproduction And Morphometrics Of The Common Ribbonsnake (Thamnophis Sauritus) And Eastern Gartersnake (Thamnophis Sirtalis) In West Virginia, Noah Mccoard

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Two species of gartersnakes, Thamnophis, are found in West Virginia. Thamnophis sauritus , a semi-arboreal and semi-aquatic species, is listed as very rare and imperiled (S2) by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) while the other Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, a terrestrial species, is secure (S5). During the summer of 2007, I traveled to 53 counties in West Virginia searching for habitat and these two species.Several Thamnophis sirtalis were found in a variety of habitats throughout the state, but only three Thamnophis sauritus were found. Reproductive aspects were compared between the two species by holding gravid females in captivity …

Assembly And Function Of Myosin Ii On Ultraviolet/Ozone Patterned Trimethylchlorosilane Substrates, Madhukar B. Kolli Jan 2008

Assembly And Function Of Myosin Ii On Ultraviolet/Ozone Patterned Trimethylchlorosilane Substrates, Madhukar B. Kolli

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The exploration of biomolecular motors in nanotechnological applications has generated much interest in the scientific community. Although the recent progress has been very promising, several requirements have yet to be fulfilled in order for motor proteins to be useful in nanotechnological applications. Here, we present a simple method for patterning myosin II on a microstructured surface. Our findings indicate that UV/ozone treatment can be used to alter the hydrophobicity of trimethyl-chloro-silane (TMCS) coated glass surfaces, to alter protein binding, and effectively produce localized motor activity. Taken together, these data suggest that photoreactive patterning may be useful for the selective localization …

Effects Of Aging And Gender On Regulators Of Muscle Adaptation In F344/Bn Rat Model, Satyanarayana Paturi Jan 2008

Effects Of Aging And Gender On Regulators Of Muscle Adaptation In F344/Bn Rat Model, Satyanarayana Paturi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging. Here we examine the effects of aging and gender on the regulation of molecules believed to regulate muscle growth and adaptation in the F344/BN rat. In male animals, soleus and EDL muscle/body weight ratio declined continuously with aging while muscle atrophy in female animals plateaued at 26-months and remained constant thereafter. Aging increased the phosphorylation of protein kinase-B (Akt) and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the female but not male soleus muscle. This finding was associated with the attenuation of muscle atrophy observed in female …

West Virginia Streamside Salamander Guilds And Environmental Variables With An Emphasis On Pseudotriton Ruber Ruber, Kathryn Rebecca Pawlik Jan 2008

West Virginia Streamside Salamander Guilds And Environmental Variables With An Emphasis On Pseudotriton Ruber Ruber, Kathryn Rebecca Pawlik

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian distributions are greatly influenced by environmental variables, due in part to semi-permeable skin which makes amphibians susceptible to both desiccation and toxin absorption. This study was conducted to determine which streamside salamander species were sympatric and how environmental variables may have influenced habitat choices. One hundred sixty streams were surveyed throughout 55 counties in West Virginia during the summer of 2007. At each site, a 10 m 2 quadrat was established around a central aquatic habitat. While surveying, I looked under natural cover objects, in vegetation, and through leaf litter. I recorded species, cover object type, and location on …

A Continued Study Of The Use Of Created Ponds For Amphibian Breeding In Fragmented Forested Areas, Amy Elizabeth Schneider Jan 2008

A Continued Study Of The Use Of Created Ponds For Amphibian Breeding In Fragmented Forested Areas, Amy Elizabeth Schneider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian populations are declining worldwide due to factors such as habitat degradation, fragmentation and destruction. I conducted a study to explore the use of created ponds in a forested habitat by breeding amphibians, specifically Rana sylvatica and Ambystoma maculatum. The objectives were to examine the movement of these animals after leaving the ponds, the survival and movement of juveniles, how both respond to fragmentation, and how similar the created ponds were to natural ones. Nine ponds were constructed in December 2003 in the MeadWestvaco Wildlife Ecosystem Research Forest (MWERF) in Randolph County, West Virginia. All trapped amphibians were measured and …

The Natural History And Distribution Of The Mountain Earthsnake (Virginia Valeriae Pulchra) In West Virginia, Daniel Ware Jan 2008

The Natural History And Distribution Of The Mountain Earthsnake (Virginia Valeriae Pulchra) In West Virginia, Daniel Ware

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Mountain Earthsnake, Virginia valeriae pulchra, has received little attention in the literature to date. It is imperiled in West Virginia with only 6 to 20 populations known throughout the Allegheny Mountain and Ridge and Valley Physiographic provinces. Eighty snakes were collected during the 2006 and 2007 summers. Typical habitat is open fields with short grass, flat to moderate slopes that have scattered fine sandstone rocks near a source of water and forest edge. Fine sandstone rocks were the primary cover objects used. Snakes were sexually dimorphic with males having longer tails expressed as a percent of total body lengths …
