A Qualitative Model On Sustainability Of The Riacho Fundo Basin (Brasília, Brazil), P. Salles, B. Bredeweg, Ana Luiza Rios Caldas Jul 2008

A Qualitative Model On Sustainability Of The Riacho Fundo Basin (Brasília, Brazil), P. Salles, B. Bredeweg, Ana Luiza Rios Caldas

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Urbanisation seems to be the future of the global society (Egger, 2006). Understanding the consequences of land use change and the establishment of urban areas is essential for making sustainable this future. This paper describes an implemented qualitative simulation model about the Brazilian Riacho Fundo case study for the Project NaturNet – Redime1. This case study bridges the gap between case studies focussing on sustainability of water bodies in protected areas (River Mesta, Bulgaria, and the Delta of the Danube River, Romania), and case studies that focus on river management and rehabilitation, in areas strongly modified by human influence (River …

Bottom-Up Methodologies For The Modeling And Upscaling Of Farm Nitrogen Losses In European Landscapes, Tommy Dalgaard, C. Kjeldsen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents bottom-up scaling methodologies, implemented in the MEA-Scope strategic research project, and in the NitroEurope landscape level component. Both projects are based on a bottom-up approach, where farm information are collected for landscapes in Germany, Slovakia, Poland, France, Hungary, Italy, Scotland, The Netherlands and Denmark; and landscape level impacts of the Model for European Agriculture (MEA) are assessed. This paper is about the upscaling from farm to landscape level, and focuses on the modelling of Nitrogen surplus from agriculture as an indicator for water pollution. It is demonstrated in detail how farm information from the Danish landscape is …

Interaction Design For Rural Agricultural Sensor Networks, K. Walker, A. Kabashi, J. Abdelnour-Nocera, K. Ngugi, J. Underwood, J. Elmirghani, M. Prodanovic

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We describe the ongoing design of a sensor network for small family farms inrural Kenya. The sensor network is just one part of an ‘ecology of resources’ in whichhandheld devices are used to bridge the sensor network and a computer-based access point. We describe the two villages where the system is deployed and the user requirementscollected. We then describe the architecture of the sensor network and detail how it fits inwith the larger integrated system. We then detail our approach to interface and interactiondesign, and conclude by describing the next steps in the project.

A Library Of Model Fragments On Sustainability, P. Salles, B. Bredeweg, E. Cioaca, E. Nakova, A. Zitek, R. A. A. Noble

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper describes the implementation of a Library of model fragments that integrates different models and captures essential concepts for understanding sustainable development related issues, presented in meaningful ways as simulations (Salles and Bredeweg, 2007). Input models to the Library come from the NaturNet – Redime1 Project case studies and from models about the Millennium Development Goals (Salles, 2005). As the Library includes a broad range of knowledge from different disciplines and a large number os scenarios and model fragments, it is necessary to create handles to explore the Library and to select clusters of concepts that may be used …

Geo-Communication For Risk Assessment And Catastrophe Prevention Of Flood Events In The Coastal Areas Of Chennai, S. Glaser, R. Glaser, A. Drescher, C. Pfeiffer, E. Schliermann-Kraus, M. Lechner, J. Vencatesan

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Risk assessment of environmental stressors in the context of information and communication technologies is an emerging field of scientific research, for example to gain an understanding of how floods will develop. Geo-information technologies are accepted as powerful tools in crisis situations. To be successful in risk assessment and catastrophe prevention, it is essential to follow an interdisciplinary approach combining natural scientific, socio-economic and technical knowledge. At the same time it is important to combine top down (planning, official institutions) with bottom up views of the affected people. Interconnecting computational resources, human interdisciplinary expertise and local knowledge, following a top down …

Use Of Two Nonparametric Methods (Cart And Mars) To Model The Potential Distribution Of Gullies In Spanish Rangelands, A. Gómez Gutiérrez, S. Schnabel, F. J. Lavado Contador

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Gully erosion represents an important soil degradation process in rangelands. Inorder to take preventive or control measures and to reduce its environmental damages andeconomical costs it is useful to localize the points in the landscape where gullying takesplace and to determine the importance of the different factors involved. The study is carriedout in Extremadura, southwest Spain. The main objectives of this work are: 1) to model thespatial distribution of gullies, 2) comparison of two nonparametric schemes to constructpredictive models 3) to analyze the role of prevalence and of scale for susceptibility modelsin geomorphology, 4) evaluating the importance of the different …

Towards Process Oriented Environmental Monitoring Systems For Intelligent Risk Management, Oliver Faust, Bernhard H. C. Sputh, Alastair R. Allen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water monitoring and associated risk management requires a large number of in-situmonitoring stations. These stations measure water quality parameters and relay the measurementsto a data centre. From a data processing point of view, such systems constitute distributed processingnetworks. In present water monitoring systems and in a wide range of other environmentalmonitoring systems the network aspect stops at the node or in-situ monitoring station (IMS) level. This paper extends the networking idea from the system level to the IMS design level. We modelan in-situ monitoring station as a network of communicating sequential processes. For this networkwe establish the fundamental system properties such …

Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutases In Developing Cotton Fibers: Evidence For An Extracellular Form, Hee Jin Kim, Naohiro Kato, Sunran Kim, Barbara Triplett Jul 2008

Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutases In Developing Cotton Fibers: Evidence For An Extracellular Form, Hee Jin Kim, Naohiro Kato, Sunran Kim, Barbara Triplett

Faculty Publications

Hydrogen peroxide and other reactive oxygen species are important signaling molecules in diverse physiological processes. Previously, we discovered superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in extracellular protein preparations from fiber-bearing cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seeds. We show here, based on immunoreactivity, that the enzyme is a Cu/Zn-SOD (CSD). Immunogold localization shows that CSD localizes to secondary cell walls of developing cotton fibers. Five cotton CSD cDNAs were cloned from cotton fiber and classified into three subfamilies (Group 1: GhCSD1; Group 2: GhCSD2a and GhCSD2b; Group 3: GhCSD3 and GhCSD3s). Members of Group 1 and 2 are expressed throughout fiber development, but predominant …

Mistake And Disclosure In A Model Of Two-Sided Informational Inputs, Michael J. Borden Jul 2008

Mistake And Disclosure In A Model Of Two-Sided Informational Inputs, Michael J. Borden

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This paper will examine some theoretical aspects of contractual non-disclosure and the related doctrine of unilateral mistake. These two legal rubrics are conceptually similar; each is concerned with the degree to which parties must communicate their understandings about the nature of the contract into which they are about to enter. If one party fails to reveal enough information, the other party may enter into the agreement under a misunderstanding and consequently may attempt to avoid contractual liability on the basis of mistake or on a theory of nondisclosure. The law of contracts clearly attaches a great deal of importance to …

Feeding Behaviour Of The Columbretes Lizard Podarcis Atrata, In Relation To Isopoda (Crustaceae) Species: Ligia Italica And Armadillo Officinalis, Aurora M. Castilla, Bieke Vanhooydonck, Alessandro Catenazzi

Publications

The lizard Podarcis atrata, endemic to the Columbretes archipelago (Mediterranean, Spain) occupies very small islands characterized by extreme aridity and a reduced availability of potential insect prey. The results of an experimental study have shown that adult lizards offered individuals of Ligia italica and Armadillo officinalis (marine and terrestrial isopods, respectively) consumed at high frequencies; with males consuming them at significantly higher frequencies than females. The results are discussed in light of the importance of the inclusion of marine prey into the diet in arid insular ecosystems.

Five commercial botanical products (Shilianhua [SLH] tablets, Shiu Huo pills, Fenulyn, Bitter Melon, and Glucose Metabolic Support), available in the US market, with reported claims for regulation of metabolism were screened for their effect on body weight gain in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Pilot results suggested that SLH tablets attenuated body weight gain, whereas Shiu Huo pills and Fenulyn tended to promote weight gain in the mice on the high-fat diet. To investigate the bioactive components in the SLH tablet, the wild SLH plant (Sinocrassula indica Berge) was collected from China and used to make a variety of extracts including …

Botanicals As Epigenetic Modulators For Mechanisms Contributing To Development Of Metabolic Syndrome, Heather Kirk, William T. Cefalu, David Ribnicky, Zhijun Liu, Kenneth J. Eilertsen Jul 2008

Botanicals As Epigenetic Modulators For Mechanisms Contributing To Development Of Metabolic Syndrome, Heather Kirk, William T. Cefalu, David Ribnicky, Zhijun Liu, Kenneth J. Eilertsen

Faculty Publications

Epigenetics refers to heritable changes in gene expression that are not attributable to changes in DNA sequence and impacts many areas of applied and basic biology including developmental biology, gene therapy, somatic cell nuclear transfer, somatic cell reprogramming, and stem cell biology. Epigenetic changes are known to contribute to aging in addition to multiple disease states. Epigenetic changes can be influenced by environmental factors that in turn can be inherited by daughter cells during cell division and can also be inherited through the germ line. Thus, it is intriguing to consider that epigenetics, in general, may play a role in …

Research With Decisionally Incapacitated Human Subjects: An Argument For A Systemic Approach To Risk-Benefit Assessment, Carl H. Coleman Jul 2008

Research With Decisionally Incapacitated Human Subjects: An Argument For A Systemic Approach To Risk-Benefit Assessment, Carl H. Coleman

Indiana Law Journal

The amount of medical research with persons who lack decision-making capacity is rapidly increasing, but in most states it takes place without clear legal authority. In addition to creating significant liability risks for researchers and persons who provide consent on behalf of incapacitated subjects, the lack of explicit legal standards means that few, if any, safeguards exist to protect incapacitated persons' rights and welfare. Previous efforts to close the gap between clinical reality and legal requirements have failed in part because they have not provided a coherent or persuasive ethical justification for permitting this research. This Article seeks to fill …

The Growth Of Nonprofit Accounting And It's Impact On Human Services, Roger A. Lohmann Jul 2008

The Growth Of Nonprofit Accounting And It's Impact On Human Services, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Changes in nonprofit accounting standards and practices have spearheaded a quiet revolution in financial management practice in social agencies and the delivery of human services during the past three decades. These changes have gone hand-in-glove with other changes in the political arena to dramatically transform the ways in which human services are organized and delivered. At the core of this transition has been the movement from fund to enterprise accounting, together with such larger political developments as the expansion of grant-based relations with government into the performance management environment of purchase of service contracting.

The Potential For Crop-To-Wild Gene Flow In Sorghum In Ethiopia And Niger: A Geographic Survey, Tesfaye Tesso, Issoufou Kapran, Cecile Grenier, Allison Snow, Patricia Sweeney, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, David B. Marx, Gurling Bothma, Gebisa Ejeta

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Information about the potential for crop–wild hybridization is needed to understand how crop genes, including transgenes, affect the population genetics and ecology of sexually compatible relatives. Transgenic sorghum is under development for use by traditional farmers in Africa, the center of origin for sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], but systematic surveys of the current extent of contact with wild and weedy relatives are lacking. We studied wild and weedy sorghums that are interfertile with the crop and constitute a crop–wild–weed complex. The survey was conducted in 2005 in areas of traditional sorghum cultivation in three regions of Ethiopia and …
