Working Trees For Community Jun 2008

Working Trees For Community

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Working Trees for Communities is the adaptation of agroforestry technologies to assist communities of all sizes achieve environmental, social, and economic goals, especially at the rural/urban interface.

Today, communities are challenged with accommodating new growth while maintaining the integrity of existing neighborhoods. Accommodating health, safety, transportation, quality of life, economics, environmental quality, and infrastructure development can often lead to land use conflicts. Compromises are often needed to achieve a workable plan.

Today, community residents, businesses, rural landowners, and local leaders must look beyond their own backyards. What is done by one resident or business can affect the community and the …

Working Trees: Silvopasture, An Agroforestry Practice Jun 2008

Working Trees: Silvopasture, An Agroforestry Practice

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Silvopasture integrates trees, livestock, and forage into a single system on one site.

These components diversify income sources. Annual income from grazing and long-term profits from trees respond to different market pressures and reduce risk when combined in the same operation.

Shade from the trees lengthens the forage growing season and improves forage quality. It also increases the comfort level for livestock which reduces stress.

The structure and plant diversity of silvopastures is attractive to many wildlife species including wild turkey, quail, deer, and many songbirds.

Silvopastures are inherently sustainable systems. They increase biological diversity, protect water quality, reduce soil …

The Mexican American Sobador, Convergent Disease Discourse, And Pain Validation In South Texas, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jun 2008

The Mexican American Sobador, Convergent Disease Discourse, And Pain Validation In South Texas, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines how Mexican American sobadores (folk manual therapists) provide needed health services to South Texas residents. Operating in a region with high levels of workplace injuries, chronic disease, and low levels of insuredness, sobadores offer a kind of attention that is appealing in terms of cost, accessibility, and cultural familiarity. The latter is particularly evident with respect to two factors: convergent ethnophysiological discourse and pain validation. Injured people can approach the sobador with minimal trepidation, in part, because sobadores and clients have shared ways of talking about the body and disease. Clients can also expect that sobadores will …

Background. The isolation of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and the development of spectral variants over the past decade have begun to reveal the dynamic nature of protein trafficking and organelle motility. In planta analyses of this dynamic process have typically been limited to only two organelles or proteins at a time in only a few cell types. Results. We generated a transgenic Arabidopsis plant that contains four spectrally different fluorescent proteins. Nuclei, plastids, mitochondria and plasma membranes were genetically tagged with cyan, red, yellow and green fluorescent proteins, respectively. In addition, methods to track nuclei, mitochondria and chloroplasts and quantify …

Location Awareness In Cognitive Radio Networks, Hasari Celebi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive radio is a recent novel approach for the realization of intelligent and sophisticated wireless systems. Although the research and development on cognitive radio is still in the stage of infancy, there are significant interests and efforts towards realization of cognitive radio. Cognitive radio systems are envisioned to support context awareness and related systems. The context can be spectrum, environment, location, waveform, power and other radio resources. Significant amount of the studies related to cognitive radio in the literature focuses on the spectrum awareness since it is one of the most crucial features of cognitive radio systems. However, the rest …

Assessment Of Risk Associated With The Minnesota Proposed Plan For Split-State Status For Mycobacterium Bovis (Bovine Tuberculosis) Jun 2008

Assessment Of Risk Associated With The Minnesota Proposed Plan For Split-State Status For Mycobacterium Bovis (Bovine Tuberculosis)

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

In July 2005, a Minnesota beef herd tested positive for Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) and was officially declared infected with bovine tuberculosis (TB). This was the first infected herd identified since Minnesota’s Accredited Free (AF) status was obtained in 1976. Subsequent testing identified infection in white-tailed deer and several cattle herds adjacent to this index herd. In February 2008, Minnesota declared its 11th infected cattle herd, resulting in the downgrade of the entire State’s TB status to Modified Accredited (MA).
In an effort to minimize the impact of MA status to the State and producers, Minnesota initiated the …

The Effects Of Maturation And Experience On The Predatory Efficiency Of The Whitespotted Bambooshark, Chiloscyllium Plagiosum, Jennifer Louise Ciaccio Jun 2008

The Effects Of Maturation And Experience On The Predatory Efficiency Of The Whitespotted Bambooshark, Chiloscyllium Plagiosum, Jennifer Louise Ciaccio

Open Access Dissertations

Foraging presents a significant challenge for neonatal predators. Both physical maturation and predatory experience may improve predatory abilities. To tease apart which improvements in predatory abilities were due to increased maturation and which to increased experience, several experiments that isolated the effects of maturation and experience were conducted. Individual whitespotted bamboosharks, Chiloscyllium plagiosum, improved predatory efficiency with both maturation and experience. Physical maturation, when isolated from experience, improved predatory efficiency of naïve sharks foraging on shrimp, an elusive prey, but not of sharks foraging on worms, a non-elusive prey. Predatory experience, when isolated from maturation, improved predatory efficiency of sharks …

Victor Herbert: A Theatrical Life, Neil Gould Jun 2008

Victor Herbert: A Theatrical Life, Neil Gould

Biography

Victor Herbert is one of the giants of American culture. As a musician, conductor, and, above all, composer, he touched every corner of American musical life at the turn of the century, writing scores of songs, marches, concerti, and other works. But his most enduring legacy is on a different kind of stage, as one of the grandfathers of the modern musical theater.

Now, Victor Herbert has the biography he deserves. Neil Gould draws on his own experience as a director, producer, and scholar to craft the first comprehensive portrait in fifty years of the Irish immigrant whose extraordinary talents …

Beta3 Integrin Haplotype Influences Gene Regulation And Plasma Von Willebrand Factor Activity, Katie E. Payne, Paul F. Bray, Peter J. Grant, Angela M. Carter

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

The Leu33Pro polymorphism of the gene encoding beta(3) integrin (ITGB3) is associated with acute coronary syndromes and influences platelet aggregation. Three common promoter polymorphisms have also been identified. The aims of this study were to (1) investigate the influence of the ITGB3 -400C/A, -425A/C and -468G/A promoter polymorphisms on reporter gene expression and nuclear protein binding and (2) determine genotype and haplotype associations with platelet alpha(IIb)beta(3) receptor density. Promoter haplotypes were introduced into an ITGB3 promoter-pGL3 construct by site directed mutagenesis and luciferase reporter gene expression analysed in HEL and HMEC-1 cells. Binding of nuclear proteins was assessed by electrophoretic …

Vision-Assisted Control Of A Hovering Air Vehicle In An Indoor Setting, Neil G. Johnson Jun 2008

Vision-Assisted Control Of A Hovering Air Vehicle In An Indoor Setting, Neil G. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The quadrotor helicopter is a unique flying vehicle which uses the thrust from four motors to provide hover flight capability. The uncoupled nature of the longitudinal and lateral axes and its ability to support large payloads with respect to its size make it an attractive vehicle for autonomous vehicle research. In this thesis, the quadrotor is modeled based on first principles and a proportional-derivative control method is applied for attitude stabilization and position control. A unique means of using an optic flow sensor for velocity and position estimation in an indoor setting is presented with flight results. Reliable hover flight …

Preliminary Experience Of Using A Learning And Knowledge Management System For An Se-1 Course, J. Scott Hawker, Ian Webber, Michael Starenko, Jeremiah Parry-Hill

Presentations and other scholarship

Students and instructors struggle to provide an integrated view of learning content that is spread over personal and shared file systems, course management systems, team project repositories, wikis, blogs, and other content storage and retrieval systems. Further, they struggle to organize this content when each system provides a different organizational mechanism and strategy. Course management systems fragment content by semester, course, and class session. File systems fragment content into hierarchically organized folders and files with only folder and file names to describe the content. Project repositories fragment information into versions, artifact types, and subsystems organized as folders. It is especially …

Parent Education Seminar: Children's Emotional Development, Barbara E. Kase Jun 2008

Parent Education Seminar: Children's Emotional Development, Barbara E. Kase

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this project was to examine how attachment theory and emotional reactivity intersect in emotional regulation and to develop an educational seminar that increases parent/caregiver's awareness of behaviors that shape a child's emotional development. Attachment is an emotional connection between the parent/caregiver and child that alleviates the child's wariness and stress. Parent/caregiver and infant interactions form attachment patterns that: (a) describe the parent's response to the child's emotional reactivity, (b) result in relational styles, and (c) affect the quality of the emotional connection between them. The quality of the attachment affects the child's emotional development and influences the …

What We Do When We’Re Not Blogging (For China Beat)… Jun 2008

What We Do When We’Re Not Blogging (For China Beat)…

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

There’s a virtual version of the game tag, in which bloggers who get a cyber-tap on the shoulder have to reveal five things people don’t know about them on their blog, and then can call on five people to do the same. We enjoy it when bloggers we enjoy reading, such as Rebecca MacKinnon, get tagged and we get to learn things like, in her case, which Disney cartoon she was “obsessed” with as a child. Despite the title of this post, though, you won’t get those sorts of personal revelations here. So, I’m afraid you’ll end up frustrated if …

An Automatic Alogorithm For Detecting Stent Endothelialization From Volumetric Optical Coherence Tomography Datasets, Garret T. Bonnema, Kristen O'Halloran Cardinal, Stuart K. Williams, Jennifer K. Barton Jun 2008

An Automatic Alogorithm For Detecting Stent Endothelialization From Volumetric Optical Coherence Tomography Datasets, Garret T. Bonnema, Kristen O'Halloran Cardinal, Stuart K. Williams, Jennifer K. Barton

Biomedical Engineering

Recent research has suggested that endothelialization of vascular stents is crucial to reducing the risk of late stent thrombosis. With a resolution of approximately 10 μm, optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be an appropriate imaging modality for visualizing the vascular response to a stent and measuring the percentage of struts covered with an anti-thrombogenic cellular lining. We developed an image analysis program to locate covered and uncovered stent struts in OCT images of tissue-engineered blood vessels. The struts were found by exploiting the highly reflective and shadowing characteristics of the metallic stent material. Coverage was evaluated by comparing the luminal …

The Impact Of Web-Based Tutorials In One Corporation's Transition To A Blended Learning Environment, Michelle Anne Boyd

Theses and Dissertations

ELM Resources, a not-for-profit, mutual-benefit corporation, provides web-based transmission and data translation services for student loan data between loan providers and schools/universities. This corporation has a relatively new training staff of five to seven employees and over 1,800 client organizations. Because of the heavy demands placed on the training staff, ELM training administrators sought alternatives to their current training program of onsite training and web conferencing. Blended learning was identified as one possible solution. In this project, blended learning is defined as using a combination of face-to-face training and technology-delivered training. By adding web-based, on-demand tutorials, along with other training …
