A Trickster’S Oaths In The Homeric Hymn To Hermes, Judith Fletcher Jan 2008

A Trickster’S Oaths In The Homeric Hymn To Hermes, Judith Fletcher

Ancient Studies Faculty Publications

Hermes’ maturation into a god of commerce and diplomacy is punctuated by a series of oaths. At first he uses tricky or unsworn oaths in the investigation of his theftof Apollo’s cattle, but eventually he and Apollo exchange oaths that evoke the protocols of ritualized friendship. Although the ceremony suggests that Hermes has achieved adulthood, a narrative sleight of hand leaves some ambiguity about the completion of the ritual.

Calling Dick Tracy! Or, Cellphone Use, Progress, And A Racial Paradigm, Judith A. Nicholson Jan 2008

Calling Dick Tracy! Or, Cellphone Use, Progress, And A Racial Paradigm, Judith A. Nicholson

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The hero and phone-watch from Dick Tracy are evoked regularly in news and studies of cellphone use. This paper argues that the racial paradigm of White law enforcer and Dark law-breaker in the comic strip resonates in contemporary evocations and in discussions of cellphone use and crime. Representations of mobile communication and racialized criminality in Dick Tracy were inspired by the 1930s “war on crime” that intersected with wireless innovations and with lynching. This paper interprets that repeated evocation of the comic strip is a “perverse nostalgia” for an old-fashioned form of law and order premised on racialized violence and …

Éther 2.0: Révolutions Sans Fil, Ghislain Thibault, Thierry Bardini Jan 2008

Éther 2.0: Révolutions Sans Fil, Ghislain Thibault, Thierry Bardini

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Plant Succession On Gopher Mounds In Western Cascade Meadows: Consequences For Species Diversity And Heterogeneity, Chad C. Jones, Charles B. Halpern, Jessica Niederer Jan 2008

Plant Succession On Gopher Mounds In Western Cascade Meadows: Consequences For Species Diversity And Heterogeneity, Chad C. Jones, Charles B. Halpern, Jessica Niederer

Botany Faculty Publications

Pocket gophers have the potential to alter the dynamics of grasslands by creating mounds that bury existing vegetation and locally reset succession. Gopher mounds may provide safe sites for less competitive species, potentially increasing both species diversity and vegetation heterogeneity (spatial variation in species composition). We compared species composition, diversity and heterogeneity among gopher mounds of different ages in three montane meadows in the Cascade Range of Oregon. Cover of graminoids and forbs increased with mound age, as did species richness. Contrary to many studies, we found no evidence that mounds provided safe sites for early successional species, despite their …

Contested Morality: Judge Posner On Infanticide, Slavery, Suttee, Female Genital Mutilation, And The Holocaust, Anthony D'Amato Jan 2008

Contested Morality: Judge Posner On Infanticide, Slavery, Suttee, Female Genital Mutilation, And The Holocaust, Anthony D'Amato

Faculty Working Papers

Judge Richard Posner locates his moral theory between moral absolutism and the "anything goes" kind of moral relativism. He analyzes whether five contested topics are subject to useful moral debate: infanticide, slavery, suttee, female genital mutilation, and the Holocaust. Each topic presents a different perspective on his own moral theory. But each one fails in a different way to place his own moral theory on a sound footing.

Originalism: Lessons From Things That Go Without Saying, Robert William Bennett Jan 2008

Originalism: Lessons From Things That Go Without Saying, Robert William Bennett

Faculty Working Papers

After setting the originalism "stage" and discussion of some of its tribulations, the article turns to the problem of constitutional silences. These come in many shadings, and the article concentrates on three that illustrate different sorts of problems: 1) the failure of the Guarantee Clause to provide a more precise definition of a "republican form of government"; 2) the deafening silence about any role for political parties in the nation's politics and governance; and 3) the absence of guidance about "discretion" to be exercised by presidential elections, which surfaces these days as the problem of the "faithless elector," one who …

Does Wind Affect Genetic Structure And Gene Flow In Two Phyllostomid Bat Species (Erophylla Sezekorni And Macrotus Waterhousii) In The Bahamas And Greater Antilles?, Robert Muscarella

Open Access Theses

Gene flow dictates a broad range of ecological and evolutionary processes. Understanding the factors mediating magnitude and direction of gene flow is crucial for interpreting patterns of genetic diversity and for answering many kinds of biological questions. Recent advances at the interface of population genetics and GIS technology have expanded our perspective of the geographic and physical features influencing gene flow and, in turn, shaping genetic structure of populations. I investigated the effect of surface-level trade winds on genetic structure and gene flow in two species of phyllostomid bats in the Bahamas and Greater Antilles: Erophylla sezekorni (the buffy flower …

The Importance Of Fast Skeletal Regulatory Light Chain In Muscle Contraction, Fatima Pestana De Freitas Jan 2008

The Importance Of Fast Skeletal Regulatory Light Chain In Muscle Contraction, Fatima Pestana De Freitas

Open Access Theses

The aim of this project was to produce and study a murine homozygous knock-in model containing a fast skeletal regulatory light chain (RLC) containing a Asp49toAla point mutation. The D49A mutation is in the functional calcium binding loop of RLC, which is believed to modulate muscle contraction in striated muscle. To introduce the mutation, a reversible knock-out/knock-in system was employed. The Cre/Lox-P strategy was used to conditionally knock-in the RLC D49A mutation. The generation of the knock-in mouse was attempted with two different breeding strategies consisting of two Cre mouse lines with differential expression patterns during development. The proposed animal …

Evaluation Of Sensorimotor Deficits And Compensatory Mechanisms Following Traumaticbrain Injury Using Three-Dimensional Kinematic Analysis In Rodent Models, Connie Myerson Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Sensorimotor Deficits And Compensatory Mechanisms Following Traumaticbrain Injury Using Three-Dimensional Kinematic Analysis In Rodent Models, Connie Myerson

Open Access Theses

Three-dimensional kinematic analysis was used to precisely quantify alterations in gait and compensatory behaviors in rat performance on beamwalk and treadmill tasks following moderate traumatic brain injury. Measures included limb height, joint angles, adduction, flexion, and swing/stance phase duration. Injury-associated changes on the treadmill included postural and hip angle change, and increases in hip height and adduction. The beamwalk presented as a more sensitive measure when coupled with kinematic analysis, as differences between injury groups were evident on measures including knee, ankle, elbow, and mid hip height. Animal response was diverse, possibly reflecting individual compensatory strategies which varied among injured …

Experiment Of All Solid-State Electrochemical Sensor For Surface Chemistry Analysis For Adhesive Bonding, Yao Ge Jan 2008

Experiment Of All Solid-State Electrochemical Sensor For Surface Chemistry Analysis For Adhesive Bonding, Yao Ge

Open Access Theses

This thesis presents: 1) literature review on adhesive bonding technologies in aviation industry including surface pretreatments (pre-preparation), surface quality assurance, and surface chemistry analysis methods; and 2) development and study of a novel solid-state electrochemical sensor for surface chemistry analysis of composite surfaces. The performance of an adhesive bonding is greatly determined by the adherend's surface pretreatments which could increase surface tension, surface roughness, and change surface chemistry thereby increasing bond strength and durability of polymer composite adhesive joints. The primary goal of the surface pretreatments is to increase the surface roughness, surface energy, chemical activity, and cleanliness of the …

Mechanisms Linking Early Behavioral Inhibition To Later Social Functioning: The Role Of Autobiographical Memory Biases, Laura Levin Jan 2008

Mechanisms Linking Early Behavioral Inhibition To Later Social Functioning: The Role Of Autobiographical Memory Biases, Laura Levin

Open Access Theses

This study examined the associations between behavioral inhibition in early childhood and patterns of social-emotional functioning in adolescence. As part of a larger longitudinal study on temperament and social development, adolescents who were recruited as infants completed two tasks to assess social-cognitive biases at follow-up: an information-processing task and an autobiographical memory task. The information-processing task assessed adolescents' interpretations of ambiguous situations. Next, adolescents completed an autobiographical memory task where they were exposed to both social and neutral-cued words, and recalled the first memory that came to mind. Memories were coded for specificity, affective tone, response latency, and emotional intensity. …

Face Processing: The N170 Erp Component In Autism, Camilla M. Hileman Jan 2008

Face Processing: The N170 Erp Component In Autism, Camilla M. Hileman

Open Access Theses

Face processing deficits appear early in autism and greatly impact subsequent development. In this paper, the N170 component, an event-related brain potential sensitive to face processing, is examined in children with autism and typical development. The N170 amplitude was sensitive to group differences, as children with typical development showed greater differentiation to upright vs. inverted stimuli and faces vs. vehicles than children with autism. The N170 was also delayed in children with autism. The N170 was not a sensitive marker of individual differences in social behavior and autistic symptomology, but the proceeding positive peak, the P1, was a sensitive marker …

The Use Of Satellite-Based Ocean Color Measurements For Detecting The Florida Red Tide (Karenia Brevis), Gustavo De Araujo Carvalho Jan 2008

The Use Of Satellite-Based Ocean Color Measurements For Detecting The Florida Red Tide (Karenia Brevis), Gustavo De Araujo Carvalho

Open Access Theses

As human populations increase along coastal watersheds, the understanding and monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms (or red tides) is an increasingly important issue. A consistent method for accurately detecting red tides using satellite measurements would bring tremendous societal benefits to resource managers, the scientific community and to the public as well. In the West Florida Shelf, blooms of the toxic dinoflagelate Karenia brevis are responsible for massive red tides causing fish kills, massive die-offs of marine mammals, shellfish poisoning, and acute respiratory irritation in humans. In this work, for the first time a long-term dataset (2002~2006) the MODerate Resolution Imaging …

Evaluation Of Enterococci, An Indicator Microbe, And The Sources That Impact The Water Quality At A Subtropical Non-Point Source Recreational Beach, Mary Elizabeth Wright Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Enterococci, An Indicator Microbe, And The Sources That Impact The Water Quality At A Subtropical Non-Point Source Recreational Beach, Mary Elizabeth Wright

Open Access Theses

Beach advisories are issued at recreational beaches when the water quality exceeds regulatory limits for the indicator organism, enterococci. Elevated levels of enterococci have been observed at Hobie Cat Beach, the study marine beach site, located on Virginia Key, Florida. The study site represents a classic non-point source sub/tropical marine recreational beach area with high human and animal use, representative of many beaches worldwide in sub/tropical areas. The dissertation consisted of two separate but related studies: the first to identify environmental and geographic factors, and the second to evaluate the impact of known animal sources of enterococci. The first efforts …

Francois Valentijn's Oud En Nieuw Oost Indien And The Dutch Frontispiece In The 17th And 18th Centuries, Maria S. Labarge Jan 2008

Francois Valentijn's Oud En Nieuw Oost Indien And The Dutch Frontispiece In The 17th And 18th Centuries, Maria S. Labarge

Open Access Theses

In this thesis I analyze the Dutch frontispiece to Francois Valentijn's 1726 book Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien and demonstrate that it is a significant artistic statement, original in its rich and imaginative iconography and emblematic program. I describe and explain the image and its iconographic program and emblematic structure. I compare the frontispiece to many other Dutch frontispieces and artworks that likewise feature the four continent allegories and other iconographic elements. I demonstrate the ways in which the frontispiece superbly and comprehensively summarizes and visualizes the text, which is the primary purpose of frontispieces. I also show how the …

Analysis Of The Generation Of Auditory Steady-State Cortical Evoked Responses In Guinea Pigs, Jose Alejandro Briceno Jan 2008

Analysis Of The Generation Of Auditory Steady-State Cortical Evoked Responses In Guinea Pigs, Jose Alejandro Briceno

Open Access Theses

Recent research shows that human auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) develop a resonance at 40 Hz and the dramatic amplitude increase of the Pb component of the middle latency response (MLR) accounts for the high amplitude of the ASSR at 40 Hz. The first part of this study aimed to investigate the ASSR resonance characteristics as a function of rate in guinea pigs. A study of the grand average of the peak-to-peak and fundamental frequency amplitudes does indeed show a resonance around 40 Hz in guinea pigs. Unlike human ASSRs, this resonance is very broad (26-52 Hz) and flat. The centrally …

Ecophysiology Of The Gray Snapper (Lutjanus Griseus): Salinity Effects On Abundance, Physiology And Behavior, Xaymara M. Serrano Jan 2008

Ecophysiology Of The Gray Snapper (Lutjanus Griseus): Salinity Effects On Abundance, Physiology And Behavior, Xaymara M. Serrano

Open Access Theses

Mangroves and seagrass beds serve as essential fish habitat for many economically- and ecologically-valuable species. Depending on their location, these shallow-water habitats are often characterized by substantial fluctuation in salinity levels, which can represent a source of osmoregulatory stress for associated organisms. In South Florida, one of the most important fish species that utilizes these habitats is the gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus). Although this species constitutes a significant portion of the region?s total recreational fishery harvest, the effects of salinity on its distribution, physiology and behavior remain poorly understood. The main goal of this thesis was then to investigate the …

Social Dominance And Conciliatory Gestures As Determinants Of Reconciliation And Forgiveness, Adam Cohen Jan 2008

Social Dominance And Conciliatory Gestures As Determinants Of Reconciliation And Forgiveness, Adam Cohen

Open Access Theses

In this project I evaluated the effect of social dominance on reconciliation and forgiveness. Based on studies of nonhuman primates, it was hypothesized that humans would be more likely to accept and reciprocate conciliatory gestures when made by more socially dominant people. It was also hypothesized that the moderating effect of relative dominance on a victim?s decision to forgive would not be as strong as relative dominance?s effect on a victim?s decision to reconcile. This hypothesis was based on the expectation that reconciliation is most essential for gaining access to transgressor-controlled resources. However, conciliatory gestures by less dominant transgressors more …

A Second Generation Ex-Vivo Accommodation Simulator: Design And Calibration, Derek Nankivil Jan 2008

A Second Generation Ex-Vivo Accommodation Simulator: Design And Calibration, Derek Nankivil

Presbyopia is the progressive decrease in accommodative ability with age, and it implies a major loss of visual function. Presbyopia is the only condition of the eye which affects everyone who lives beyond 50 years of age. As part of a joint effort, the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Vision Cooperative Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, developed two different ex-vivo accommodation simulators (EVAS) to examine the mechanisms of accommodation and presbyopia, and to test and validate new ophthalmic surgical procedures such as lens refilling. The purpose of this thesis is …

The Death Of The Freedom Lie In The Graduate And The Mutation Of The American Dream In Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Daryl Axelrod Jan 2008

The Death Of The Freedom Lie In The Graduate And The Mutation Of The American Dream In Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Daryl Axelrod

Open Access Theses

The type of commentary a narrative is able to make is fully dependent on the type of narrator who is relating it. The visual elements present in a film are the true narrational forces which guide it. The presence of the camera, the use of lighting, the architecture, and the objects present in the film each have their own meaning. These elements come together to make a greater commentary than the dialogue. How these meanings interact with each other is what defines what type of narrator is present in the film. By analyzing what type of narrator is relating the …

Cellular Encapsulation Techniques: Camouflaging Islet Cells From The Immune And Inflammatory Responses Associated With Islet Transplantation, Kristina Kateri Finn Jan 2008

Cellular Encapsulation Techniques: Camouflaging Islet Cells From The Immune And Inflammatory Responses Associated With Islet Transplantation, Kristina Kateri Finn

Open Access Theses

Diabetes is a debilitating disease affecting millions of people worldwide. The transplantation of insulin-producing, pancreatic islet cells has been an extensively explored approach for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes. However, the need for a multi-donor source, the strong host immune responses, and a life-long immunosuppressive therapy regimen limits the widespread applicability of islet transplantation. Encapsulation of islet cells within a semi-permeable biomaterial as a means to mask transplanted cells from the host has been shown to be a viable option for the protection of islets upon transplantation. Recent advancements, incorporating additional knowledge of biomaterials, have revitalized the field of …

Dynamic Web Tools For Trigonometry, Steven J. Wilson Jan 2008

Dynamic Web Tools For Trigonometry, Steven J. Wilson

Innovations in Math Technology

In the last 20 years, computer technology having mathematical capability has been developed, improved, and become widely available, but textbook presentations are still largely free of any discussion that might require technology. Technology could be used in mathematical instruction for student drill and practice, for instructor demonstrations that promote conceptual understanding, or for the exploration of mathematical ideas, but software is often designed to be pedagogically generic, leaving its use to the creativity of the instructor. Technological solutions for local machines can be quite extensive, but cost and time constraints then limit availability for student use. The internet has the …
