Infralimbic Prefrontal Cortex Is Responsible For Inhibiting Cocaine Seeking In Extinguished Rats, Jamie Peters, Ryan T. Lalumiere, Peter W. Kalivas Jun 2008

Infralimbic Prefrontal Cortex Is Responsible For Inhibiting Cocaine Seeking In Extinguished Rats, Jamie Peters, Ryan T. Lalumiere, Peter W. Kalivas

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

The rat prelimbic prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens core are critical for initiating cocaine seeking. In contrast, the neural circuitry responsible for inhibiting cocaine seeking during extinction is unknown. The present findings using inhibition of selected brain nuclei with GABA agonists show that the suppression of cocaine seeking produced by previous extinction training required activity in the rat infralimbic cortex. Conversely, the reinstatement of drug seeking by a cocaine injection in extinguished animals was suppressed by increasing neuronal activity in infralimbic cortex with the glutamate agonist AMPA. The cocaine seeking induced by inactivating infralimbic cortex resembled other forms of reinstated …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Artificial tracers are frequently employed to characterize solute residence times in stream systems and infer the nature of water retention. When the duration of tracer application is different between experiments, tracer breakthrough curves at downstream locations are difficult to compare directly. We explore methods for deriving stream solute residence time distributions (RTD) from tracer test data, allowing direct, non-parametric comparison of results from experiments of different durations. Paired short- and long-duration field experiments were performed using instantaneous and constant-rate tracer releases, respectively. The experiments were conducted in two study reaches that were morphologically distinct in channel structure and substrate size. …

The Intermediate Filament Network In Cultured Human Keratinocytes Is Remarkably Extensible And Resilient, Douglas S. Fudge, David Russell, Daniel R. Beriault, Whitney Moore, E. Birgitte Lane, A. Wayne Vogl

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The prevailing model of the mechanical function of intermediate filaments in cells assumes that these 10 nm diameter filaments make up networks that behave as entropic gels, with individual intermediate filaments never experiencing direct loading in tension. However, recent work has shown that single intermediate filaments and bundles are remarkably extensible and elastic in vitro, and therefore well-suited to bearing tensional loads. Here we tested the hypothesis that the intermediate filament network in keratinocytes is extensible and elastic as predicted by the available in vitro data. To do this, we monitored the morphology of fluorescently-tagged intermediate filament networks in cultured …

Introduced Mammalian Predators Induce Behavioural Changes In Parental Care In An Endemic New Zealand Bird, Melanie Massaro, Amanda Starling-Windhof, James V. Briskie, Thomas E. Martin Jun 2008

Introduced Mammalian Predators Induce Behavioural Changes In Parental Care In An Endemic New Zealand Bird, Melanie Massaro, Amanda Starling-Windhof, James V. Briskie, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

The introduction of predatory mammals to oceanic islands has led to the extinction of many endemic birds. Although introduced predators should favour changes that reduce predation risk in surviving bird species, the ability of island birds to respond to such novel changes remains unstudied. We tested whether novel predation risk imposed by introduced mammalian predators has altered the parental behaviour of the endemic New Zealand bellbird (Anthornis melanura). We examined parental behaviour of bellbirds at three woodland sites in New Zealand that differed in predation risk: 1) a mainland site with exotic predators present (high predation risk), 2) a mainland …

Heart Rate Variability Characteristics In Sedentary Postmenopausal Women Following Six Months Of Exercise Training: The Drew Study, Conrad P. Earnest, Carl J. Lavie, Steven N. Blair, Timothy S. Church Jun 2008

Heart Rate Variability Characteristics In Sedentary Postmenopausal Women Following Six Months Of Exercise Training: The Drew Study, Conrad P. Earnest, Carl J. Lavie, Steven N. Blair, Timothy S. Church

Faculty Publications

Background: Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with a higher risk of mortality. Overall, postmenopausal women have lower levels of HRV than premenopausal women, which may be additionally complicated by lifestyle related behaviors such as physical inactivity and obesity. Though cardiorespiratory exercise training increases HRV, little is known regarding the exercise dose necessary to promote improvement.

Methodology/Principle Findings: Our primary aim was to measure HRV in post-menopausal women following 6-moths of exercise training. We examined supine resting HRV in 373 post-menopausal women (45-75 y) after 6-months of randomly assigned and double-blinded administered exercise training exercise training at 50%, 100% …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Virulence Genes In Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli And Shigella Flexneri By Members Of The Arac/Xyls Family, Maria Carolina Pilonieta Jun 2008

Transcriptional Regulation Of Virulence Genes In Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli And Shigella Flexneri By Members Of The Arac/Xyls Family, Maria Carolina Pilonieta

Open Access Dissertations

Pathogenesis of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shigella flexneri relies predominantly on members of the AraC/XylS family of transcriptional regulators, Rns (or its homolog, CfaD) and MxiE, respectively. Rns/CfaD regulate the expression of pili, which allow the bacteria to attach to the intestinal epithelium. Better understanding of the role Rns plays in virulence was attained by expanding our knowledge of the Rns regulon, revealing that it functions as an activator of cexE, a previously uncharacterized gene. By in vitro DNase I footprinting two Rns-binding sites were identified upstream of cexEp, both of which are required for full activation of cexE. …

Impact Of Biofuels On Forestland In Central America, Ayako Ebata Jun 2008

Impact Of Biofuels On Forestland In Central America, Ayako Ebata

Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"

Although biofuels are thought to be one of the solutions for reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the net effects might be ambiguous when indirect land use effects are incorporated. Along with the increasing price of biofuel crops, forest lands might be destroyed throughout the world. In this study, the net effect of the increases in U.S. production of corn due to ethanol demand is explored in terms of additional land impacts and deforestation in Central America. I present data from FAO and Searchinger et al, where it is suggested that the Central American region has been in the process …

Time-Frequency Analysis Of Terahertz Radar Signals For Rapit Heart And Breath Rate Detection, Melody L. Massar Jun 2008

Time-Frequency Analysis Of Terahertz Radar Signals For Rapit Heart And Breath Rate Detection, Melody L. Massar

Theses and Dissertations

We develop new time-frequency analytic techniques which facilitate the rapid detection of a person's heart and breath rates from the Doppler shift the movement of their body induces in a terahertz radar signal. In particular, the Doppler shift in the continuous radar return is proportional to the velocity of the person's body. Thus, a time-frequency analysis of the radar return will yield a velocity signal. This signal, in turn, may undergo a second time-frequency analysis to yield any periodic components of the velocity signal, which are often related to the heart and breath rates of the individual. One straightforward means …

The Beginning Of The End For Chimpanzee Experiments?, Andrew Knight Jun 2008

The Beginning Of The End For Chimpanzee Experiments?, Andrew Knight

Experimentation Collection

The advanced sensory, psychological and social abilities of chimpanzees confer upon them a profound ability to suffer when born into unnatural captive environments, or captured from the wild – as many older research chimpanzees once were – and when subsequently subjected to confinement, social disruption, and involuntary participation in potentially harmful biomedical research. Justifications for such research depend primarily on the important contributions advocates claim it has made toward medical advancements. However, a recent large-scale systematic review indicates that invasive chimpanzee experiments rarely provide benefits in excess of their profound animal welfare, bioethical and financial costs. The approval of large …

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf sperm whales (Kogia sima) strand frequently in the southeastern United States (SEUS). To detect seasonal trends in Kogia sp. strandings across the SEUS, all 979 stranding events from 1977 through 2005 were segregated by month. A peak in strandings occurred in the late summer and early fall (July – October). The entire SEUS was divided into segments of similar coastline orientation, 1) North and South Carolina, 2) Georgia and the east coast of Florida, 3) Florida Keys, 4) west coast of Florida, 5) Florida panhandle, Alabama and Mississippi, 6) …
