A Hybrid Communications Network Simulation-Independent Toolkit, David M. Dines Mar 2008

A Hybrid Communications Network Simulation-Independent Toolkit, David M. Dines

Theses and Dissertations

Net-centric warfare requires information superiority to enable decision superiority, culminating in insurmountable combat power against our enemies on the battlefield. Information superiority must be attained and retained for success in today’s joint/coalition battlespace. To accomplish this goal, our combat networks must reliably, expediently and completely deliver over a wide range of mobile and fixed assets. Furthermore, each asset must be given special consideration for the sensitivity, priority and volume of information required by the mission. Evolving a grand design of the enabling network will require a flexible evaluation platform to try and select the right combination of network strategies and …

El Sorgo O Llamado Comúnmente “Maicillo” Es Cultivado En Todo El Territorio Nacional Y Utilizado Para El Consumo Humano Y Animal (El Sorgo Es Alternativa De Harina Para Pan), Roxana Ortiz

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

The Anchor, Volume 121.17: March 5, 2008, Hope College

The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Background: As part of a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded collaborative project, we have performed over 150 microarray experiments measuring the response of C57/BL6 mouse bone marrow macrophages to toll-like receptor stimuli. These microarray expression profiles are available freely from our project web site http://www.innateImmunity-systemsbiology.org. Here, we report the development of a database of computationally predicted transcription factor binding sites and related genomic features for a set of over 2000 murine immune genes of interest. Our database, which includes microarray co-expression clusters and a host of web-based query, analysis and visualization facilities, is available freely via the …

Identifying Selected Regions From Heterozygosity And Divergence Using A Light-Coverage Genomic Dataset From Two Human Populations, T. K. Oleksyk, Kai Zhao, Francisco M. De La Vega, Dennis A. Gilbert, Stephen J. O'Brien, Michael W. Smith Mar 2008

Identifying Selected Regions From Heterozygosity And Divergence Using A Light-Coverage Genomic Dataset From Two Human Populations, T. K. Oleksyk, Kai Zhao, Francisco M. De La Vega, Dennis A. Gilbert, Stephen J. O'Brien, Michael W. Smith

Biology Faculty Articles

When a selective sweep occurs in the chromosomal region around a target gene in two populations that have recently separated, it produces three dramatic genomic consequences: 1) decreased multi-locus heterozygosity in the region; 2) elevated or diminished genetic divergence (FST) of multiple polymorphic variants adjacent to the selected locus between the divergent populations, due to the alternative fixation of alleles; and 3) a consequent regional increase in the variance of FST (S2FST) for the same clustered variants, due to the increased alternative fixation of alleles in the loci surrounding the selection target. In …

Microfluidic Power Generation, Aaron J. Sprecher Mar 2008

Microfluidic Power Generation, Aaron J. Sprecher

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis includes the detailed mathematical calculations used to determine the feasibility of harnessing electrical energy from the blood flow through human capillaries. The designs are inspired by human physiology and well established electromagnetic energy harvesting techniques and the fabrication methods have been proposed for the various components of the device. The fabrication and the design of these components have also been extensively analyzed using calculations based on the governing principles of microfluidics, kinetics, and electromagnetics. The analysis has confirmed that this design can produce sufficient energy to power a MEMS device using non-standard materials and fabrication methods. The designs …

Early Seizure Blockade: Preventing Long-Term Epileptic Activity In Wag/Rij Rats, April Levin Mar 2008

Early Seizure Blockade: Preventing Long-Term Epileptic Activity In Wag/Rij Rats, April Levin

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to determine how early seizure blockade with ethosuximide (ESX) would influence ion channel expression and long-term spike-wave discharge (SWD) activity in epileptic WAG/Rij rats. The goal was to elucidate the question Do seizures beget seizures? in a genetically prone model and if so, to attempt to interrupt this cycle by early intervention. In our first experiment, we used immunocytochemistry to determine the effect of ESX on cortical expression of ion channels in treated and untreated WAG/Rij rats and age-matched Wistar controls. This experiment revealed that treatment with ESX blocked the upregulation of Nav1.1 and …

Hypnosis For Relief Of Pain And Anxiety In Children Receiving Intravenous Lines In The Pediatric Emergency Department, Maya Maxym Mar 2008

Hypnosis For Relief Of Pain And Anxiety In Children Receiving Intravenous Lines In The Pediatric Emergency Department, Maya Maxym

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Intravenous line placement is one of the most common procedures performed on children presenting to the Emergency Department. Anxiety about needles is widespread, and many children experience high levels of fear and/or pain with their IV line placements. Hypnosis is a behavioral intervention that shows significant promise for alleviating procedure-related pain and anxiety in children. Twenty-five developmentally normal, English-speaking children between the ages of five and fifteen who required IV line placement in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Yale-New Haven Childrens Hospital were randomized to receive either the standard of care or standard of care plus a brief hypnotic intervention. …

Interactions Between The Glut4 Glucose Transporter And Its Regulator, Tug, Stefan Mansourian Mar 2008

Interactions Between The Glut4 Glucose Transporter And Its Regulator, Tug, Stefan Mansourian

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) is the major insulin-responsive glucose transporter in adipose and muscle tissues. Although the early steps in the insulin signaling pathway governing translocation of GLUT4 to the plasma membrane are well understood, the final steps in this pathway are not. TUG is a protein which has been shown to affect trafficking of GLUT4 both in the basal state and in response to insulin. One protein-protein interaction between TUG and the large cytosolic loop of GLUT4 has previously been identified. Based on reports of the requirement of the GLUT4 N-terminal domain for its proper targeting to the …
