Pcr-Ddge Comparison Of Fecal Bacteria From Captive And Wild Populations Of The Endangered San Esteban Island Chuckwalla (Sauromalus Varius), Tina Kelley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Most modern reptiles are carnivorous or insectivorous, whereas less than 2% of the >7,800 currently recognized species are considered to be herbivorous. Of these, herbivory is confined entirely to lizards; less than 3% of known lizard species eat significant amounts of plants. Most, if not all, herbivorous animals utilize a population of symbiotic microorganisms which can break down plant structural polymers. This study analyzes the bacterial populations from fecal/uric acid deposits of wild and captive samples of the endangered, herbivorous San Esteban chuckwalla (Sauromalus varius: Iguanidae). Substrate and diet samples were also analyzed. Most studies of digestive symbionts use indirect …

Bovine Oocytes And Early Embryos Express Staufen And Elavl Rna-Binding Proteins., M D Calder, P Madan, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

RNA-binding proteins (RBP) influence RNA editing, localization, stability and translation and may contribute to oocyte developmental competence by regulating the stability and turnover of oogenetic mRNAs. The expression of Staufen 1 and 2 and ELAVL1, ELAVL2 RNA-binding proteins during cow early development was characterized. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were collected from slaughterhouse ovaries, matured, inseminated and subjected to embryo culture in vitro. Oocyte or preimplantation embryo pools were processed for RT-PCR and whole-mount immunofluorescence analysis of mRNA expression and protein distribution. STAU1 and STAU2 and ELAVL1 mRNAs and proteins were detected throughout cow preimplantation development from the germinal vesicle (GV) oocyte to …

This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen

Faculty Publications

This essay examines the benefits and disadvantages of using imagination as a method of historical research in the archive. Employing Jean-Paul Sartre's notion of “image-consciousness” in The Psychology of Imagination, imagination is defined and explored as a form of perception based upon temporal absence or suspension. This method is then discussed in relation to the exhibition “Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women” (2006), curated by the author with artist Isabelle Massu. The installation was assembled with the cooperation of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and traveled from Marseille (2005-06) to San Francisco (2007). The author …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

As the concern for quality public education In America continues to grow, parents, educators, and citizens seek alternative methods for meeting students' needs. My Intent for this design thesis project is to explore one such method: the placement of an educational facility In a non-traditional setting. Whether or not this method actually Improves public education is not the focus of my project; instead, the development and design of a facility that promotes learning, encourages conservation, enhances creative problem-solving and forward thinking, and integrates real world situations In an educational context is the focus of my thesis. The fulfillment of these …

Panda-Monium: A Panda Environment For The Henry Doorly Zoo, Roseann I. M. Masek

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The project that I am proposing to accomplish would be to design a Panda Exhibit located at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. John Armknecht from Stanley How Architects in Omaha has been contacted for consultation and mentoring purposes since their firm handles the Zoo’s designs. Previously he has also helped another student with his thesis design for the expansion of the Gorilla Complex, and he said he would be glad to help out again. Work has preliminarily begun on the panda design by their firm; however, only the site location has been decided. Over the summer I would …

Adaptability In Architecture, Lucas J. Kielion May 2008

Adaptability In Architecture, Lucas J. Kielion

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

For too long, architecture has stood as an expression of permanence, recording a specific moment in history. This project begins with an idea that the adaptation of architecture is eminent, thus changing the process in which we design. The information age resulted in a highly mobile society, where modernization became more generic, the specificity of place changed, and time became more abstract. Mechanic invention supplied ‘generic’ standards to improve common application for tools. Strategies of a general building system could be familiarized with a local place, inherent with the idea of versatility. Through this design, it is important not to …

Submercial: Research At Its Closest Proximity, Kristin L. Ubben

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Located off the coast of Northern California, just west of Eureka and Humboldt Bay, it is the intention of mine to design a site specific research facility to primarily study oceanic activity. Responding to the planet’s current environmental conditions, I feel it necessary for solutions to manifest themselves within the realm of sustainable, as well as in an interest for future energy sources. The planet’s oceans hold one possible answer for this. By committing to a project that focuses on researching water at an extremely close proximity, it will also strive for the ability to be dependent on water for …

Traditional Natural Resource Use And Development In Northeast Thailand, Christie Moulton May 2008

Traditional Natural Resource Use And Development In Northeast Thailand, Christie Moulton

Senior Honors Projects

This paper explores the effects of development projects on traditional natural resource use in three communities in Northeast Thailand, a region known as Isan. I interviewed villagers in each community and asked them to describe their environmental perceptions, management practices and livelihood strategies. Participants described several subsistence livelihoods that have traditionally been present in Isan. These include rice farming, fishing, community forestry, and wetland use. Residents from the three communities all described various cultural activities, knowledge systems, and religious ceremonies that are closely tied to their local resources. Raising silk worms, making clay pots, and performing rituals for a spirit …

Midnight Dawning: A Reconciliation, Astrid Drew May 2008

Midnight Dawning: A Reconciliation, Astrid Drew

Senior Honors Projects

Within the past several years, best-seller lists have witnessed a growth in popularity of memoirs or creative non-fiction writing. Being an avid bookstore wanderer, I noticed this influx and wondered about the reasons behind it. What is so appealing about this genre to readers, and why do people write these kinds of books? What sort of mental processes within the author’s mind are expressed on the page, and how do those processes reflect or interact with the reader? Is it all merely cathartic writing/reading? Or is it a mode of solidifying one’s identity and place in the world, both for …

Harnessing Knowledge To Ensure Food Safety: Opportunities To Improve The Nation's Food Safety Information Infrastructure, Michael R. Taylor, Michael B. Batz

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Those working in the food industry face an abundance of information generated by diverse institutions and individuals.

Ensuring the safety of food is critically important to the public's health and a challenge for policy-makers seeking to enhance the government's role in this arena. Although the food industry has an inherent duty to make food safe, the effectiveness of what they do is highly dependent on the quality of the information they receive on potential hazards and good practices.

In this context, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded a project under the auspices of the Food Safety Research Consortium to examine …

Subordination And The Fortuity Of Our Circumstances, Sergio J. Campos May 2008

Subordination And The Fortuity Of Our Circumstances, Sergio J. Campos

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The antisubordination principle exists at the margins of equality law. This Article seeks to revive the antisubordination principle by taking a fresh look at its structure and underlying justification. First, the Article provides an account of the harm of subordination that focuses on one's position in society, rejecting the focus on groups popular in the existing antisubordination literature. Second, it argues for a theory of state obligation that goes beyond both the existing state action doctrine of the Equal Protection Clause and the failure to protect doctrine associated with Charles Black. The Article argues instead that the antisubordination principle mandates …

Human–Wildlife Conflict And Gender In Protected Area Borderlands: A Case Study Of Costs, Perceptions, And Vulnerabilities From Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal), India, Monica V. Ogra

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Human–wildlife conflict (HWC) is a growing problem for communities located at the borders of protected areas. Such conflicts commonly take place as crop-raiding events and as attack by wild animals, among other forms. This paper uses a feminist political ecology approach to examine these two problems in an agricultural village located at the border of Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand (formerly Uttaranchal), India. Specifically, it investigates the following three questions: What are the “visible” and “hidden” costs of such conflict with wildlife? To what extent are these costs differentially borne by men and women? How do villagers perceive any such …

Regenerative Peripheral Neurointerfacing Of Upper Extremity Prostheses, Kshitija Garde May 2008

Regenerative Peripheral Neurointerfacing Of Upper Extremity Prostheses, Kshitija Garde

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Current robotic prosthetic devices provide limited functionality to the user as they rely on gross myogenic control and lack critical sensory feedback needed for fine movement control. Interfacing the nervous system with the robotic prosthesis would facilitate amputees to control them naturally, in resemblance to the human hand. Functional neuro-electrode connections have been demonstrated in the brain and peripheral nervous system; however, gliosis, micro hemorrhages, axonopathy and excessive inflammation limit their long-term use. We evaluated the possibility of enticing peripheral nerve regeneration through a multi-electrode array with an open architecture as an alternative to enhance longevity of nerve-electrode interface. Regenerative …
