A Comparison Of Several Algorithms And Models For Analyzing Multivariate Normal Data With Missing Responses, Mojtaba Ganjali, H. Ranji
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we compare some modern algorithms i.e. Direct Maximization of the Likelihood (DML), the EM algorithm, and Multiple Imputation (MI) for analyzing multivariate normal data with missing responses. We also compare two approaches for modeling incomplete data (1) ignoring missing data and (2) joint modeling of response and non-response mechanisms. Several types of Software which can be used to implement the above algorithms are also mentioned. We used these algorithms for a simulation study and to analyze a data set where outliers affect the parameter estimates and final conclusion. As the variance of the estimates cannot be obtained …

Sequences, Annotation And Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Of The Major Histocompatibility Complex In The Domestic Cat, Naoya Yuhki, James C. Mullikin, Thomas W. Beck, Robert M. Stephens, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
Two sequences of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) regions in the domestic cat, 2.976 and 0.362 Mbps, which were separated by an ancient chromosome break (55–80 MYA) and followed by a chromosomal inversion were annotated in detail. Gene annotation of this MHC was completed and identified 183 possible coding regions, 147 human homologues, possible functional genes and 36 pseudo/unidentified genes) by GENSCAN and BLASTN, BLASTP RepeatMasker programs. The first region spans 2.976 Mbp sequence, which encodes six classical class II antigens (three DRA and three DRB antigens) lacking the functional DP, DQ regions, nine antigen processing molecules (DOA/DOB, DMA/DMB, TAPASIN, and …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was a cross-sectional survey of the hypertension (HTN) knowledge and risk behaviors of Black Seventh-day Adventists (SDA) in London. Recruitment took take place in 17 predominantly Black SDA churches in London. A questionnaire assessed knowledge and lay-beliefs about HTN and perceptions towards HTN using the health belief model (HBM) constructs of susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy. Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale was incorporated into the questionnaire. Blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference were and current lifestyles practices were evaluated for the presence of HTN risk factors.
Of the 312 volunteers, ages 25 to 79, 55% were born …
Effect Of Long-Term Hypoxia On Myometrial Contractility In The Pregnant Sheep, Timothy Kimo Arakawa
Effect Of Long-Term Hypoxia On Myometrial Contractility In The Pregnant Sheep, Timothy Kimo Arakawa
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous research from our laboratory has shown that myometrial contractility is reduced in pregnant sheep exposed to long-term hypoxia (LTH). The studies in this dissertation examined the effect of LTH on various aspects of Ca2 regulation, large-conductance, Ca2+ activated (BK) channels activity and protein expression, and cGMP-depended protein kinase (PKG) activity. Myometrium was collected from near-term pregnant sheep exposed to high altitude-associated LTH and from normoxic pregnant controls. After pretreatment with 10-8 M oxytocin (OT), circular and longitudinal myometrial strips were treated with nifedipine (L-type Ca2+ channel blocker), ruthenium red, ryanodine (blockers of IPssensitive stores), 2-Nitro-4-carboxyphenyI-N,N-diphenyIcarbamate …
Response Of Endothelial Cells To Stressors: The Impact Of Aging And Diabetes, Katie Mclellan
Response Of Endothelial Cells To Stressors: The Impact Of Aging And Diabetes, Katie Mclellan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Preliminary research indicates there is some impairment of the endothelial cells to respond to single stressors such as local heat, shear stress, and global heat in older people and people who have diabetes. The response of the skin blood flow to local heat is an indicator of the endothelial cells ability to cope with stress. In addition, factors such as thicker subcutaneous fat and skin moisture may impair the skin’s ability to dissipate heat. For older people and people with diabetes, this endothelial dysfunction may cause an even more diminished response to multiple stressors. However, no studies have examined the …
Behavioral And Physiological Ecology Of Scorpion Venom Expenditure: Stinging, Spraying, And Venom Regeneration, Zia Nisani
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In this dissertation, I reviewed the functional aspects of venom from a behavioral perspective to develop a comprehensive understanding of the behavioral ecology of venom. To explore the behavioral and physiological ecology of venom expenditure by scorpions, I conducted four studies of the medically significant Buthid scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus. The first two experiments revealed that scorpions regulate their venom expenditure during defensive stinging and squirting in the most complex manner yet described for any venomous organism. When stinging, these scorpions can choose between delivering a dry or wet sting. Should they deliver a wet sting, they meter the volume …

Factors That Affect Performance On Executive Functioning After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Sapna Mahesh Patel
Factors That Affect Performance On Executive Functioning After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Sapna Mahesh Patel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Research suggests that individuals who undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) experience declines in neuropsychological functioning post-operatively. This decline has been observed in up to 80% of patients early after surgery, and in up to 30% of patients after six months. Many studies have examined the potential effects of CABG on neuropsychological functioning in general, and numerous studies have found that executive functions are impaired in particular. However, none have examined what factors contribute to observed executive dysfunction after CABG. This study investigated the role of memory functions on executive functions in a selected sample of patients undergoing CABG. This …

Neuronal Connections From The Cervix To The Spinal Cord Before Parturition, Mary Medina Groves
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
By the day before birth, the density of nerve fibers in the cervix has increased compared to earlier in pregnancy or in nonpregnant mice. Similar findings are reported in parturient women. To test the hypothesis that connections between the cervix and spinal cord are enhanced by term, the cervix of nonpregnant and time-dated pregnant mice (day 15 or 18 post-breeding) was injected with pseudorabies virus (PRV), a trans-synaptic retrograde neural tract tracer. Mice were euthanized and perfused 5 days later. The spinal cord and cervix were removed and postfixed overnight, immersed in sucrose, and cryostat sections through the thoracic to …

Novel Binding Domains Mediate Binding Of Hpv 16 E6 To Fadd And Procaspase 8, Sandy S. Tungteakkhun
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
To evade the host response to infection, viruses have developed means to survive and propagate. HPV 16, a causative agent of cervical cancer and of some cases of oropharyngeal cancers, is one example. We have reported that the early viral protein E6 binds to proteins necessary for propagation of the apoptotic signal following receptor/ligand interactions, such as those mediated by FADD DED and procaspase 8 DED. E6 expression leads to the dose-dependent accelerated degradation of FADD and the protection of E6-expressing cells from Fas-induced apoptosis. Surprisingly, the splice isoforms of E6, E6large and E6*, affect the stability of procaspase …
Mechanisms Of T Helper Cell Modulation In A Simulated Space Radiation Environment, Asma Rizvi
Mechanisms Of T Helper Cell Modulation In A Simulated Space Radiation Environment, Asma Rizvi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Exposure to solar particle events (SPEs) poses the most serious threat to astronaut health. Due to this radiation environment, exploration of the solar system beyond Earth’s orbit entails many risks for the crew on these deep space missions. Depression or dysfunction of the immune system is a major concern due to its high radio-sensitivity; potential consequences include overwhelming infection, development of cancer, fibrosis, and poor wound healing. Astronauts are also exposed to low dose/low dose rate (LDR) radiation. A three month stay at the international space station exposes them to ~ 0.05 Gy of radiation.
C57BL/6 mice received LDR gamma-radiation …

A Case-Study Based Course On "Device Evaluation And Fda Approval", Kristen O'Halloran Cardinal
Biomedical Engineering
Preclinical evaluation of new devices and therapies is an integral part of research and development in the medical device industry, and the regulatory process for FDA approval is a major driving force behind much that goes on in a company setting. A large number of graduating biomedical engineers enter this medical device industry or a related environment upon graduation from our institution. Although these engineers are equipped to address many of the technical challenges that will arise, there is currently limited formal training in or exposure to the regulatory process that is required to bring new devices to market. Knowledge …

Microbiological Examination Of Some Imported Canned And Frozen Foods, Khalid K. Al.Bayatti
Baghdad Science Journal
A number of juices, jams, canned foods and frozen fishes available in local markets were inspected with respect to microbial contamination. We have determined the total viable bacterial cell counts in these samples and the number of g(-) lactose fermentors as a bacterial indicator of food spoilage. The results indicated that most of the food items inspected, were contaminated with large numbers of different species of g(-) ,g(+), yeast and fungi and some were contained more than the maximum permissible number of pathogenic g(-) enteric E-coli, which render these food items unsafe for human consumption.

Having a child with moderate to severe disabilities is a life-altering experience for many families. This study is an exploration of the relationship that exists between the parents of children with moderate to severe disabilities and special education professionals. It is an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the parental perspective on the complexities of that relationship, and to investigate how that relationship is negotiated through stories told by eight parents about their experiences with the professionals in the schools their children attend. This study is also focused on how parents, school systems, and societal understandings of disability and …

Public Use In A Post-Kelo World, Richard A. Epstein
Public Use In A Post-Kelo World, Richard A. Epstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The aftermath of Kelo gives rise to urgent land use issues, both theoretical and historical. On the former, I argue that the analysts should be aware of the close and positive connection between restrictive land use policies on the one hand and a willingness to condemn parcels for private development on the other. The inability to overcome local opposition with private development forces developers to get in essence, pre-acquisition approval through public condemnation. One way, therefore, to ease the pressure on public use is to retreat from aggressive land use regulation to a scheme that more closely approximates that of …

Foods Scraps Composting And Vector Control, Bradley F. Blackwell, Thomas W. Seamans
Foods Scraps Composting And Vector Control, Bradley F. Blackwell, Thomas W. Seamans
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Nontraditional waste management facilities, particularly new projects to compost food scraps, are becoming more common because of national and state initiatives to promote recycling and extend landfill capacities. In fact, food waste is the third largest component of generated waste by weight, following yard trimmings and corrugated boxes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that each American disposes of 1.3 pounds of food waste daily or nearly 474 pounds annually. While there is a clear need to recycle food waste, the location of waste management facilities and national initiatives on waste management are increasingly controversial, partly because of potential …

Understanding Neurosurgery Through Experimental And Computer Models, Ciro Randazzo Md, Aditya S. Pandey Md, Erol Veznedaroglu Md
JHN Journal
Endovascular neurosurgery is an evolving field, with the goal of treating neurological disease with minimal invasion of the body. The current approach is to deliver focused therapies via catheters traveling through the vascular tree. Refinement and advancement of these techniques requires not just new ideas, but new ideas that hold up when tested through the scientific method.
Before clinical trials can begin, ethics and law demand that the ideas are tested first under experimental models. One benefit of these pre-clinical tests is the early identification of side effects. Another is the opportunity to practice and polish surgical technique in advance …

Supplement Allows Ranchers To Eliminate Hay Feeding And Reduce Winter Feed Coats, Richard M. Garrard, J. Benton Glaze Jr
Supplement Allows Ranchers To Eliminate Hay Feeding And Reduce Winter Feed Coats, Richard M. Garrard, J. Benton Glaze Jr
Journal of Extension
Winter feeding of beef cows represents the highest single annual cost to producers across the United States, and more specifically in south central Idaho. Typically, producers utilize hay as the sole source of nutrients for their cows during the winter feeding period. In an attempt to decrease feed costs and maintain animal performance, the utilization of a winter feed supplement consisting of a protein source, ground corn and salt was implemented. Results indicate that the use of the supplement was more economically feasible than feeding hay to cows during the winter feeding period.
