Maturational Changes In Myosin Light Chain Kinase Activity In Ovine Carotids, Elisha Raju Injeti Sep 2008

Maturational Changes In Myosin Light Chain Kinase Activity In Ovine Carotids, Elisha Raju Injeti

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Vascular reactivity changes dramatically during postnatal maturation due in large part to developmental changes in myofilament calcium sensitivity. Recent findings suggest that reactivity of the thick filament component of calcium sensitivity is upregulated in fetal compared to adult arteries. In light of these findings, the present study tests the hypothesis that upregulation of fetal thick filament reactivity is due to upregulation of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) activity. To test this hypothesis, MLCK abundance and its activity is measured in intact arteries. The results indicate that MLCK abundance is 6.03 ± 0.96 fold greater in adult than in fetal arteries. …

Goblets Of Fire: Potential Constitutional Impediments To The Regulation Of Global Warming, Steven Ferrey Sep 2008

Goblets Of Fire: Potential Constitutional Impediments To The Regulation Of Global Warming, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Almost half the U.S. states have begun to regulate the emission of greenhouse gases and global warming, given that the federal government has not acted. However, these leading states are implementing carbon regulatory measures that, if challenged, may be found to violate the Supremacy Clause and/or Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. If so, these state initiatives, as the lead edge of U.S. policy on global warming, will require time-consuming legal revisions that could affect fundamental allowance allocation in lieu of auction, use of government garnered revenues from state carbon restrictions, and the degree to which states can change wholesale …

Towards A Cultural Framework Of Audience Response And Television Violence, Lajos Császi Sep 2008

Towards A Cultural Framework Of Audience Response And Television Violence, Lajos Császi

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Towards a Cultural Framework of Audience Response and Television Violence" Lajos Császi argues that media violence is not a reification of social violence; rather, a popular ritual allowing contemporary societies to sublimate, to substitute, and to discuss aggression in the public sphere. Császi reviews the central questions of contemporary debates about television violence including Stuart Hall's thought on this topic and introduces the ideas of Elias, Geertz, Turner, Bettelheim, Benjamin, Girard, and others in order to locate the representation of violence in an interdisciplinary context. Using the genre of the horror film as an example, Császi suggests …

Patriarchy In Post-1989 Poland And Tokarczuk's Dom Dzienny, Dom Nocny (The Day House, The Night House), Justyna Sempruch

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Patriarchy in Post-1989 Poland and Tokarczuk's Dom Dzienny, Dom Nocny (The Day House, the Night House)" Justyna Sempruch analyzes Tokarczuk's 1998 narrative in the context of the post-communist revival of patriarchy in Poland as well as the parallel Western feminist impact on women's writing in Poland. These two distinct socio-cultural developments, as reflected in Tokarczuk's novel, expand the concept of a subversive household into a transnational dis/order that abolishes borders between domestic (national) and foreign structures: an increasing masculinization of the power structures (political arena and "scientific" practices) impacts the management of the social and the most …

Treating Black adolescent males with disruptive behavior disorders can be challenging for psychologists and other mental health professionals The negative perception of this group within society, as well as the absence of clinical training exploring issues pertinent to Black adolescent males, among other things, may hinder a professional’s ability to effectively work with this population. This doctoral project discussed the research in several areas currently pertinent to Black adolescent males, as well as factors that have historically been oppressive to Black Americans. It then describes several DSM-IV-TR diagnoses and legal classifications associated with Disruptive Behavior Disorders. In addition, research analyzing …

Loess Record Of The Pleistocene–Holocene Transition On The Northern And Central Great Plains, Usa, Joseph A. Mason, Xiaodong Miao, P.R. Hanson, William C. Johnson, Peter M. Jacobs, Ronald J. Goble Sep 2008

Loess Record Of The Pleistocene–Holocene Transition On The Northern And Central Great Plains, Usa, Joseph A. Mason, Xiaodong Miao, P.R. Hanson, William C. Johnson, Peter M. Jacobs, Ronald J. Goble

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Various lines of evidence support conflicting interpretations of the timing, abruptness, and nature of climate change in the Great Plains during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. Loess deposits and paleosols on both the central and northern Great Plains provide a valuable record that can help address these issues. A synthesis of new and previously reported optical and radiocarbon ages indicates that the Brady Soil, which marks the boundary between late Pleistocene Peoria Loess and Holocene Bignell Loess, began forming after a reduction in the rate of Peoria Loess accumulation that most likely occurred between 13.5 and 15 cal ka. Brady Soil formation …

Environmental Effects On The Expression Of Life Span And Aging: An Extreme Contrast Between Wild And Captive Cohorts Of Telostylinus Angusticollis (Diptera: Neriidae), Noriyoshi Kawasaki, Chad Brassil, Robert Brooks, Russell Bonduriansky

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Most research on life span and aging has been based on captive populations of short-lived animals; however, we know very little about the expression of these traits in wild populations of such organisms. Because life span and aging are major components of fitness, the extent to which the results of many evolutionary studies in the laboratory can be generalized to natural settings depends on the degree to which the expression of life span and aging differ in natural environments versus laboratory environments and whether such environmental effects interact with phenotypic variation. We investigated life span and aging in Telostylinus angusticollis …

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the pain level, analgesic consumption, operation time, bleeding and early complications after open and closed hemorrhoidectomy using a harmonic scalpel (HS) and classical methods. METHODS Between January 2005 and January 2006, 87 patients with grade III-IV hemorrhoids, admitted in General Surgery Clinic, Gulhane Military Medical Academy, Ankara, Turkey were enrolled in the study. They were randomized into open HS (n=22), closed HS (n=22), Miligan Morgan (n=22), and Ferguson (n=21) hemorrhoidectomy. Patients were evaluated for postoperative pain, painkiller consumption, bleeding and operation time. RESULTS Bleeding volume was significantly lower in Groups I-II (p<0.001). Operation time was significantly shorter in Group I (p<0.001). Postoperative pain and pain at the time of first defecation, was significantly lower in Groups I-III (p<0.001) compared with the other 2 groups and lower during days 2-6 in Group I compared to the Group III (p<0.004). Visual Analogue Scale results were similar in Groups II and IV. Analgesic consumption in Groups I-III was significantly lower than Groups II-IV (p<0.001). Oral analgesic consumption during 2-5 postoperative days was lower in Group I than in Group III (p<0.007) and similar in closed hemorrhoidectomy group. CONCLUSIONS The use of HS in hemorrhoidectomy reduces postoperative pain, analgesic consumption, operation time, and bleeding. Harmonic scalpel hemorrhoidectomy is an effective, comfortable, and safe procedure. Use of suture in hemorrhoidectomy is a major cause of postoperative pain.
