From Multi-User Virtual Environment To 3d Virtual Learning Environment, Daniel Livingstone, Jeremy Kemp, Edmund Edgar

Academic Technology

While digital virtual worlds have been used in education for a number of years, advances in the capabilities and spread of technology have fed a recent boom in interest in massively multi-user 3D virtual worlds for entertainment, and this in turn has led to a surge of interest in their educational applications. In this paper we briefly review the use of virtual worlds for education, from informal learning to formal instruction, and consider what is required to turn a virtual world from a Multi-User Virtual Environment into a fully fledged 3D Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). In this we focus on …

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: I. Synchronization By Artificial Tides, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Christopher C. Chabot, Stephen J. Skinner Aug 2008

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: I. Synchronization By Artificial Tides, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Christopher C. Chabot, Stephen J. Skinner

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Limulus polyphemus, the American horseshoe crab, has an endogenous clock that drives circatidal rhythms of locomotor activity. In this study, we examined the ability of artificial tides to entrain the locomotor rhythms of Limulus in the laboratory. In experiments one and two, the activity of 16 individuals of L. polyphemus was monitored with activity boxes and “running wheels.” When the crabs were exposed to artificial tides created by changes in water depth, circatidal rhythms were observed in animals exposed to 12.4-h “tidal” cycles of either water depth changes (8 of 8 animals) or inundation (7 of 8 animals). In experiment …

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: Ii. Relationship To Circadian Rhythms Of Visual Sensitivity, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Lisa Bedford, Christopher C. Chabot Aug 2008

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: Ii. Relationship To Circadian Rhythms Of Visual Sensitivity, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Lisa Bedford, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

In the laboratory, horseshoe crabs express a circadian rhythm of visual sensitivity as well as daily and circatidal rhythms of locomotion. The major goal of this investigation was to determine whether the circadian clock underlying changes in visual sensitivity also modulates locomotion. To address this question, we developed a method for simultaneously recording changes in visual sensitivity and locomotion. Although every animal (24) expressed consistent circadian rhythms of visual sensitivity, rhythms of locomotion were more variable: 44% expressed a tidal rhythm, 28% were most active at night, and the rest lacked statistically significant rhythms. When exposed to artificial tides, 8 …

Review Of The Genus Polycheria Haswell, A Symbiotic Group Of Amphipods (Crustacea: Dexaminidae) With Descriptions Of New Species From Florida, The Caribbean Sea, And The Indo-Pacific Region, John Milton Foster Aug 2008

Review Of The Genus Polycheria Haswell, A Symbiotic Group Of Amphipods (Crustacea: Dexaminidae) With Descriptions Of New Species From Florida, The Caribbean Sea, And The Indo-Pacific Region, John Milton Foster

Dissertations

Systematics and taxonomy of the dexaminid amphipod genus Polycheria Haswell (Dexamindae: Amphipoda), whose members are cosmopolitan associates of tunicates and sponges, are confused. This is due in large part to the many inadequate and incomplete descriptions and poorly some executed illustrations, especially for the early studies on the group. Previously, 22 nominal species or forms have been described or designated in the literature. The purpose of this study is to critically review and clarify the systematics of this enigmatic genus. Based on personal collections and on specimens from museums, five new species are designated and 22 species or forms are …

The Emotional Intelligence And Resilience Of School Leaders: An Investigation Into Leadership Behaviors, Aileen Thompson Bumphus Aug 2008

The Emotional Intelligence And Resilience Of School Leaders: An Investigation Into Leadership Behaviors, Aileen Thompson Bumphus

Dissertations

Recent research suggests that leadership in schools and emotional intelligence are related. Furthermore, resiliency has been researched and found to be linked to successful leadership. As a result of these findings and the researcher's own professional experiences, it is speculated that emotional intelligence, resilience, and school leadership may be highly related factors in how one leads a school. The study of this three-factor relationship has been virtually overlooked in the research on school leadership and might prove useful in the recruitment, identification, development, and retention of effective school leaders.

A study of the emotional intelligence, resilience, and leadership of public …

An Arena For Success: Exploring Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Sandra L. Kakacek, Allen J. Ottens Aug 2008

An Arena For Success: Exploring Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Sandra L. Kakacek, Allen J. Ottens

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a relatively new experientially-based therapy that has been applied to individuals, couples, families, and groups. There is a small but growing literature base that speaks to EAP’s potential for working with very challenging clients. Adjudicated juveniles diagnosed with Oppositional Defi ant Disorder (ODD) are one such group. This paper contains a brief presentation of a case study that illustrates how EAP can be implemented, a description of the evolution of EAP, the components of EAP, and a discussion of the hypothesized mechanisms that account for its effectiveness.

Genetically Engineering Human-Animal Chimeras And Lives Worth Living, Dennis R. Cooley Aug 2008

Genetically Engineering Human-Animal Chimeras And Lives Worth Living, Dennis R. Cooley

Between the Species

Genetic engineering often generates fear of out of control scientists creating Frankenstein creatures that will terrorize the general populace, especially in the cases of human-animal chimeras. While sometimes an accurate characterization of some researchers, this belief is often the result of repugnance for new technology rather than being rationally justified. To facilitate thoughtful discussion the moral issues raised by human-animal chimeras, ethicists and other stakeholders must develop a rational ethical framework before raw emotion has a chance of becoming the dominating justification for public opinion and policy. Derek Parfit’s work on lives worth living for human beings can provide valuable …

Animal Thoughts On Factory Farms: Michael Leahy, Language And Awareness Of Death, Rebekah Humphreys Aug 2008

Animal Thoughts On Factory Farms: Michael Leahy, Language And Awareness Of Death, Rebekah Humphreys

Between the Species

The idea that language is necessary for thought and emotion is a dominant one in philosophy. Animals have taken the brunt of this idea, since it is widely held that language is exclusively human. Michael Leahy (1991) makes a case against the moral standing of factory-farmed animals based on such ideas. His approach is Wittgensteinian: understanding is a thought process that requires language, which animals do not possess. But he goes further than this and argues that certain factory farming methods do not cause certain sufferings to the animals used, since animals lack full awareness of their circumstances. In particular …

The Intentionality Of Plover Cognitive States, Chuck Stieg Aug 2008

The Intentionality Of Plover Cognitive States, Chuck Stieg

Between the Species

This paper attempts to clarify and justify the attribution of mental states to animals by focusing on two different conceptions of intentionality: instrumentalist and realist. I use each of these general views to interpret and discuss the behavior and cognitive states of piping plovers in order to provide a substantive way to frame the question of animal minds. I argue that attributing mental states to plovers is warranted for instrumentalists insofar as it is warranted for similar human behavior. For realists about intentionality, the complexity, adaptability and flexibility of the plovers’ behavior, along with its ability to utilize the content …

The Social Contract, The Conservative Attitude, And Antibiotics Development, Eli Weber Aug 2008

The Social Contract, The Conservative Attitude, And Antibiotics Development, Eli Weber

Between the Species

The prevalence of antibiotic resistant microbes has led to a call for new antibiotics development. Due to the irresponsible practices of the medical community in prescribing antibiotics, much of the demand for new antibiotics is suspect. I argue that the social contract, which properly includes human relationships with laboratory animals, requires a conservative attitude toward new antibiotics development. This attitude places limits on the justificatory role of demand in determining whether a particular research project meets the conditions for morally justified research, as defined by Rollin’s utilitarian principle.

Trypanosoma Cruzi In Wild Raccoons And Opossums From Kentucky, Brian Chad Groce Aug 2008

Trypanosoma Cruzi In Wild Raccoons And Opossums From Kentucky, Brian Chad Groce

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Only 6 autochthonous cases of human Chagas disease have been documented in the U.S.A., however, as many as 5% of immigrants from Latin America may be infected with the etiologic agent, Trypanosoma cruzi. The parasite has been isolated from a variety of wild mammals, particularly in the southeastern region of the U.S.A. The goal of our study was to determine if the sylvatic cycle of T. cruzi infection occurs in Kentucky, and, if present, to assess the prevalence of infection in Warren and Barren counties. Raccoons and opossums were live-trapped between June and December, 2007. Animals were anesthetized with …
