Ciliary Dysfunction In Polycystic Kidney Disease: An Emerging Model With Polarizing Potential, Robert J. Kolb, Surya M. Nauli May 2008

Ciliary Dysfunction In Polycystic Kidney Disease: An Emerging Model With Polarizing Potential, Robert J. Kolb, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The majority of different cell types in the human body have a cilium, a thin rod-like structure of uniquely arranged microtubules that are encapsulated by the surface plasma membrane. The cilium originates from a basal body, a mature centriole that has migrated and docked to the cell surface. The non-motile cilia are microtubule-based organelles that are generally considered sensory structures. The purpose of this review is to discuss the practicality of the ciliary hypothesis as a unifying concept for polycystic kidney disease and to review current literature in the field of cilium biology, as it relates to mechanosensation and planar …

Resistance, Ha Na Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The subject of my work aspires to represent the meaning of individual experiences of psychological and physical trauma. My work often appears as sequential images in an unconventional narrative form, and seeks to consider the intimate interactions and interrelationships between the female body and various objects such as fruit, oysters, pearls, or conversely, needles and ants as well as other symbols that serve to symbolize or objectify the female experience and female sexuality in western culture. The objects themselves are intentionally evocative and symbolically loaded in the tradition of vanitas paintings exploring themes related to repression, resistance, submission, resignation, and …

Dracula: From Historical Voievod To Fictional Vampire Prince, Michael Anthony Vorsino May 2008

Dracula: From Historical Voievod To Fictional Vampire Prince, Michael Anthony Vorsino

History Theses - Archive

Vlad Dracula was a fifteenth century historical prince in Wallachia, a part of modern day Romania. Prince Dracula was an ardent defender of Christendom, and staunch opponent of the expanding Ottoman Empire. However, through the skillful use of the printing press and the masterful work of the author Bram Stoker this man has become associated with the fictional character Count Dracula. This thesis discusses the life and deeds of the historical Prince Vlad Dracula, also known as Tepes, or the Impaler, and his association with the fictional character Count Dracula. This thesis provides an examination of the epic struggle between …

Effect Of Sunlight Intensity And Canopy Coverage On Herbivory In Gunnera Insignis (Gunneraceae), May 2008, Carolyn Rivers May 2008

Effect Of Sunlight Intensity And Canopy Coverage On Herbivory In Gunnera Insignis (Gunneraceae), May 2008, Carolyn Rivers

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Studies on the influence of sunlight on herbivory have generally revealed that increased amounts of leaf damage occur in cool, shaded habitats. This study investigates the effects of both sunlight and canopy coverage on herbivore damage in Gunnera insignis by the undescribed beetle Macrohaltica sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). This beetle is thought to feed on G. insignis because it can obtain secondary metabolites that make it undesirable to predators. In this investigation, all 90 plants studied revealed herbivore damage, with 71% of plants showing evidence of herbivory on the majority of leaves. The highest levels of leaf damage occurred on plants …

The Effect Of Flower Angle On Bat Pollination Of Mucuna Urens (F. Papilionaceae), May 2008, Laura Grieneisen May 2008

The Effect Of Flower Angle On Bat Pollination Of Mucuna Urens (F. Papilionaceae), May 2008, Laura Grieneisen

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between bat pollination and flower angle in Mucuna urens (F. Papilionaceae). To determine the natural variation among M. urens, the angles of 100 M. urens flowers were measured with a protractor to the nearest 5o. The mean angle was -82.45o from the horizon, the mode was -90o, and the range was from -45o to -105o. Approximately one-third of the flowers were tied so that they opened at 90o greater than the natural angle, one-third were tied to open at 90o less than the natural angle, and one-third were left at …

The Promethean, Volume 16, Revelation, 2008, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of nations.
--Revelation 22:2

Minor things can become moments of great revelation when encountered for the first time.
--Margot Fonteyn

This year, The Promethean staff wanted a bold theme to complement last year's theme of Genesis. After much consideration, we felt Revelation would bring in a variety of submissions exploring the nature of endings and epiphanies. To our delight, this proved true, and we could not be more pleased …

Urban Essentials, Ruthie G. Gould May 2008

Urban Essentials, Ruthie G. Gould

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Industrial development throughout the world has led to a global society. Although sharing of information and technology is beneficial in many ways, these global means have also created many issues that are not always contributing to economic and social societies. International business is not only unsustainable for environmental reasons, but it also often means that many unethical decisions are made for the purposes of cheap labor, mass revenue, and other un-amiable intentions. The Urban Essentials project’s purpose is to create an urban area that searches for a solution against these capitalistic means of business. This idea is realized in the …

Contrarian Urges, Jason W. Cave May 2008

Contrarian Urges, Jason W. Cave

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Historically, the default space of architectural design has been one of neutral Cartesian coordinates. However, in other design fields, (such as aeronautical, automotive and naval) the design space is conceived as an environment of forces and motion such as flow, turbulence, viscosity and drag. Architecture, as a static object, has much to gain from a design process that con¬ceives of form in a virtual environment in motion.

The focus of this thesis will be to develop an iterative architectural design process that utilizes techniques in animation software. The purpose of generating architectural form through animation software is to allow architectural …

What Is The Generative Role For Music In Architecture?, Cole A. Wycoff

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The origin of my design thesis project interests had its first identifi able origin on November 2nd, 2006, shortly after attending a lecture on the life and works of Antoine Predock. Predock talked in great detail about not only his designs, but also his design process. The descriptions he provided of his methods and creative intuition began an internal assessment of my own design process, which, in fact, is where this thesis investigation begins. Methodology is central to this framed investigation, and the design thesis project will allow me to develop a latent and more implicit design thinking regarding architecture. …

Toy Stories: Mothers And The Meanings Of Toys, Jennifer Diaz May 2008

Toy Stories: Mothers And The Meanings Of Toys, Jennifer Diaz

Sociology Honors Projects

Past research has studied toy advertisements to explore how modern mothers understand toys, but has failed to talk with moms to see how they actually experience these objects. I interviewed eleven mothers and found they understand play with toys in social terms, yet like and buy toys that require only a small time and energy investment on their part. In the first of these roles, mothers rely on their own experiences when buying new toys, and value “open-ended” toys that inspire creativity, teach on many different levels, and are fun. On the other hand, they still like toys that don’t …

Three types of distillers grains can be produced that vary in moisture content. Ethanol plants may dry some or all of their distillers grains to produce dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS; 90% dry matter [DM]). However, many plants that have a market for wet distillers locally (i.e., Nebraska) may choose not to dry their distillers grains due to cost advantages. Wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) is 30-35% DM. Modified wet distillers grains plus solubles (MWDGS) is 42-50% DM. It is important to note that plants may vary from one another in DM percentage, and may vary both within …

Got Water? Limiting Washington's Stockwatering Exemption To Five Thousand Gallons Per Day, Kara Dunn May 2008

Got Water? Limiting Washington's Stockwatering Exemption To Five Thousand Gallons Per Day, Kara Dunn

Washington Law Review

In Washington, a comprehensive groundwater code governs groundwater withdrawals and use. This regulatory scheme protects water users, minimizes disputes over water rights, and maximizes the beneficial use of public water resources. Despite these protections, groundwater resources are declining in many parts of the state. Washington exempts certain types of small withdrawals from the groundwater code’s regulations, including water for livestock. Conflicting interpretations of this stock-watering exemption have created uncertainty over whether exempt stock-watering withdrawals are unlimited, or are limited to 5000 gallons per day. This Comment analyzes the conflicting interpretations of the groundwater exemption statute under Washington’s rules of statutory …

The Art Of Loving In The Classroom : A Defence Of Affective Pedagogy., Allan Patience May 2008

The Art Of Loving In The Classroom : A Defence Of Affective Pedagogy., Allan Patience

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This essay proposes a defence of a form of teaching eroded by what Sennet (2006) calls ‘the culture of the new capitalism’. The term coined for the form under consideration here is ‘affective pedagogy.’ Affective pedagogy is evident in teachers who: • value a discipline (or disciplines) and their associated practices; • value imparting them to students; • challenge students’ learning achievements while respecting their developing intellects; • assess students’ academic progress transparently and constructively; • encourage students to move beyond their knowledge comfort zones; and • engage students in ‘dramatic friendship’ .

Evidence indicates that failure of nuclear transfer (NT) embryos to develop normally can be attributed, at least partially, to the use of differentiated cells as the donor karyoplast. Blastocyst production and development to term of cloned embryos has been hypothesized to differ between population doublings of the same cell line as a consequence of changes in the levels of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) and methylated DNA during in vitro culture. The objective of this study was to determine embryo production, developmental potential, and gene expression patterns of prehatched and posthatched embryos generated using donor cells with different levels of DNMT1 …

Theses

The Fridge is a Graduate Thesis film about how fruits and vegetables on the top shelf of the fridge learn to cohabitate peacefully and appreciate their differences after a battle over a tomato. This film is a 3d computer animation. I primarily used Autodesk Maya 8.5 for the production, with the aid of Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Soundtrack Pro, and Premiere for some of the pre and post-production work. The following paper is a description of the aesthetic development of my thesis project. I will address the original concept and technical goals, the production pipeline and creation of the film, …

Nanomaterials And Nanotechnologies: Approaching The Crest Of This Big Wave, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Nanomaterials are typically considered as solid physical structures that comprise grain boundaries at the resolution of less than 100 nanometers, whereby nanotechnologies are depicted as dealing with the design of various applications based on employing the former. Some of the essential features of nanomaterials and the scientific approaches to their investigation are discussed in the course of this work. The real reason for the current scientific and technological interest in the physical effects at nanoscale is linked with the historic trend of refinement of human knowledge and of the corresponding ability to manipulate with the structural patterns of the Universe. …
