Trauma sustained to the central nervous system is a debilitating problem for thousands of people worldwide. Neuronal regeneration within the central nervous system is hindered by several factors, making a multi-faceted approach necessary. Two factors contributing to injury are the irregular geometry of injured sites and the absence of tissue to hold potential nerve guides and drug therapies. Biocompatible hydrogels, injectable at room temperature, that rapidly solidify at physiological temperatures (37°C) are beneficial materials that could hold nerve guidance channels in place and be loaded with therapeutic agents to aid wound healing. Our studies have shown that thermo reversible methylcellulose …

The Transition From Unincorporated Community To Municipality In The South Valley, Joshua M. Akers
BBER Publications
The South Valley is a diverse area at the heart of the rural-urban interface in the Middle Rio Grande Valley. The proposition of forming a municipality in this area is full of possibility and rife with challenges. It is the intent of this report to offer some assistance with the process of incorporation and to offer an examination, however brief and incomplete, of issues of concern that will accompany any incorporation. The report consists of three parts: a historical review of incorporation in New Mexico and the Southwestern United States; an examination of geographical, social and political issues unique to …

Tube Realignment For Patellar Luxation Repair In Dogs, Chalika Wangdee, Marissak Kalpravidh
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Grade II patellar luxations in dogs were repaired by trochlear wedge recession in 5 stifles (group 1) and by proximal tube realignment in 5 stifles (group 2). A combination of the two techniques was used to correct grade II luxation in 10 stifles (group 3) and grade III luxation in 5 stifles (group 4). The position of the patella, weight bearing, and animal gait were postoperatively examined for 12 weeks. Satisfactory results were observed in 1(20%), 3(60%), and 9(90%) stifles with grade II luxation in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Good recovery from grade III luxation was observed in …

Introduction
As pulmonary artery obstruction results in proliferation of the bronchial circulation in a variety of species, we investigated this angiogenic response using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and micro-CT.
Materials and methods
After surgical ligation of the left pulmonary artery of rats, they were imaged at 10, 20, or 40 days post-ligation. Before imaging, technetium-labeled macroaggregated albumin (99mTc MAA) was injected into the aortic arch (IA) labeling the systemic circulation. SPECT/micro-CT imaging was performed, the image volumes were registered, and activity in the left lung via the bronchial circulation was used as a marker of bronchial …

Error Related Negativity In Parkinson’S Disease: A Test Of The Validity Of Mesencephalicdopamine Contributions To Ern, Craig A. Siders
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A model proposed by Holroyd and Coles (2002) stating that error related negativity (ERN) is caused by a decrease in mesencephalic dopamine output to the ACC was tested. A group of individuals with Parkinson's disease (N = 16) and an age and education matched group free from neurological disorder (N = 16) completed a card guessing task where the magnitude of monetary penalties and rewards for incorrect and correct answers was varied by block. Individuals with Parkinson's disease were tested after an overnight washout from dopamingeric medications.
The amplitude of the mid-frontal negativity elicited by feedback was analyzed with spatial …

Respondents reported needing training in disaster preparedness, in applying subject matter expertise in disaster situations, and in assisting coworkers to cope with stress.
Extension Efforts Enhance Lowcountry South Carolina Conservation Forestry, Thomas J. Straka, Robert M. Franklin
Extension Efforts Enhance Lowcountry South Carolina Conservation Forestry, Thomas J. Straka, Robert M. Franklin
Journal of Extension
Conservation forestry involves the use of low-cost forest management practices to enhance biodiversity. It must be accomplished at the landscape level (over large areas of land). We report on a program to encourage conservation forestry on South Carolina's coastal plain. Extension foresters developed three major conservation forestry strategies to encourage conversion to longleaf pine, prescribed fire, and better bottomland hardwood management. Forest owners expect financial returns, so each strategy was analyzed for financial results; all three showed favorable returns. Extension foresters set up demonstration areas and used workshops to educate natural resource professionals and forest owners on these practices.

Demyelinating And Nondemyelinating Strains Of Mouse Hepatitis Virus Differ In Their Neural Cell Tropism., Jayasri Das Sarma, Kathryn Iacono, Lilli Gard, Ryan Marek, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Michael Koval, Susan R. Weiss
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Some strains of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) can induce chronic inflammatory demyelination in mice that mimics certain pathological features of multiple sclerosis. We have examined neural cell tropism of demyelinating and nondemyelinating strains of MHV in order to determine whether central nervous system (CNS) cell tropism plays a role in demyelination. Previous studies demonstrated that recombinant MHV strains, isogenic other than for the spike gene, differ in the extent of neurovirulence and the ability to induce demyelination. Here we demonstrate that these strains also differ in their abilities to infect a particular cell type(s) in the brain. Furthermore, there is …

A New Model For Hemoglobin Ingestion And Transport By The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum., Michelle D Lazarus, Timothy G Schneider, Theodore F Taraschi
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
The current model for hemoglobin ingestion and transport by intraerythrocytic Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites shares similarities with endocytosis. However, the model is largely hypothetical, and the mechanisms responsible for the ingestion and transport of host cell hemoglobin to the lysosome-like food vacuole (FV) of the parasite are poorly understood. Because actin dynamics play key roles in vesicle formation and transport in endocytosis, we used the actin-perturbing agents jasplakinolide and cytochalasin D to investigate the role of parasite actin in hemoglobin ingestion and transport to the FV. In addition, we tested the current hemoglobin trafficking model through extensive analysis of serial …

The Gothic Genre Beyond Borders: Mathew Lewis’S Influence On José De Espronceda’S El Estudiante De Salamanca, Francisco Fernández
The Gothic Genre Beyond Borders: Mathew Lewis’S Influence On José De Espronceda’S El Estudiante De Salamanca, Francisco Fernández
The Coastal Review
Once the Gothic crossed the Spanish border, a number of writers were influenced by this genre. This is the case of José de Espronceda in his El estudiante de Salamanca (1840). Influenced by Matthew Lewis’sThe Monk, Espronceda not only uses Gothic conventions when he creates a protagonist haunted by a ghost but also subverts them by reversing the villain-victim relationship for the sake of poetic justice. As a result, the development of the plot is more strongly justified, for the hero’s sins are, after all, what lead him to his tragic end.
Housing Backyard Chickens, David D. Frame
Housing Backyard Chickens, David D. Frame
All Current Publications
Owning a small flock of chickens is increasing in popularity, particularly in areas where local ordinances prohibit larger domestic animals, but allow for birds and/or small animals. Chickens not only furnish a ready source of home-grown meat and eggs, but also provide great pleasure as exhibition stock and even as pets. The purpose of this fact sheet is to give an overview of basic housing principles for small flocks of chickens.
Centipedes, Erin W. Hodgson, Paul Bingham, Alan H. Roe
Centipedes, Erin W. Hodgson, Paul Bingham, Alan H. Roe
All Current Publications
Centipedes are long, slender arthropods in the class Chilopoda. Centipede means “hundred feet” because they appear to have many legs. Insects, millipedes and arachnids are close relatives. Centipedes should be considered beneficial because they are exclusively predatory. They eat a wide variety of smaller invertebrates, including insects. However, centipedes may be considered a nuisance to homeowners when they are found inside.

To advance our knowledge on the snake venom composition and transcripts expressed in venom gland at the molecular level, we constructed a cDNA library from venom gland of Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma for the generation of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) database. From the randomly sequenced 2,112 independent clones, we have obtained ESTs for 1,309 (62%) cDNAs which showed significant deduced amino acid sequence similarity (scores > 80) to previously characterized proteins in NCBI database. Ribosomal proteins make up 47 clones (2%) and the remaining 756 (36%) cDNAs represent either unknown identity or show BLASTX sequence identity scores of < 80 with known GenBank accessions. The most highly expressed gene encoding phospholipase A2 (PLA2) accounting for 35% of A. p. leucostoma venom …

The Architecture Of Instructional Theory, Andrew S. Gibbons, Clint P. Rogers
Faculty Publications
This chapter joins a discussion of instructional theory that has been ongoing for nearly a century. It departs in some ways from prior discussions: (1) it considers instructional theory as a species of technological theory rather than as a type of scientific theory, a view expressed more fully elsewhere (Gibbons, 2003a), (2) it adopts the viewpoint articulated in earlier chapters of this book that there are multiple distinct bodies of technological theory that pertain to the work of instructional designers, (3) it attempts to articulate a particular view of the nature of two of those bodies of theory by describing …

Altered glutamate signaling contributes to a myriad of neural disorders, including schizophrenia. While synaptic levels are intensely studied, nonvesicular release mechanisms, including cystine–glutamate exchange, maintain high steady-state glutamate levels in the extrasynaptic space. The existence of extrasynaptic receptors, including metabotropic group II glutamate receptors (mGluR), pose nonvesicular release mechanisms as unrecognized targets capable of contributing to pathological glutamate signaling. We tested the hypothesis that activation of cystine–glutamate antiporters using the cysteine prodrug N-acetylcysteine would blunt psychotomimetic effects in the rodent phencyclidine (PCP) model of schizophrenia. First, we demonstrate that PCP elevates extracellular glutamate in the prefrontal cortex, an effect …

The Role Of Short Term Synamptic Plasticity In Temporal Coding Of Neuronal Networks, Lakshmi Chandrasekaran
Dissertations
Short term synaptic plasticity is a phenomenon which is commonly found in the central nervous system. It could contribute to functions of signal processing namely, temporal integration and coincidence detection by modulating the input synaptic strength. This dissertation has two parts. First we study the effects of short term synaptic plasticity in enhancing coincidence detecting ability of neurons in the avian auditory brainstem. Coincidence detection means a target neuron has a higher firing rate when it receives simultaneous inputs from different neurons as opposed to inputs with large phase delays. This property is used by birds in sound localization. When …

Appropriation Of Privacy Management Within Social Networking Sites, Catherine Dwyer
Dissertations
Social networking sites have emerged as one of the most widely used types of interactive systems, with memberships numbering in the hundreds of millions around the globe. By providing tools for their members to manage an ever-changing set of relationships, social networking sites push a constant expansion of social boundaries. These sites place less emphasis on tools that limit social boundaries to enable privacy.
The rapid expansion of online social boundaries has caused privacy shockwaves. Privacy offline is enabled by constraints of time and space. Online, powerful search engines and long term digital storage means private data have no expiration …
