The Mayan Ice Cap: Glacial Geology And Paleoclimate Of The Northern Guatemalan Highlands, Alex Joseph Roy

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Sierra de los Cuchumatanes region of the northern Guatemalan highlands supported a large plateau ice cap with an area of -40 km2 along with a group of 5 cirque glaciers -1 to 2 km2 during the local last glacial maximum (LLGM). A comprehensive mapping reconstruction of the northern Guatemalan highlands is presented here, including glacial geology and an estimate of maximum ice limits from physical evidence and computer modeling. The glacial geologic map was produced via field mapping with global positioning system (GPS) surveying combined with aerial stereo photographic and topographic map analysis. This new field work on moraine …

Sustainability Evaluation: Development And Validation Of An Evaluation Checklist, Daniela C. Schroeter Aug 2008

Sustainability Evaluation: Development And Validation Of An Evaluation Checklist, Daniela C. Schroeter

Dissertations

Sustainability permeates many levels of human activity. Interest in sustainability is grounded primarily in the sustainable development field which is concerned with the survival of humans on planet earth, and with the growing demands of meeting people's long-term needs. In the North American evaluation literature, however, sustainability is primarily thought of in terms of continuing program activity beyond initial funding cycles via diversification of funding streams or institutionalization.

Two distinct perspectives for evaluating sustainability were identified. The first is concerned with micro-level issues related to the continuation of programs, policies, and other types of human action. The second is a …

Palmated Antlers Of Moose May Serve As A Parabolic Reflector Of Sounds, George A. Bubenik, Peter G. Bubenik Aug 2008

Palmated Antlers Of Moose May Serve As A Parabolic Reflector Of Sounds, George A. Bubenik, Peter G. Bubenik

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

It has been postulated that the excellent sense of hearing in moose is mostly due to: (1) the large surface of the external ear, (2) better stereophony due to the large distance between ears, (3) independently movable, extremely adjustable pinna, and (4) the amplification of sounds reflected by the palms of the antlers. The last factor, possible reflection of sounds into pinna by the palm of the antlers, was tested in this study on a large antler trophy of Alaskan moose. The reception of a standard tone, broadcast from the frontally placed speaker, was recorded by a sound level meter …

Lipoid Proteinosis. A Report Of 2 Siblings And A Brief Review Of The Literature, Sahar H. Al-Natour

Saudi Medical Journal

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disorder characterized by deposition of a hyaline-like material in the skin, oral laryngeal mucosa, and in other sites. In this report, the author describes 2 Saudi siblings who had characteristic skin findings, oral and mucosal lesions, histological findings along with few rarely encountered manifestations including pathognomonic calcifications in the hippocampus, electroencephalogram findings and briefly reviews the literature. These cases are presented to emphasize the occurrence of this condition in Saudi Arabia, and to update information on the latest developments of this disorder.

Faiva Fakaouli: The Tongan Performance Art Of Humor, 'Okusitino Māhina Aug 2008

Faiva Fakaouli: The Tongan Performance Art Of Humor, 'Okusitino Māhina

Pacific Studies

This essay will critically examine faiva fakaoli, literally translated as "the art of funny things, in a number of separate but connected unique and universal contexts. I wish to make clear right from the outset that this essay is not an exercise in theoretically and practically reviewing the existing literature on humor, nor an attempt to make a comprehensive examination of what humor is, i.e., its form and content, nor, for that matter, what humor does, i.e., its social function.' While the theoretical and practical, ontological; and epistemological, or qualitative and utilitarian questions are extremely important, my …

Cultures De Rente Et Degradation De L'Environnent En Afrique Sub-Saharienne : Le Cas Du Kenya Et De La Republique Centrafricaine (Rca), Ruth Wanjiru Aug 2008

Cultures De Rente Et Degradation De L'Environnent En Afrique Sub-Saharienne : Le Cas Du Kenya Et De La Republique Centrafricaine (Rca), Ruth Wanjiru

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This work examines the link between environmental degradation and cash crops in sub-Saharan Africa by comparing colonial and post-colonial agricultural practice in Kenya, and the Central African Republic (CAR). It argues that there is a historical link between the agricultural policies instituted by the colonial powers and the subsequent environmental damage. Due to the fact that their agricultural choices centered on the production of tea and coffee, the British tended to engage in land management policies that eventually led to substantial environmental degradation in Kenya. The French, on the other hand, engaged less intensively and less extensively in adverse agricultural …

A Comparison Of Maintenance-Training Methods For Children Diagnosed With Autism, Nicholas L. Weatherly Aug 2008

A Comparison Of Maintenance-Training Methods For Children Diagnosed With Autism, Nicholas L. Weatherly

Dissertations

The current study evaluated the effects of two different maintenance-training methods and one control condition on skill maintenance within a public-school classroom for children diagnosed with autism. The two training methods involved the use of either a continuous-reinforcement schedule or a thinned partial-reinforcement schedule during 20 overlearning training sessions following skill acquisition. The control condition did not involve any overlearning following skill acquisition. Three children were each taught two curricular programs, with each program involving the two training methods and the control condition using a multielement design. Overlearning using a thinned partial-reinforcement schedule reliably produced greater maintenance across all participants, …

Cellular And Synaptic Actions Of Acetylcholine In The Lamprey Spinal Cord, Katharina A. Quinlan, James T. Buchanan Aug 2008

Cellular And Synaptic Actions Of Acetylcholine In The Lamprey Spinal Cord, Katharina A. Quinlan, James T. Buchanan

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigated cellular and synaptic mechanisms of cholinergic neuromodulation in the in vitro lamprey spinal cord. Most spinal neurons tested responded to local application of acetylcholine (ACh) with depolarization and decreased input resistance. The depolarization persisted in the presence of either tetrodotoxin or muscarinic antagonist scopolamine and was abolished with nicotinic antagonist mecamylamine, indicating a direct depolarization through nicotinic ACh receptors. Local application of muscarinic ACh agonists modulated synaptic strength in the spinal cord by decreasing the amplitude of unitary excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. The postsynaptic response to direct application of glutamate was unchanged by muscarinic agonists, suggesting …

Classroom Behaviour: A Developmental Management Approach, R Lewis Aug 2008

Classroom Behaviour: A Developmental Management Approach, R Lewis

Teacher journal archive (2004-2011)

Developmental management aims not only to establish order but also to teach values. In a democratic culture, the idea that students should respect the rights of others is an essential learning outcome. This article discusses managing inappropriate behaviour, after focusing briefly on how to stimulate appropriate behaviour, so that misbehaviour is minimised. These techniques include avoiding disruption, keeping the lesson flowing, keeping students interested, keeping students accountable for learning, and making students feel monitored. The author then considers management strategies for the four categories of student behaviour, with the aim of developmental management being to move students efficiently from the …

Computational Analysis Of Expressed Sequence Tags For Understanding Gene Regulation., I. Elizabeth Cha 1973- Aug 2008

Computational Analysis Of Expressed Sequence Tags For Understanding Gene Regulation., I. Elizabeth Cha 1973-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High-throughput sequencing has provided a myriad of genetic data for thousands of organisms. Computational analysis of one data type, expressed sequence tags (ESTs) yields insight into gene expression, alternative splicing, tissue specificity gene functionality and the detection and differentiation of pseudogenes. Two computational methods have been developed to analyze alternative splicing events and to detect and characterize pseudogenes using ESTs. A case study of rat phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) genes yielded more than twenty-five previously unreported isoforms. These were experimentally verified through wet lab collaboration and found to be tissue specific. In addition, thirteen cytochrome-like gene and pseudogene sequences from the …

The purpose of this study was to compare the dye leakage of an MTA apical barrier after immediate placement, 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours, and 1 week of setting time. One hundred twenty single-rooted extracted teeth were accessed and the apical three millimeters resected. The teeth were instrumented with 0.06 tapered Brasseler EndoSequence series rotary instruments to the apex. The same instrument was then placed in the apical opening and advanced to D16, resulting in an apical opening of 1.36mm. The teeth were randomly assigned to the five test groups, and ten teeth each were placed in positive and …

Organic Methods To Control Root Rot Of Peas And Spinach In North-Central West Virginia, Hannah Witten Schrum Aug 2008

Organic Methods To Control Root Rot Of Peas And Spinach In North-Central West Virginia, Hannah Witten Schrum

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Root rot disease is a limiting factor in organic production of cool season crops for many growers in North central West Virginia. In attempt to control root rot and its devastating impact on crop stands we decided to study a number of environmental, cultural, and biological control methods. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of alterations of the seed environment on disease incidence (measured by crop emergence and survival 21 days after planting) and thereby define techniques which are suitable for small growers to adopt if they have root rot problems. We therefore explored four broadly …

Microwave Dielectroscopy Of Breast Tissue Phantoms In The 5.8-40 Ghz Range, Binh Tran Aug 2008

Microwave Dielectroscopy Of Breast Tissue Phantoms In The 5.8-40 Ghz Range, Binh Tran

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Based on the high contrast in dielectric properties between the low-water-contain sample and the high-water-content one, we can determine whether the tissue sample is cancerous or normal. In order to make the measurement repeatable and convenient, some phantom materials, which have the same dielectric properties of human tissues, have been prepared. These phantom tissues are made from gelatin, water with honey syrup and Sodium Chloride (NaCl). In this project, we are going to measure and compare the dielectric properties of different types of phantom tissues by using focused beam antennas. The purpose of this project is to perform a systematic …

The Disintegration Of Intellectual Property, Richard A. Epstein Aug 2008

The Disintegration Of Intellectual Property, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This Article plays off the title of Thomas Grey's well-known article, The Disintegration of Property, which argued in part that the ceaseless consensual fragmentation and recombination of property rights revealed some inner incoherence of the underlying private property institutions. I take the opposite position and treat this supposed disintegration of private property as evidence of its robust nature, not only for land but for all forms of intellectual property. Low transaction costs facilitate the creation of efficient regimes of property rights. I use this framework to critique modern intellectual property rights cases that limit the use of injunctive relief in …

Outstanding In Their Field: The Phenotype Of The 21st Century Plant Breeder, P. Stephen Baenziger, Robert A. Graybosch, Ismail M. Dweikat, Stephen N. Wegulo, Gary L. Hein, Kent M. Eskridge

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Plant breeding is a highly interdisciplinary science that requires the skills and teamwork of many scientists to be successful. In the 21st century, plant breeding will reap the benefits of the rapid advances in genomics research and understanding, as well as, advances in information and mechanical technology. The skill and success of plant breeders will be determined by their ability to use their resources efficiently, retaining those proven methodologies and augmenting them with novel approaches to meet their breeding objectives. Once the objective is determined, the plant breeder must: 1. identify and incorporate the needed genetic variability, 2. inbreed and …

Kin Recognition In The Social Spiders Anelosimus Sp. In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Mary Kathryn Busby Aug 2008

Kin Recognition In The Social Spiders Anelosimus Sp. In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Mary Kathryn Busby

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Anelosimus spiders are social and use pheromonal and vibrational cues to distinguish conspecifics from predators and prey. Juveniles live in their natal web with adults until maturity, at which time they disperse. Given that juveniles are more likely to disperse to locations near to their natal web and that Anelosimus has developed mechanisms for kin recognition, these spiders would be expected to exhibit aggressive behavior less frequently in the presence of intruding spiders from nearby webs than towards intruders from distant webs. This hypothesis was tested by introducing spiders to new webs from distant locations as well as from nearby …

Species Richness Of Vascular Plants In The Riparian Transition Zones Of The Quebrada La Cruz And The Quebrada Socorro In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Rhiannon Cook

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

While many studies have been performed to determine the effects of urbanization in the later stages of development on biodiversity, little is known about how biodiversity is affected by urbanizations in its early phases. This research evaluates how the biodiversity of herbaceous plants in the riparian ecotones of two rivers is affected in the transition from a rural to town setting. Morpho species diversity was sampled on two rivers of the Monteverde, Costa Rica area; the Quebrada Socorro, relatively unaffected by human influence, and the Quebrada La Cruz, which is greatly influenced by both the growth of town infrastructure and …

Effects Of Alternative -Food Sources On Operant Behavior, Raquel Moreira Alo Aug 2008

Effects Of Alternative -Food Sources On Operant Behavior, Raquel Moreira Alo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To investigate how operant and alternative food arranged by different schedules interact to determine response rates and patterns when the sources of food are the same or different, six experiments were delineated. The effects of the number of food sources were investigated in Experiments 1-4. In Experiments 1 and 2, a variable-interval (VI) schedule was used to program the operant food, while the fixed-time (FT - Experiment 1) or the variable-time (VT - Experiment 2) alternative food was delivered from the same or a different source than that of the operant food. Experiments 3 and 4 were identical to Experiments …
