Schedule Thinning Following Mand Training: Attempts To Enhance Signaled Delay To Reinforcement, Jamie M. Severtson Apr 2008

Schedule Thinning Following Mand Training: Attempts To Enhance Signaled Delay To Reinforcement, Jamie M. Severtson

Masters Theses

Mand training, a common component of language training programs for children with autism, is associated with several clinical benefits (Sundberg & Michael, 2001), yet mand training sometimes results in high-rate responding that is difficult to maintain. One method of reducing high-rate mands to manageable rates is known as graduated signaled delay to reinforcement. The current investigation involved a series of three studies to evaluate the ability of three independent variables (a) highly preferred toys, (b) signal duration, and (c) schedule thinning methods to enhance signaled delay to reinforcement. The results of the three studies indicate that 7 of the 8 …

Multicultural Experience Enhances Creativity: The When And How, Angela K. Y. Leung, William W. Maddux, Adam D. Galinsky, Chi-Yue Chiu Apr 2008

Multicultural Experience Enhances Creativity: The When And How, Angela K. Y. Leung, William W. Maddux, Adam D. Galinsky, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Many practices aimed at cultivating multicultural competence in educational and organizational settings (e.g., exchange programs, diversity education in college, diversity management at work) assume that multicultural experience fosters creativity. In line with this assumption, the research reported in this article is the first to empirically demonstrate that exposure to multiple cultures in and of itself can enhance creativity. Overall, the authors found that extensiveness of multicultural experiences was positively related to both creative performance (insight learning, remote association, and idea generation) and creativity-supporting cognitive processes (retrieval of unconventional knowledge, recruitment of ideas from unfamiliar cultures for creative idea expansion). Furthermore, …

Infective Endocarditis Chemoprophylaxis For Adults: New Guidelines, Kelvin Kai-Wang To, Chu-Pak Lau, Cyrus-Rustam Kumana

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

The concept of infective endocarditis chemoprophylaxis has undergone dramatic changes in recent few years, as exemplified by the latest guidelines from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) and the American Heart Association (AHA). Although there are minor differences between the two, both guidelines agree that having a dental procedure is not an important risk factor and that chemoprophylaxis is not required except for patients at high risk if they develop infective endocarditis. It is important for cardiologists, dentists and other health care professionals to aware of this change in order not to overprescribe antimicrobial prophylaxis.

A Night In Neverland, Elizabeth Rebecca Beal Apr 2008

A Night In Neverland, Elizabeth Rebecca Beal

English Theses & Dissertations

A Night in Neverland is a collection of five short stories. Each story touches on illusion, fantasy, magical thinking, beauty and unhinged reality, and transformation. Also at the center of this collection is estrangement and identity, and the clash between.

In "A Night in Neverland," a high-school girl creates her own fantastic prom memories despite the dismal realities of the evening, "Somewhere Bright and Clear" follows another teenage girl and three of her friends, during a stolen weekend at her family's lake house, where she's promised her boyfriend something she never wanted to deliver. In "Wonderful, Wonderful" a woman breaks …

Cannabinoids: A Novel Treatment Strategy For Retinal Neurodegenerative Disorders, Sandeep Samudre Apr 2008

Cannabinoids: A Novel Treatment Strategy For Retinal Neurodegenerative Disorders, Sandeep Samudre

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Synthetic and naturally occurring cannabinoids are known to decrease intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucomatous damage to the retina and optic nerve progresses even after therapy to maintain normal intraocular pressure (IOP). Topical application of cannabinoids decreases IOP while not affecting blood pressure or heart rate. Based upon their effects on other tissues, we hypothesize that these analogs reduce IOP and may also confer direct neuroprotective effects on the retina, possibly via CB1 and/or CB2 receptors. The purpose of this study is to determine if the newly synthesized CB agonists, lipid soluble O-1812 (CB 1), and water soluble O-2545 (CB 1

New Findings At Andrahomana Cave, Southeastern Madagascar, David A. Burney, Natalie Vasey, Laurie R. Godfrey, William L. Jungers, Ramilisonina, M. F. Ramarolahy, L. L. Raharivony

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

A remote eolianite cave and sinkhole complex on the southeast coast of Madagascar has played a major role in the history of paleontology in Madagascar. Andrahomana Cave has yielded a rich fossil record of the extinct megafauna. Expeditions in 2000 and 2003 produced a wealth of new material and provided the first systematic information concerning the genesis, stratigraphy, and taphonomy of the site. Recovered bones of one of the most poorly understood extinct large lemurs, Hadropithecus stenognathus, include many skeletal elements previously unknown. Radiocarbon dates show that the site has sampled this disappeared fauna in the midto- late Holocene, but …

A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Educational Needs Of Employers And Non-English Speaking Workers In Arboriculture, Robert M. Ricard, Ana I. Legrand, Diane Wright Hirsch, Tricia Gabany-Guerrero Apr 2008

A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Educational Needs Of Employers And Non-English Speaking Workers In Arboriculture, Robert M. Ricard, Ana I. Legrand, Diane Wright Hirsch, Tricia Gabany-Guerrero

Journal of Extension

Arboricultural employers and non-English speaking workers were surveyed to acquire information about their outreach educational needs. Results suggest that language barriers sometimes reduce job performance and threaten worker safety and relationships. Respondents stated that employee performance would improve if workers received English language and cultural training. Method of education mattered, with face-to-face learner and educator contact as the preferred method. It is recommended that arboriculture employers and outreach educators provide English language and cultural outreach education opportunities to arboriculture workers whose first language is not English, then follow this with arboriculture training and information (such as pesticide safety).

Self-Esteem Assessment Of Adolescents Involved In Horsemanship Activities, Kellee Saunders-Ferguson, Rosemary V. Barnett, Gerald Culen, Saundra Tenbroeck Apr 2008

Self-Esteem Assessment Of Adolescents Involved In Horsemanship Activities, Kellee Saunders-Ferguson, Rosemary V. Barnett, Gerald Culen, Saundra Tenbroeck

Journal of Extension

The study reported here was designed to determine if participation in horsemanship activities is associated with change in self-esteem and other developmental competencies. The study examined 122 adolescents, aged 12-18 years, who participated in the Florida 4-H Horsemanship School during summer 2005. The results found a small but significant change in self-esteem after the adolescents participated in the 6-day residential horsemanship program. It is important to consider the findings of the study when designing a horsemanship school curriculum for adolescents. Equine activities also may provide beneficial results to youth, including increased self-esteem, physical exercise, and positive youth development.

Volunteer Researchers: Moving Beyond Cooperators, Terrell P. Salmon, Ben Faber, Gary Bender, Dave Shaw

Journal of Extension

Engaging volunteer cooperators to perform field research presents a new approach to conducting applied research. We enlisted Extension Service users to conduct research. This allowed for an increased sample size and expanded study area than was possible using traditional approaches. Cooperators received comprehensive training that briefed them on the subject and research protocols. Data were collected via research workbooks and informal written surveys. We obtained acceptable data for demonstrating the efficacy of rodenticide treatment under operational conditions. Unexpectedly, cooperators favored one control method and indicated they would use it in the future, despite no statistical difference between treatment methods.

Evaluation Of An Adult Extension Education Initiative: The Michigan Conservation Stewards Program, Heather A. Van Den Berg, Shari L. Dann Apr 2008

Evaluation Of An Adult Extension Education Initiative: The Michigan Conservation Stewards Program, Heather A. Van Den Berg, Shari L. Dann

Journal of Extension

The Michigan Conservation Stewards Program (CSP), coordinated by Michigan State University Extension, convened a unique group of partners for a new statewide Master Naturalist™ effort. Partners designed a curriculum, implemented a pilot program, and evaluated program processes and impacts. Extension staff used pre- and post-program questionnaires, achieving a 97% program retention rate and an 85% response rate. The CSP attracted a new Extension audience, increased learners' ecosystem knowledge, improved attitudes toward resource management, and fostered skills for accessing ecological information. The CSP achieved its goal of assisting adult learners in gaining skills necessary to complete conservation management volunteer activities.

Rating Current Vermont Equine Industry Issues And Determining If Motivation For Participation In Change Efforts Exists, Ariana Monti, Elizabeth A. Greene Apr 2008

Rating Current Vermont Equine Industry Issues And Determining If Motivation For Participation In Change Efforts Exists, Ariana Monti, Elizabeth A. Greene

Journal of Extension

UVM Extension has played a key role in reaching beyond agricultural circles to develop public awareness regarding the statewide economic impact and importance of the equine industry. In order to continue supporting industry growth, UVM Extension surveyed the areas of current concern for industry participants. Survey results indicate that the current issues of greatest concern to participants were in the areas of insurance and liability, horse park/facilities, land use policies, trail systems, and agricultural use (of land). This project demonstrates a method that can be utilized in any Extension program to identify critical issues and/or to evaluate program effectiveness.

Developing And Utilizing Visual Tools To Assist Pork Producers In Employee Training In The Evaluation Of Sow Body Condition, Robert Fitzgerald, Kenneth Stalder, Locke Karriker, Colin Johnson

Journal of Extension

The article describes development of a bilingual poster to assists pig producers in classifying body condition scores (BCS) in sows. Sows of the lowest body condition score were purchased, fed for 96 days, and photographed as each sow incrementally increased to the maximum BCS of 5. Pictures from two sows of each BCS of 1 through 5 were professionally arranged on a poster and published in a nationally distributed swine magazine. The poster was designed to assist producers in employee training at the farm level. Similar posters could be developed to improve selection and/or management skills in other livestock species.

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Most pancreatic cancer patients present with inoperable disease or develop metastases after surgery. Conventional therapies are usually ineffective in treating metastatic disease. It is evident that novel therapies remain to be developed. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) plays a key role in cancer metastasis, signaling through the TGF-beta type I/II receptors (TbetaRI/II). We hypothesized that targeting TbetaRI/II kinase activity with the novel inhibitor LY2109761 would suppress pancreatic cancer metastatic processes. The effect of LY2109761 has been evaluated on soft agar growth, migration, invasion using a fibroblast coculture model, and detachment-induced apoptosis (anoikis) by Annexin V flow cytometric analysis. The efficacy …

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Publications

“Law and entrepreneurship” is an emerging field of study. Skeptics might wonder whether law and entrepreneurship is a variant of that old canard, the Law of the Horse. In this Essay, we defend law and entrepreneurship against that charge and urge legal scholars to become even more engaged in the wide-ranging scholarly discourse regarding entrepreneurship. In making our case, we argue that research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and law is distinctive. In some instances, legal rules and practices are tailored to the entrepreneurial context, and in other instances, general rules of law find novel expression in the entrepreneurial context. …

Falsity, Insincerity, And The Freedom Of Expression, Mark Spottswood Apr 2008

Falsity, Insincerity, And The Freedom Of Expression, Mark Spottswood

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Three decades ago, the Supreme Court announced that false statements of fact are devoid of constitutional value, without providing either a reasoned explanation for that principle or any supporting citations. This assertion has become one of the most frequently repeated dogmas of First Amendment law and theory, endlessly repeated and never challenged. Disturbingly, this idea has provided the theoretic foundation for a regime in which some speakers can be penalized for even honestly believed factual errors. Even worse, this dogma is flat wrong.

False statements often have value in themselves, and we should protect them even in some situations where …
