Order Soricomorpha Gregory, 1910, Neal Woodman, Jaime Péfaur
Order Soricomorpha Gregory, 1910, Neal Woodman, Jaime Péfaur
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Neal Woodman and Jaime Péfaur
The Soricomorpha originally was proposed by Gregory (1910) as a "section" containing the shrews (Soric:idae) and moles (Talpidae) within the suborder Lypotyphla, order Insectivora. More recent concepts of what constitutes the Soricomorpha vary. Typically, the order comprises shrews and solenodons (Solenodontidael, and possibly tenrees (Tenrecidae; McKenna and Bell 1997) or moles (Amason et al. 2002) or both (MacPhee and Novacek 1993). A possible relationship with gymnures and hedgehogs (Erinacidae) also has received support (Malia, Adkins, and Allard 2002). Previously, these five families had been included with golden moles (Chrysochloridae) in the order Lypotyphla, or along …
Human Activity Recognition Using Limb Component Extraction, Jamie Boeheim
Human Activity Recognition Using Limb Component Extraction, Jamie Boeheim
Theses
in the field of human activity recognition has existed for quite sometime, but has gained popularity in recent years for use in many areas of application. In the security industry, suspicious activities could be detected in high-profile areas. In the medical industry, systems could be trained to detect patterns of motion indicating distress or to detect a lack of motion if a person had fallen and was unable to move. However, algorithms with reliable accuracy are difficult to implement in a real-time environment due to computational complexity. This thesis developed a new way of extracting and using data from a …

Repairing Family Law, Clare Huntington
Duke Law Journal
Scholars in the burgeoning field of law and emotion have paid surprisingly little attention to family law. This gap is unfortunate because law and emotion has the potential to bring great insights to family law. This Article begins to fill this void-and inaugurate a larger debate about the central role of emotion in family law-by exploring the intriguing and significant consequences for the regulation of families that flow from a theory of intimacy first articulated by psychoanalytic theorist Melanie Klein. According to Klein, individuals love others, inevitably transgress against those they love out of hate and aggression, feel guilt about …

Many areas in power systems require solving one or more nonlinear optimization problems. While analytical methods might suffer from slow convergence and the curse of dimensionality, heuristics-based swarm intelligence can be an efficient alternative. Particle swarm optimization (PSO), part of the swarm intelligence family, is known to effectively solve large-scale nonlinear optimization problems. This paper presents a detailed overview of the basic concepts of PSO and its variants. Also, it provides a comprehensive survey on the power system applications that have benefited from the powerful nature of PSO as an optimization technique. For each application, technical details that are required …

For decades, Mr. Hong and his family have toiled the ground of Dounan Village, an area of Yunnan Province that became well-known throughout China for the quality of its fresh vegetables. While Hong and his neighbors have, since the early 1980s, concentrated on the small plot of land that the state allocated to them, in recent years, Dounan village has begun producing vegetables in large enough scale to market to distant, wealthy coastal areas, bringing new-found prosperity to the area. After gaining experience producing vegetables both on the plot that the government allocated to his family, and on his neighbors’ …

Should Green House Gas Permits Be Allocated On A Per Capita Basis?, Cass R. Sunstein, Eric A. Posner
Should Green House Gas Permits Be Allocated On A Per Capita Basis?, Cass R. Sunstein, Eric A. Posner
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Many people believe that the problem of climate change would be best handled by an international agreement that includes a system of “cap and trade.” Such a system would impose a global cap on greenhouse gases emissions and allocate tradable emissions permits. This proposal raises a crucial but insufficiently explored question: How should such permits be allocated? It is tempting to suggest that in principle, allocation should be done on a per capita basis, with the idea that each person should begin with the same entitlement, regardless of place of birth. This idea, pressed by many analysts and by the …

Soft Law, Eric A. Posner, Jacob Gersen
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Soft law consist of rules issued by law-making bodies that do not comply with procedural formalities necessary to give the rules legal status yet nonetheless may influence the behavior of other law-making bodies and of the public. Soft law has been much discussed in the literatures on international law, constitutional law, and administrative law, yet congressional soft-lawmaking, such as the congressional resolution, has received little attention. Congressional soft law affects behavior by informing the public and political institutions about the intentions and policy preferences of Congress, which are informative about future hard law as well as of Congress’s view of …

Thompson's And Acosta's Collaborative Creation Of The Gonzo Narrative Style, Shimberlee Jirón-King
Thompson's And Acosta's Collaborative Creation Of The Gonzo Narrative Style, Shimberlee Jirón-King
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Thompson's and Acosta's Collaborative Creation of the Gonzo Narrative Style," Shimberlee Jirón-King presents an analysis of Hunter S. Thompson's and Oscar Zeta Acosta's works and a correction about the origins of Gonzo Journalism. Jirón-King suggests that Thompson's and Acosta's writings express the authors' disillusionment about the loss of the American Dream and that their texts suggest the revolutionary movements they hoped for would transform a disintegrating culture have only fallen prey to the shortsightedness of US-American culture. The counter culture they observe simply develops its own forms of racism, classism, power-mongering, and corruption that re-inscribe hegemonic discourses …

Multiplayer online computer games are quickly growing in popularity, with millions of players logging in every day. While most play in accordance with the rules set up by the game designers, some choose to utilize artificially intelligent assistant programs, a.k.a. bots, to gain an unfair advantage over other players. In this article we demonstrate how an embedded noninteractive test can be used to prevent automatic artificially intelligent players from illegally participating in online game-play. Our solution has numerous advantages over traditional tests, such as its nonobtrusive nature, continuous verification, and simple noninteractive and outsourcing-proof design. © 2008 ACM.

Estimating Population Size Of Mexican Wolves Noninvasively (Arizona), C. A. Cariappa, Warren Ballard, Stewart W. Breck, Antoinette J. Piaggio, Melissa Neubaum
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Monitoring wolf abundance is a significant problem confronting biologists coordinating the recovery of the Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) population in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area (BRWRA) in Arizona and New Mexico (Figure 1). Thus far, radiotelemetry has been a satisfactory method. However, collaring and tracking more wolves in the expanding population is expensive. The development of a cost-effective method to estimate Mexican wolf populations will assist the long-term management and recovery of wolves.
We are attempting species and individual identification using DNA extracted from wolf scat because scat is both readily available and easy to collect …

Ant Clustering With Locally Weighting Ant Perception And Diversified Memory, Gilbert L. Peterson, Christopher B. Mayer, Thomas L. Kubler
Ant Clustering With Locally Weighting Ant Perception And Diversified Memory, Gilbert L. Peterson, Christopher B. Mayer, Thomas L. Kubler
Faculty Publications
Ant clustering algorithms are a robust and flexible tool for clustering data that have produced some promising results. This paper introduces two improvements that can be incorporated into any ant clustering algorithm: kernel function similarity weights and a similarity memory model replacement scheme. A kernel function weights objects within an ant’s neighborhood according to the object distance and provides an alternate interpretation of the similarity of objects in an ant’s neighborhood. Ants can hill-climb the kernel gradients as they look for a suitable place to drop a carried object. The similarity memory model equips ants with a small memory consisting …
Radiation-Induced Glutamate Transport Alterations In Neuron-Astrocyte Coupling, Martha Celia Sanchez
Radiation-Induced Glutamate Transport Alterations In Neuron-Astrocyte Coupling, Martha Celia Sanchez
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Exposure of the central nervous system (CNS) to ionizing radiation is known to result in behavioral, cognitive, and motor deficits - effects similar to those seen in many neurodegenerative disorders. Neurons and astrocytes, two principal cell types in the brain, coexist as an interdependent metabolic unit via the neurotransmitter glutamate. Disruption of this metabolic coupling would have widespread effects within the CNS, therefore it is hypothesized that ionizing radiation impairs glutamate transport and metabolism, and increases oxidative stress, ultimately impairing neuron-astrocyte coupling. We propose to investigate the mechanism and determine the impetus for radiation-induced neurotoxicity by measuring the temporal sequence …

Memory For Emotional Images : Recognition And Temporal Contexts, George E. Devore
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Negative emotional stimuli are usually better remembered than neutral emotional stimuli. Previous examination of binding theory found no differences in recall for homogeneous lists of taboo and neutral words. The current study expands on binding theory using negative and neutral visual stimuli in homogeneous lists. A rapid serial visual presentation paradigm and recognition and temporal memory item-discrimination tasks were used. Binding theory predicts no differences between negative and neutral images for recognition and temporal memory. Results were consistent with the assumptions of binding theory and no significant differences were found. This result suggests that binding theory generalizes for visual stimuli …

Pvps And Qsas Opportunities To Addvalue To South Dakota Cattle, Russ Daly
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
The opening of the export market to Japan for cattle less than 20 months of age is a potential opportunity for South Dakota cattle raisers to add value to their calf crop. In order to qualify for this market, calves need to be age verified through programs already in place through the USDA. In most cases, when cattle are age verified through birth dates, they are also verified to a particular source (or farm), thus the term “age and source verified.” Cattle that have been age and source verified may bring a premium in certain markets, but premiums are subject …

Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz (camelina) is an oilseed producing plant in the Family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) originating from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. There is increasing interest in converting waste cooking oil and oil produced from oilseed crops, such as camelina, into biofuels in order to decrease dependence on petroleum products for fuel sources. The interest for growing oilseed crops in Utah is growing as well. Camelina sativa is a low input oilseed-producing crop adapted to climates similar to central Utah. Central Utah is also home to the Utah commercial turkey industry.
