The Spatial Memory Of African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana): Durability, Interference, And Response Biases, Robert H.I. Dale May 2008

The Spatial Memory Of African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana): Durability, Interference, And Response Biases, Robert H.I. Dale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Women and elephants never forget an injury.

-Saki (H. H. Munro), "Reginald on besetting sins," in Reginald (1904)

I am not sure whether the satirist H. H. Munro believed Saki's claim, although it may well be true (at least with regard to elephants). This chapter will examine some characteristics of elephant memory more systematically than did Saki.

In general, it is to an animal's advantage to remember some aspects (usually the stable features) of a situation for long periods and to remember other aspects (usually the unstable features) only temporarily. Consistent with recent arguments questioning the value of cognitive constructs …

Light Along The River, Matt Turner May 2008

Light Along The River, Matt Turner

All Theses

Light along the River is a creative manuscript featuring a collection of ten short stories that loosely connect with each other. The collection is separated into two parts, with each part occurring in a three day span. The stories focus on a group of characters who live in a fictional present-day small Southern town. Each story is a glimpse into a certain character's life. Description of detail is heavily focused on, as well as the actions of each character. Descriptive images and detailed scenes, instead of a specific narrator, are used prevalently in order to tell the story. This collection …

Revisiting A Model Of Ontogenetic Growth: Estimating Model Parameters From Theory And Data, Melanie E. Moses, Chen Hou, William H. Woodruff, Geoffrey B. West, Jeffery C. Nekola, Wenyun Zuo, James H. Brown May 2008

Revisiting A Model Of Ontogenetic Growth: Estimating Model Parameters From Theory And Data, Melanie E. Moses, Chen Hou, William H. Woodruff, Geoffrey B. West, Jeffery C. Nekola, Wenyun Zuo, James H. Brown

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ontogenetic growth model (OGM) of West et al. provides a general description of how metabolic energy is allocated between production of new biomass and maintenance of existing biomass during ontogeny. Here, we reexamine the OGM, make some minor modifications and corrections, and further evaluate its ability to account for empirical variation on rates of metabolism and biomass in vertebrates both during ontogeny and across species of varying adult body size. We show that the updated version of the model is internally consistent and is consistent with other predictions of metabolic scaling theory and empirical data. The OGM predicts not …

Moving Melodies: Contemporary Music Culture Of Mongolian Nomads And Opportunities For Contextualization, Erica Marin Logan May 2008

Moving Melodies: Contemporary Music Culture Of Mongolian Nomads And Opportunities For Contextualization, Erica Marin Logan

Masters Theses

There are many obstacles to sharing Christ with nomadic peoples. Obstacles include distance of travel from one family group to another, the mobility of these family groups, the finances and investment to locate the families every season, the lack of fellowship and discipleship materials for those that do become Believers, and the peer pressure that these Believers face in the midst of this lack. What resources can be offered to fill this gap? How can the Gospel be communicated in a relevant and engaging way to a people group that is spread out across hundreds of miles, resistant to sedentary …

Cdc45 Function Alters Cell Sensitivity To Dna Topoisomerase I Poisons, Cynthia Sue Lancaster May 2008

Cdc45 Function Alters Cell Sensitivity To Dna Topoisomerase I Poisons, Cynthia Sue Lancaster

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Eukaryotic DNA topoisomerase I (Top1) is a highly conserved enzyme that functions to manage the torsional strain of DNA during cellular processes such as transcription, replication, chromatid condensation and recombination. The enzyme binds duplex DNA and through a series of strand cleavage and religation reactions removes positive or negative supercoils relieving torsional strain. Top1 is the sole cellular target of the anticancer agent camptothecin, which stabilizes the covalent complex. CPT cytotoxicity is S-phase dependent. It has been suggested that the mechanism of this S-phase toxicity is due to the advancing replication forks either colliding with the stabilized drug-enzyme-DNA intermediate or …

Factors Influencing Topotecan Cns Penetration In Mouse Models, Jun Shen May 2008

Factors Influencing Topotecan Cns Penetration In Mouse Models, Jun Shen

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Camptothecin analogs such as topotecan are currently tested in clinical trials for brain tumors. However the clinical outcome is far below the expectations, which are derived from the promising preclinical studies. This discrepancy could be partially attributed to the presence of two barrier systems in the brain, the blood brain barrier (BBB) and blood cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier (BCB). Further investigations have demonstrated multiple ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are present at the two barriers. Camptothecin analogs are well known substrates for several of the transporters. This work defined the role of two ABC transporters, Bcrp1 and P-gp in determination of …

Three-Dimensional Scaffolds For Mammary Epithelial Cell Growth, Megan M. Barry May 2008

Three-Dimensional Scaffolds For Mammary Epithelial Cell Growth, Megan M. Barry

Master's Theses

Mammary epithelial cells are highly efficient secreting cells. This natural phenomenon has triggered research efforts to focus on using these cells to assist in the production of viable liquids. The application of this technology is nearly endless. If developed successfully, mammary epithelial cells could be used by industries from farming to pharmacology.

The feasibility of culturing epithelial mammary cells which secrete within a three-dimensional scaffold was investigated and is documented within this paper. A biocompatible film with suitable mechanical characteristics and processing properties for use in a bioreactor was developed through multiple iterations. The film that was developed also withstands …

(Trade) Secrets, Secrets Are No Fun—Especially When Disclosed Through Foia Requests To Everyone, Daniel B. Goldman May 2008

(Trade) Secrets, Secrets Are No Fun—Especially When Disclosed Through Foia Requests To Everyone, Daniel B. Goldman

Seventh Circuit Review

While the Freedom of Information Act (“FOIA”) contains a provision exempting trade secrets from public information requests, FOIA was enacted to serve policies essentially antithetical to those of trade secrets—allowing individuals to access records collected by governmental agencies. The FOIA trade secret exemption is discretionary, allowing an agency, rather than a party submitting information to the government, to determine what constitutes a trade secret. Consequently, government agencies often disclose information through FOIA requests that are considered to be trade secrets by the information’s owners. One such instance arose in the Seventh Circuit in Patriot Homes, Inc. v. Forest River Housing, …

Hiram Bingham’S Expedition And The Peruvian Response: A Connecticut Yanqui In The Land Of The Incas, Aaron Wiener

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

On June 15, 1915, the renowned Yale historian-turned-explorer Hiram Bingham III returned from a three-week trek along the Salcantay trail to find his Ollantaytambo headquarters occupied by four hostile young Peruvian men. In the name of the Instituto Histórico del Cuzco, they accused him of violating the prefect’s decree prohibiting the excavation of Inca sites in the vicinity. Their suspicions were not unwarranted. Lining the walls of the office were large wooden cases, full of archaeological specimens. They demanded to investigate the contents of the boxes, charging that Bingham was smuggling gold and treasures out of Peru by way of …

Extending Native Winter Pasture Use With Spring Grazing Practices, A. J. Smart, R. Schafer, R. N. Gates

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Improving profitability will help sustain the economic viability of ranch operations. Feed costs typically represent well over half of annual cow-calf production costs. Two things, 1) grazing strategies aimed at increasing the proportion of feed supplied through grazing and 2) decreasing reliance on high-cost harvested forages, have the potential to improve profit.

All my life I have always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. As I come to the last stretch of my bachelor’s degree I can look back on all the moments in school and in the workplace where my path was elusive and I longed for expression. In creating these two books I have shaped a platform where people across the globe can come together and share their voice. There are times when we all feel that no one is listening to us, and no one understands us. Over the last few months I have talked with people …
