Growth Hormone, Prolactin, And Sodium Acetate Have Complex And Non-Uniform Effects On The Lipid Distribution Of A Differentiated Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cell Line, Brent Fujimoto, Daniel G. Peterson
Growth Hormone, Prolactin, And Sodium Acetate Have Complex And Non-Uniform Effects On The Lipid Distribution Of A Differentiated Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cell Line, Brent Fujimoto, Daniel G. Peterson
Animal Science
Non-polar lipids (NPL) accumulate within the mammary epithelial cell during lactation; however there are no reported systematic studies that utilize NPL composition as a sign of differentiation. Additionally, there are no reported systematic studies on the response of a bovine mammary alveolar cell line (MAC-T), to a range of lactogenic hormone concentrations, or different lipogenic substrates. In a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement, the effect of growth hormone (GH; 0, 10, 100 ng/ml), and prolactin (PRL; 0, 5, 10 µg/ml) on the lipid composition of MAC-T was examined using thin layer chromatography. Using the optimal hormone treatment (10 ng/ml GH, …

Carbohydrate Response Element Binding-Protein Is Activated By Elevated Glucose Levels In The Normal Murine Liver Cell Line Nmuli, Jackson Adams, Daniel G. Peterson
Animal Science
Carbohydrate response element (ChRE) binding protein (ChREBP) is a transcription factor that is regulated by intracellular glucose levels and activates several lipogenic genes including acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC). Previous studies of the ChREBP system have used both in vivo models as well as isolated primary hepatocytes. Due to the difficulties in isolation and genetic variability of primary cell culture, we propose the use of a normal murine liver cell line (NMuLi) as a convenient alternative to primary isolated hepatocytes. We show that high (25 mM) but not low (0.5 or 5 mM) glucose activates a luciferase reporter driven by 4 …

Corridors For Wolf Reintroduction To Maine, Will Tyson ('09)
Corridors For Wolf Reintroduction To Maine, Will Tyson ('09)
Atlas of Maine
Maine has been identified as holding potential for the reintroduction of wolves. Due to the long ranges of wolves, it is beneficial to map potential corridors of movement. This project analyzes the best routes for movement from suitable habitats in New York to suitable habitats in Maine. It shows the paths likely to be taken by wolves, based on their affinity for mixed and coniferous forest and their avoidance of areas of high road density. These corridors are identified using least cost path analysis and take into account topography as well as forest and road densities.

To address the functions of FGFR2 and FGFR3 signaling during mandibular skeletogenesis, we over-expressed in the developing chick mandible, replication-competent retroviruses carrying truncated FGFR2c or FGFR3c that function as dominant negative receptors (RCAS-dnFGFR2 and RCAS-dnFGFR3). Injection of RCAS-dnFGFR3 between HH15−20 led to reduced proliferation, increased apoptosis, and decreased differentiation of chondroblasts in Meckel's cartilage. These changes resulted in the formation of a hypoplastic mandibular process and truncated Meckel's cartilage. This treatment also affected the proliferation and survival of osteoprogenitor cells in osteogenic condensations, leading to the absence of five mandibular bones on the injected side. Injection of RCAS-dnFGFR2 between HH15−20 …

When Cultures Collide: The Kanaka Maoli And The Haole Women And The Suppression And Resurgence Of Hawai‘Ian Traditional Beliefs, Roxanne O'Connell
Reason and Respect
The traditional and ritual beliefs of the Kanaka Maoli are intimately connected to Hawaiian identity and the relationship between the person and the universe. Therefore any examination of these, by extension, is an examination of the Kanaka Maoli way of life. This essay examines pre-haole Hawaiian culture, the diminishing of women’s presence and authority during the missionary period through annexation, and the recent women activist voices that have emerged as part of the sovereignty discourse.

Reason and Respect
Religion has been woven into the fabric of societies past and present, and the human desire to reach out to the divine is a very important component of society. The preserved art and architecture from around the world bestows a comprehensive conceptual understanding of the human yearning to connect to the sky with religious intent.

Sit Like A Bell: Sound And The Body In Tibetan Buddhism, Christopher Elford
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Lobsag Khedup, a 32 year-old Tibetan Monk living in a single room at an art center in Zhongdian where he teaches the art of thangka painting, wakes in silence at 6 a.m. He pulls his bedding around him as if to make a nest out of it. It is cold and his action is somehow appropriate to the introversion of the hour. There is no light in the room, no room yet to speak of, just the dull indistinct sense of an interior. He sits up and starts to pray. But to pray isn’t enough, he must make his devotional …

This study investigates perspectives on development held by individuals living in arid and semi-arid areas of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Overall, we find that interventions to meet basic human needs (access to water, health care and education) are the most highly desired. Projects supporting pastoral livelihoods (livestock health and marketing-oriented, restocking and conflict resolution) are second most important, followed by those that support alternatives to pastoralism (cropping, other income generating activities). Econometric analysis indicates that variation in rankings is mostly driven by variation across communities rather than across households within communities, lending support to community-based approaches to priority setting.

In 1988, twenty years ago, Arturo Perez-Reverte wrote a marvelously complex novel entitled El maestro de esgrima (The Fencing Master). The project of that novel was to show how certain traditional Spanish values and attitudes were threatened by contemporary realities. The protagonist, the talented and socially withdrawn Don Jaime de Astarloa, is a gentleman of the ideal "caballero-hidalgo" type, a fencing master, who is nearly killed defending his values, single-handedly, against a major transnational conspiracy being played out during the political turmoil of the late 19th century. Perez-Reverte shows that by then it had become extremely difficult to be an …
