Microbes And The Days Of Creation, Alan L. Gillen
Microbes And The Days Of Creation, Alan L. Gillen
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The world of germs and microbes has received much attention in recent years. But where do microbes fit into the creation account? Were they created along with the rest of the plants and animals in the first week of creation, or were they created later, after the Fall? These are some questions that creation microbiologists have been asking in recent years. Ongoing research, based on the creation paradigm, appears to provide some answers to these puzzling questions. The answers to these questions are not explicit in Scripture, so the answers cannot be dogmatic. However, a reasonable extrapolation from biological data …
Entrepreneurship As Emergence, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein
Entrepreneurship As Emergence, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein
College of Management Working Papers and Reports
Emergence is at the core of entrepreneurship research, which has explored the coming-intobeing of opportunities, new organizations, re-organizations, and new industries, agglomerations, and so on. Emergence is also at the theoretical core of complexity science, which is essentially dedicated to exploring how and why emergence happens in dynamic systems (like entrepreneurship). This exploration begins by defining Opportunity In-tension as a dynamic interplay of personal agency and perceived opportunity, which is a catalyst for entrepreneurial behavior. Then I propose two insights about emergence, based on recent research in complexity science. First, a process theory for emergence is presented, which integrates Gartner’s …

Interspecific Hybridization Yields Strategy For South Pacific Filariasis Vector Elimination, Corey L. Brelsfoard, Yves Séchan, Stephen L. Dobson
Interspecific Hybridization Yields Strategy For South Pacific Filariasis Vector Elimination, Corey L. Brelsfoard, Yves Séchan, Stephen L. Dobson
Entomology Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a leading cause of disability in South Pacific regions, where >96% of the 1.7 million population are at risk of LF infection. As part of current global campaign, mass drug administration (MDA) has effectively reduced lymphatic filiariasis prevalence, but mosquito vector biology can complicate the MDA strategy. In some regions, there is evidence that the goal of LF elimination cannot be attained via MDA alone. Obligate vector mosquitoes provide additional targets for breaking the LF transmission cycle, but existing methods are ineffective for controlling the primary vector throughout much of the South Pacific, Aedes polynesiensis. …
Using Interactive Diagrams To Teach Graduate Students About Statistical Power, Eric D. Hunter
Using Interactive Diagrams To Teach Graduate Students About Statistical Power, Eric D. Hunter
Theses and Dissertations
This report describes the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a web-based tutorial designed to teach graduate students about the statistical concept of power. It contains a literature review of techniques used to teach statistics, similar computer-based programs for representing the concept of power, and instructional theories that pertain to web-based tutorials. It describes the process of designing and developing this tutorial in detail. The results section contains a description of the product implementation with three different groups and discusses the qualitative and quantitative findings from each of these implementations. Finally, there is a discussion of the tutorial's strengths and …

Review And Analysis Of International And Budgetary Considerations For The 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, Bashir Qasmi, Evert Van Der Sluis
Review And Analysis Of International And Budgetary Considerations For The 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, Bashir Qasmi, Evert Van Der Sluis
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
We assess the extent to which national budget considerations, international trade negotiations, and domestic political deliberations affect the potential development of an omnibus farm bill, which may be signed into law in 2008. With no successful conclusion of the Doha Development Round of trade negotiations in sight, U.S. legislators appear unable to make politically unpopular decisions on domestic farm policy reform. However, the absence of an international trade agreement does not reduce the need for the U.S. to comply with previous agreements.
The Efficacy Of The Grid Marketing Channel For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen
The Efficacy Of The Grid Marketing Channel For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Beef industry data suggest that beef carcass yield and quality grades have shown little improvement over the last six years. Empirical analysis, based on USDA public market reports, indicates that the share of steer slaughter volume marketed on a grid is less than industry estimates and the growth in grid market share of total steer slaughter is stagnate. Trend analysis of grid market share and carcass quality suggests that grid pricing has not made sufficient progress in achieving the goals envisioned for it as a value based marketing system. We conclude additional research on producer resistance to selling on a …

A Tick From A Prehistoric Arizona Coprolite (Galley Proofs), Keith L. Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Luciana Sianto, Adauto Araújo, Scott Lyell Gardner, John J. Janovy Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Ticks have never been reported in archaeological analyses. Here, we present the discovery of a tick from a coprolite excavated from Antelope Cave in extreme northwest Arizona. Dietary analysis indicates that the coprolite has a human origin. This archaeological occupation is associated with the Ancestral Pueblo culture (Anasazi). This discovery supports previous hypotheses that ticks were a potential source of disease and that ectoparasites were eaten by ancient people.
