Time Bending: Temporal Malleability And Organizational Response In Crisis Situations, Gary W. Carson Mar 2008

Time Bending: Temporal Malleability And Organizational Response In Crisis Situations, Gary W. Carson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The terrorist attacks of 9/11 created a crisis of epic proportions for the airline industry. The attacks, on the heels of the first financial losses in four years, threatened the existence of many airlines. It was incumbent on the CEO to make sense and offer a plan to control the crisis and move forward. There were fewer audiences more attentive to this senemaking activity than the stockholders. On the cusp of the organization, shareholder management is a central job of CEOs in the 21st century. This study focuses on CEO presentations to shareholders for American, Delta and Frontier Airlines before …

The Epidemiology And Incidence Of Visual Deficits Following Ocular Trauma In Pediatric Patients, Viral Virenda Juthani Mar 2008

The Epidemiology And Incidence Of Visual Deficits Following Ocular Trauma In Pediatric Patients, Viral Virenda Juthani

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Ocular trauma has long been a significant disabling American health problem and a leading cause of unilateral visual loss in children. These injuries have many diverse costs including human suffering, long-term disabilities, loss of productivity, and economic hardship. Although several studies have evaluated the epidemiology of specific types or mechanisms of ocular trauma, there are few that describe the epidemiology and visual outcomes of a comprehensive set of ocular trauma diagnoses. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the incidence of significant deficits in visual acuity following pediatric ocular trauma and to describe the overall epidemiology of pediatric ocular …

Optic Disc Changes After Pan-Retinal Photocoagulation For Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, David Jay-Pei Jeng

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study aims to examine the possible effect that pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) performed as treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) has on the optic disc. In a retrospective study, photographs of the optic disc before and after PRP, as well as photographs of untreated eyes for the control group, were evaluated for cup-to-disc ratio and optic disc pallor as gross measures of optic nerve health. A 5-grade scheme for optic color was devised for this study by selecting representative photographs for each grade, where 5 indicated the healthiest-appearing color. Kappa statistics indicated strong intra- and inter-observer consistency of observations for …

Nigerian Women Living In The United States Are More Hirsute Than Those Living In Nigeria., Kikelomo Olorunrinu

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study was to determine if there exists a difference in the rate of hirsutism in genetically similar women in two different environments. 112 Nigerian women living in the U.S.A and 70 women living in Nigeria were surveyed. All women completed a pictorial survey scoring peripheral hair growth in 6 body areas from 0 (no significant hair growth) to 4 (severe hair growth). Total hirsutism score was calculated as a sum of individual scores. The survey also included demographic data, menstrual history, and data regarding use of hormonal treatments. Statistical comparisons between groups included t-test, nonparametric tests and chi-square test. …

Inhibition Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Protection Of Mammalian Cells, Sudipta Seal, Junping Chen, James Mcginnis, Swanand Patil, Steve Sezate, Lily Wong

UCF Patents

Methods and compositions useful for neuronal protection in retinal cells in vitro and the protection of mammalian cells from reactive oxygen species in vivo are provided. Ultrafine nano-size cerium oxide particles, less than 10 nanometers in diameter, have been provided to decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) in retina tissue that generates large amounts of ROS. These reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in light-induced retina degeneration and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Cerium oxide nanoparticles have been used to promote the lifespan of retinal neurons and protect the neurons from apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide in vitro and in vivo. The …

The Getting Ready To Learn Program: An Impact Report, Rosa M. Avila

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Getting Ready to Learn (GRTL) program is an early intervention program designed to improve the developmental skills and learning capacity of Native American children in the Northwest Arctic region of Alaska. Early intervention programs have been found to decrease high school dropout rates and increase employment rates, which contribute to better health outcomes in young adulthood. The Northwest Arctic is a remote area that lacks many resources. As such, the people of this region experience various health disparities. The GRTL program was implemented in 7 of the 11 villages in the Northwest Arctic Borough of Alaska (NWABA). The purpose …

The Paleoindian Chipola: A Site Distribution Analysis And Review Of Collector Contributions In The Apalachicola River Valley, Northwest Florida, William D. Tyler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

At the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene, between 12,000 and 10,000 years ago, humans began to spread throughout North America and into many areas of Florida. These first Floridians are known as Paleoindians, and their culture is largely defined by their lithic assemblage, which includes the well known Clovis point. As the Pleistocene ice age came to a close glaciers melted, rivers experienced a drastic increase in water volume and the landmass of Florida began to shrink as the sea level in the Gulf of Mexico rose. This event likely submerged many early Paleoindian sites …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Understanding how nutrients affect gene expression will help us to understand the mechanisms controlling plant growth and development as a function of nutrient availability. Nitrate has been shown to serve as a signal for the control of gene expression in Arabidopsis. There is also evidence, on a gene-by-gene basis, that downstream products of nitrogen (N) assimilation such as glutamate (Glu) or glutamine (Gln) might serve as signals of organic N status that in turn regulate gene expression. To identify genome-wide responses to such organic N signals, Arabidopsis seedlings were transiently treated with ammonium nitrate in the presence or absence of …

Ct Scan Natural History Of Post-Operative Thoracic Aortic Surgery Patients, Jessica Kirk Mar 2008

Ct Scan Natural History Of Post-Operative Thoracic Aortic Surgery Patients, Jessica Kirk

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study evaluated post-operative CT scans to determine the normal postoperative appearance following thoracic aorta surgery. The 188 CT studies in 102 patients were analyzed for presence of perigraft fluid collections and pleural effusions. Fifty-seven of 102 patients (56%) had perigraft fluid at the time of their first postoperative CT scan. The majority of collections disappeared over time but some persisted with 22% scans showing fluid at greater than 24 months post-operatively. Pleural effusions were present on 86% of scans in the first post-operative month and only 9% of scans after 1 year. Pseudoaneurysms occurred in 3 of 48 ascending …

Neogene Evolution Of The Mixed Carbonate-Siliciclastic System In The Gulf Of Papua, Papua New Guinea, Evgueni N. Tcherepanov, André W. Droxler, Philippe Lapointe, Gerald R. Dickens, Sam J. Bentley, Luc Beaufort, Larry C. Peterson, James Daniell, Bradley N. Opdyke

Faculty Publications

This paper outlines the evolution of the late Cenozoic mixed carbonate-siliciclastic depositional system in the Gulf of Papua (GoP), using seismic, gravity, multibeam bathymetry, well data sets, and Landsat imagery. The deposition of the mixed sedimentary sequences was influenced by dynamic interplay of tectonics, eustasy, in situ carbonate production, and siliciclastic sediment supply. The roles of these major factors are estimated during different periods of the GoP margin evolution. The Cenozoic mixed system in the GoP formed in distinct phases. The first phase (Late Cretaceous-Paleocene) was mostly driven by tectonics. Rifting created grabens and uplifted structural blocks which served later …
