Health-Culture And Social Justice: What Challenges Do They Present In Today’S Diverse And Globalized World?, Dr. Francis Musa Boakari Ph.D.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

In matters of health and culture, For some, uncertainty is the motor of life; For others, anything only is because it is explainable; Not just any explanations, but those that are “data-based.” Still for some individuals, phenomena can be both certain and uncertain. For this third class, “believables” are found in-between what is and what can be. Subjectivity and context may be primordial in many things HUMAN, but Equity in opportunities and access to social goods and services, Dignity for all human beings under every circumstance, and Respect for self and others at all times, are even much more basic. …

Genome Structure And Emerging Evidence Of An Incipient Sex Chromosome In Populus, T. Yin, S. P. Difazio, L. E. Gunter, X. Zhang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The genus Populus consists of dioecious woody species with largely unknown genetic mechanisms for gender determination. We have discovered genetic and genomic features in the peritelomeric region of chromosome XIX that suggest this region of the Populus genome is in the process of developing characteristics of a sex chromosome. We have identified a gender-associated locus that consistently maps to this region. Furthermore, comparison of genetic maps across multiple Populus families reveals consistently distorted segregation within this region. We have intensively characterized this region using an F1 interspecific cross involving the female genotype that was used for genome sequencing. This region …

Discipline-Specific Library Instruction For Millennial Students, Daniel S. Dotson, Karen R. Diaz

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The Ohio State University Libraries offers an introduction to library research to students in survey courses that introduce them to the university. Through an online assignment called Make the Leap, students expand their skills in finding web sites, books, and journal articles via the use of a web search engine, the library catalog, and a research database. In 2006, the assignment was retooled to target engineering students using topics and tools relevant to engineering and computer science students. This article details the pedagogies and strategies of both versions of the assignment and shows evidence for student and instructor preference toward …

Legal Tools For Lnstream Flow Protection, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2008

Legal Tools For Lnstream Flow Protection, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Across North America, flow alterations and diversions have led to the depletion of stream flow-reliant ecosystems and ecosystem services. In western states and provinces, the law historically considered water left in the stream to be wasted. Western state laws encouraged full appropriation of rivers and streams, primarily to satisfy the need to divert water to arid areas for economic and domestic purposes. In Eastern states and provinces, stream flows have been altered and depleted through channelization, dams, levees and other structural changes. By the 1970s, "salmon populations were crashing, riparian habitat was being lost, and . . . legendary rivers …

Boom And Bust On The Great Plains: Déjà Vu All Over Again, Sandra Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Two books published in 2006 provide a compelling portrait of the "boom and bust" cycles that have plagued the Great Plains since European settlement. The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl and Ogallala Blue: Water and Life on the High Plains stand beside Mark Reisner's classic study of western water resources, Cadillac Desert, and Wallace Stegner's tribute to one of America's greatest conservationists, Crossing the Next Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West, as "must read" books for anyone who cares about the future of …

Grieving In The Muscogee Creek Tribe, Andrea C. Walker Jan 2008

Grieving In The Muscogee Creek Tribe, Andrea C. Walker

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

A qualitative, collective case study explores grieving in the Muscogee Creek tribe. Data from interviews with 27 participants, all adult members of the tribe, reveal tendencies in patterns of grieving. Commonalities include (a) individual strength and certainty of recovery; (b) focus on giving to others in the family and coping as a family unit; and (c) support mainly received from family. Cultural factors of belief in nature’s balance, family, community, and Indian medicine influence the meaning Creeks associate with death, which, in turn, contributes to grieving patterns.

Nadph Oxidase As A Therapeutic Target In Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle L. Block Jan 2008

Nadph Oxidase As A Therapeutic Target In Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle L. Block

Anatomy and Neurobiology Publications

At present, available treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are largely unable to halt disease progression. Microglia, the resident macrophages in the brain, are strongly implicated in the pathology and progressively degenerative nature of AD. Specifically, microglia are activated in response to both β amyloid (Aβ) and neuronal damage, and can become a chronic source of neurotoxic cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS). NADPH oxidase is a multi-subunit enzyme complex responsible for the production of both extracellular and intracellular ROS by microglia. Importantly, NADPH oxidase expression is upregulated in AD and is an essential component of microglia-mediated Aβ neurotoxicity. Activation of …

A Synaptic Nidogen: Developmental Regulation And Role Of Nidogen-2 At The Neuromuscular Junction, Michael A. Fox, Matthew Sp Ho, Neil Smyth, Joshua R. Sanes Jan 2008

A Synaptic Nidogen: Developmental Regulation And Role Of Nidogen-2 At The Neuromuscular Junction, Michael A. Fox, Matthew Sp Ho, Neil Smyth, Joshua R. Sanes

Anatomy and Neurobiology Publications

Background

The skeletal neuromuscular junction is a useful model for elucidating mechanisms that regulate synaptogenesis. Developmentally important intercellular interactions at the neuromuscular junction are mediated by the synaptic portion of a basal lamina that completely ensheaths each muscle fiber. Basal laminas in general are composed of four main types of glycosylated proteins: laminins, collagens IV, heparan sulfate proteoglycans and nidogens (entactins). The portion of the muscle fiber basal lamina that passes between the motor nerve terminal and postsynaptic membrane has been shown to bear distinct isoforms of the first three of these. For laminins and collagens IV, the proteins are …

Accelerated Exchange Of Exon Segments In Viperid Three-Finger Toxin Genes (Sistrurus Catenatus Edwardsii; Desert Massasauga), Robin Doley, Susanta Pahari, Stephen P. Mackessy, R. Manjunatha Kini

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Publications

Background Snake venoms consist primarily of proteins and peptides showing a myriad of potent biological activities which have been shaped by both adaptive and neutral selective forces. Venom proteins are encoded by multigene families that have evolved through a process of gene duplication followed by accelerated evolution in the protein coding region.

Results Here we report five gene structures of three-finger toxins from a viperid snake, Sistrurus catenatus edwardsii. These toxin genes are structured similarly to elapid and hydrophiid three-finger toxin genes, with two introns and three exons. Both introns and exons show distinct patterns of segmentation, and the insertion/deletion …

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Publications

Background Multiple physiologic impairments are responsible for chronic wounds. A cell line grown which retains its phenotype from patient wounds would provide means of testing new therapies. Clinical information on patients from whom cells were grown can provide insights into mechanisms of specific disease such as diabetes or biological processes such as aging.

The objective of this study was 1) To culture human cells derived from patients with chronic wounds and to test the effects of putative therapies, Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF) on these cells. 2) To describe a methodology to create fibroblast cell lines from patients with chronic …
